I dont think that would be a popular or prudent idea unless the conservative rulings of the SCOTUS gets so out of touch with the future electorate that its the only way to Constitutionally fix things

It makes some rational sense if you want to buy into the notion that traditional conservatism as a lifestyle is dying out to the point that it barely maintains power by making direct appeals to fringe groups, so it could never backfire since we might never see them with such power ever again, and what is considered conservative will keep moving left

Keep in mind in heavily urban areas like San Francisco your cost of living can vary wildly depending on how willing to commute you are and what living standards you're willing to tolerate. So one person's "I must live paycheck to paycheck woe is me" could be another person's life of luxury.
