I finished it today. It's serviceable, but I absolutely agree it just feels kinda like a worse quality Futurama. There's some good stuff in there (I think the king and Eric Andre demon are pretty consistent), but overall it doesn't quite step out from under the shadow of Simpsons and Futurama.

That said, the ending is pretty intriguing and I'll definitely watch a S2 to see if the show finds a unique voice.

Went 12-1 in the Brawliseum with Evenlock running no new cards! Pretty good for someone who hasn't played Standard seriously in at least two expansions. Seems like an ok deck.

Besides having unfavorable matchups against Druid, what's the problem with Control Warlock or Big Spell Mage?

I see where you're coming from. I agree there's certainly a range of aggressive and controlling combo strategies. But I think there's a fundamental difference in strategy. Some decks blur the lines, and yeah I think Shudderwock has changed enough that it can do a reasonable approximation of a midrange or control deck, but it's not the goal. The ideal strategy for the deck is still to draw everything on time and slam Wock on turn 9.

I guess how I think of combo decks is that they don't actually care about what the opponent does. They're forced to pretend to care about the board because that's where the things trying to kill them live, but typically aren't effecient at it because they're mainly trying to stall. Whereas a Control deck does care about the board because they want to use that later. Combo decks end up playing inefficient stall and draw cards and struggle with aggro because of it, but there's some overlap between the two archetypes when stuff is too efficient to pass up.

It feels like Blizzard is trying to force an aggro > combo > control > aggro meta. Those are technically healthy for the game but it will never feel good to run into your unfavored matchup, especially with so little counterplay in Standard right now.

I tried playing the Topsy Turvy deck earlier and it took me 5 games to assemble and execute the combo (and also not die in one of them). It's super unintuitive until you get practice with it and it clicks. Cool deck though!

Also it's cool to see people's different takes on Sanderson. I think he has a lot of variety despite his books having the same basis, so there's a lot of different things to like. For instance you call out Twinborn as not being as cool as Mistborn, but for me I found them to be a much more interesting take on that magic system! Not that I don't like epic metal wizard duels, but after reading Stormlight and Mistborn Era 1 which were really high magic, the power reduction (and sweet power combos) felt very fresh.

IIRC Firebat really likes Flark, and he's a big Hunter player (kinda zoned out during that Omnistone). I think his main point was that the bombs essentially give the next Magnetic minion you play Charge. I don't know if that makes it worth it to just play Goblin Bomb itself, but everything else seems potentially powerful. Slapping a Spider Bomb, Venomizer, or even Zilliax on residual bombs seems good.

So from that perspective, Flark says "give the next 4 mechs you play Charge" and if they try to deal with the bombs or the rest of the board, they take 8 face damage.

The Imperial Fool was the easiest Hoid identification of my life

Fun fact, he was supposed to explicity make an appearance in the intro chapter and talk to Shai while basically setting up the whole plot. You can read the deleted version on Sanderson's site. It's really bad, so it's a good thing he listens to his editor!

Oh, hey, I just finished Bands of Mourning last night. I just have the short stories in the Cosmere Collection left to go. I ended up having to get it even though I already got the standalone Edgedancer. When I started reading Stormlight, I was determined not to get into Sanderson's weird multiverse bullshit and just stick with the one series. Then Oathbringer came out and here I am.

I agree that it's really interesting to be able to see his progression as a writer. I liked Mistborn Era 1, but it was pretty rough at times (especially Book 2). Stormlight, Wax & Wayne, and The Emperor's Soul are just on a completely different level.

Is any of his non-Cosmere stuff worth checking out? Besides Wheel of Time, I tried reading that back in high school and just could not get into it.

All I remember from S5 is that Jonathan Banks was a great guest star and the Floor is Lava episode.

Oh and Pierce dying off-screen and giving everyone semen which honestly might be the weirdest thing in the show for multiple reasons.

S4 actually does have one legit great episode that was written by Jim Rash aka The Dean (Basic Human Anatomy). It always gets glossed over because the rest of the season is such a trainwreck. If you do skip, do not skip that one.

I'd say watch S4 just for the context it provides to the later seasons (also it's not that long since it's a half-season), but I absolutely would not blame you for skipping it.

S3 is the peak of the show. They go really hard in on the meta, concept, and parody that's more sprinkled throughout S1 and S2. There's a lot of weird shit done just because they can. I can see that being a major turn off for people, but I think it's fantastic.

There's definitely a drop-off afterwards. The show becomes about trying to be the same kind of weird afterwards, but it can't capture what S3 did. S4 is bad due to no Harmon, plus the cast starts dropping out as well. By S6 there's only 4 of the original 7 main cast members left. Even though 5 and 6 are good, it's not the same.

Pierce's character in S2 is bad but it's good for the show. They do some great stuff with it. Once you accept him becoming the show's villain, it's great.

Just make sure to immediately forget how bad he was when S3 starts.
