Cohen has re-registered as a Democrat and urged people on Twitter to vote in the midterm elections, calling it possibly the most important vote in our lifetime. He said that events also activated within him an urge to reveal details from his tenure at the Trump Organization, during which he said the president privately uttered chilling, racist language in one-on-one conversations. On Tuesday, the day of the first funerals in Pittsburgh, he shared some of these memories.

Certainly, Cohen is aggrieved, and his credibility has been questioned by the president, his lawyers, and others. His allegations could inflame the very divisions that hes said he wants to diffuse. Through the presidents public attacks against him, he stayed silent, as his lawyers advised, and hes taken a risk in sharing these recollections on the record. When I asked him why he was coming forward now with such uncomfortable claims, Cohen was clear: he knew that the presidents private comments were worse than his public rhetoric, and he wanted to offer potential voters what he believed was evidence of Trumps character in advance of the midterm elections.

During our conversation, Cohen recalled a discussion at Trump Tower, following the then-candidates return from a campaign rally during the 2016 election cycle. Cohen had watched the rally on TV and noticed that the crowd was largely caucasian. He offered this observation to his boss. I told Trump that the rally looked vanilla on television. Trump responded, Thats because black people are too stupid to vote for me. (The White House did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)

This conversation, he noted, was reminiscent of an exchange that the two men had engaged in years earlier, after Nelson Mandelas death. [Trump] said to me, Name one country run by a black person thats not a shithole, and then he added, Name one city, Cohen recalled, a statement that echoed the presidents alleged comments about African nations earlier this year. (White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied those comments at the time. She added that no one here is going to pretend like the president is always politically correcthe isnt. She subsequently noted that it was one of the reasons the American people love him.)

Cohen also recounted a conversation he had with Trump in the late 2000s, while they were traveling to Chicago for a Trump International Hotel board meeting. We were going from the airport to the hotel, and we drove through what looked like a rougher neighborhood. Trump made a comment to me, saying that only the blacks could live like this. After the first few seasons of The Apprentice, Cohen recalled how he and Trump were discussing the reality show and past-season winners. The conversation wended its way back to the shows first season, which ended in a head-to-head between two contestants, Bill Rancic and Kwame Jackson. Trump was explaining his back-and-forth about not picking Jackson, an African-American investment manager who had graduated from Harvard Business School. He said, Theres no way I can let this black [anti-gay slur] win.
...
In retrospect, Cohen told me that he wishes he had quit the Trump Organization when he heard these offensive remarks. I should have been a bigger person, and I should have left, he said. He didnt, he said, because he grew numb to the language and, in awe of the job, forgave his bosss sins. Cohen, in fact, even defended the president publicly against charges of racism. Last year, he explicitly tweeted as much. Cohen explained that he defended the president because he thought the magnitude of the office would eventually force him to be more judicious with his words. I truly thought the office would change him, he said. But it hasnt, Cohen continued. In fact, he said, it has exacerbated his rhetoric.

https://theintercept.com/2018/11/02/facebook-ads-white-supremacy-pittsburgh-shooting/

APPARENTLY FUELED BY anti-Semitism and the bogus narrative that outside forces are scheming to exterminate the white race, Robert Bowers murdered 11 Jewish congregants as they gathered inside their Pittsburgh synagogue, federal prosecutors allege. But despite long-running international efforts to debunk the idea of a white genocide, Facebook was still selling advertisers the ability to market to those with an interest in that myth just days after the bloodshed.

Earlier this week, The Intercept was able to select white genocide conspiracy theory as a pre-defined detailed targeting criterion on the social network to promote two articles to an interest group that Facebook pegged at 168,000 users large and defined as people who have expressed an interest or like pages related to White genocide conspiracy theory. The paid promotion was approved by Facebooks advertising wing. After we contacted the company for comment, Facebook promptly deleted the targeting category, apologized, and said it should have never existed in the first place.

Our reporting technique was the same as one used by the investigative news outlet ProPublica to report, just over one year ago, that in addition to soccer dads and Arianna Grande fans, the worlds largest social network enabled advertisers to direct their pitches to the news feeds of almost 2,300 people who expressed interest in the topics of Jew hater, How to burn jews, or, History of why jews ruin the world. The report exposed how little Facebook was doing to vet marketers, who pay the company to leverage personal information and inclinations in order to gain users attention and who provide the foundation for its entire business model. At the time, ProPublica noted that Facebook said it would explore ways to fix the problem, such as limiting the number of categories available or scrutinizing them before they are displayed to buyers. Rob Leathern, a Facebook product manager, assured the public, We know we have more work to do, so were also building new guardrails in our product and review processes to prevent other issues like this from happening in the future.

Leatherns new guardrails dont seem to have prevented Facebook from manually approving our ad buy the same day it was submitted, despite its explicit labeling as White Supremacy Test.

From the outside, its impossible to tell exactly how Facebook decides who among its 2 billion users might fit into the white genocide interest group or any other cohort available for detailed targeting. The companys own documentation is very light on details, saying only that these groups are based on indicators like Pages [users] engage with or Activities people engage in on and off Facebook related to things like their device usage, purchase behaviors or intents and travel preferences. It remains entirely possible that some people lumped into the white genocide conspiracy theory fandom are not, in fact, true believers, but may have interacted with content critical of this myth, such as a news report, a fact check, or academic research on the topic.

But there are some clues as to who exactly is counted among the 168,000. After selecting white genocide conspiracy theory as an ad target, Facebook provided suggestions of other, similar criteria, including interest in the far-right-wing news outlets RedState and the Daily Caller the latter of which, co-founded by right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson, has repeatedly been criticized for cozy connections to white nationalists and those sympathetic to them.

https://www.mediamatters.org/blog/2018/11/02/study-over-past-3-months-guest-panels-sunday-shows-have-been-overwhelmingly-conservative/221974

By a wide margin, the show with the most imbalanced panels overall was NBCs Meet the Press, where 85 percent of all panels tilted right. In total, 11 of the shows 13 panels leaned conservative, while none of the panels leaned left. Two panels were ideologically balanced.

Panels on Fox News Sunday were the second most conservative leaning, with 62 percent tilting right. In total, eight panels were right-leaning, while just two panels were left-leaning. Three panels were ideologically balanced.

On CBS Face the Nation, conservative panels outnumbered left-leaning panels by a ratio of 2-to-1. Six panels tilted right, three panels tilted left, and four panels were ideologically neutral.

On ABCs This Week, 40 percent of panels were right-leaning while there wasnt a single left-leaning panel. Overall, six panels tilted right, no panel tilted left, and nine panels were ideologically balanced.

On CNNs State of the Union, 79 percent of panels were ideologically balanced. Two panels tilted right, one panel titled left, and 11 panels were ideologically balanced.

In total, across all five shows, 33 panels tilted right while just six panels tilted left. Twenty-nine panels were ideologically balanced.

Previous Media Matters studies show that Sunday shows have favored conservative guests for years, regardless of whether a Republican or a Democrat was in the White House.

Methodology
We reviewed every edition of ABC's This Week, CBS' Face the Nation, NBC's Meet the Press, Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday, and CNN's State of the Union from August 5 through October 28. We coded guest appearances for all five programs for political ideology, labeling the guests as Democratic/progressive, Republican/conservative, or neutral. We classified guests based on either their own ideological self-identification or their public affiliation with an openly partisan or ideological organization or institution. The neutral category does not necessarily imply strict ideological neutrality but, rather, might be better understood as neutral/centrist/nonpartisan -- we use the term "neutral" for the sake of brevity.

We coded panels as tilting left when a majority of participants were Democratic or progressive; we coded panels as tilting right when a majority of participants were Republican or conservative; and we coded panels as balanced when Democratic and progressive guests numbered equally with Republican and conservative guests. Neutral guests did not affect a panel's tilt. A panel was defined as a group of multiple guests appearing on a show simultaneously, with the exception of 1) debates between political figures, 2) joint interviews, which we defined as a newsmaker interview with two or more guests where the guests have a tangible connection or are being interviewed with the express purpose of sharing similar viewpoints, and 3) focus groups with voters.

http://jewishinsider.com/14738/cory-booker-to-support-israel-anti-boycott-act/

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) tells Jewish Insider that he now supports The Israel Anti-Boycott Act: Weve seen the alarming rise in anti-Semitism in the United States and across the world in recent years manifest itself in many deeply concerning ways, including in the actions of foreign governments targeting Israel and the Israeli people.

I have long and staunchly opposed the BDS movement, and support this bill which will prevent international entities from imposing their will on US businesses with regards to their decisions, consistent with US law, to conduct commerce with our close ally Israel and its citizens. Initial concerns that this bill unintentionally infringed on individuals First Amendment rights have now been addressed by changes agreed upon earlier this year, and I feel confident that those modifications safeguard Americans constitutional right to free speech. Ill be adding myself as a cosponsor, and will be urging my colleagues to support this important legislation in its modified form.

BACKGROUND: The Israel Anti-Boycott Act, first proposed in the Senate in March of 2017, was originally a response to a UN Human Rights Council resolution urging boycotts of companies doing business in Israeli settlements. Its goal is two-fold: to protect American companies and institutions from being forced to participate in international anti-Israel boycotts, and to prohibit U.S. businesses from engaging in boycotts. If passed, the bill would echo on the federal level anti-BDS legislation already passed by a number of individual states.

The first draft of the Act was met with opposition some over concerns that the bill infringed on First Amendment rights. The ACLU condemned it as unconstitutional, arguing that the bill would punish individuals for their political beliefs by making them subject to serious financial penalties or jail time.

WHATS CHANGED: Co-sponsors Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Rob Portman (R-OH) worked with legal experts and lawmakers to amend the bill, introducing an updated version this past March. The revised Act acknowledges the rights of individuals to engage in personal boycotts, makes clear that Americans cannot be imprisoned for boycotting Israel, and states that speech critical of Israel cannot be used as evidence proving a legal violation. However, the ACLU still opposes the updated text.

WHY IT MATTERS: At present, while 44 Senate Republicans support the measure, a mere 14 Democrats have backed the bill. Among those Democratic Senators rumored to be considering a 2020 presidential run including Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris Booker is so far the only one to support the updated Act.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/11/02/trumps-new-immigration-ad-was-panned-racist-turns-out-it-was-also-based-falsehood/
The 53-second video focuses on the courtroom behavior of Luis Bracamontes, an undocumented immigrant who was convicted of killing two sheriffs deputies in California in 2014 and bragged about it during the trial.

Democrats let him into our country, the ads script reads. Democrats let him stay.

Just one problem: It doesnt appear to be true.

Bracamontes, who had been deported multiple times before his crime spree, last entered the country while George W. Bush was president, sometime between May 2001 and February 2002, when there is a record for his marriage in Arizona, according to the Sacramento Bee.

He lived near Salt Lake City until 2014, when a methamphetamine-fueled road trip ended with the murder of the two Sacramento-area deputies, according to the Bee.

The ad also failed to mention that in 1998 he was arrested on drug charges in Phoenix, then released by the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for reasons unknown, the Bee reported.

Arpaio, a close Trump ally who has made waves for his hard-line immigration policies and rhetoric, was convicted in 2017 for ignoring a federal judges order to stop detaining people on the suspicion of being undocumented immigrants. He was later pardoned by Trump.

The Maricopa County Sheriffs Office did not respond to a request for comment.

Bracamontes had been deported under both Democratic and Republican presidencies.

He was first arrested on charges related to marijuana possession in Phoenix in 1996 and sentenced to four months in jail, the Bee reported. He served his time and was deported in 1997, when Bill Clinton was president, only to be deported again in 2001 soon after being arrested on marijuana charges, according to the Bee.

Bracamontes has been sentenced to the death penalty in the murder case.

Thumbing through his Facebook feed, Ari Kohen came across the now widely shared photo of a defaced campaign sign for Rep. Jeff Fortenberry.

Shared on the social media platform by Seeing Red Nebraska, a progressive political blog, the photo depicts Fortenberry with a pair of oversized googly eyes, while a strip of tape turned the incumbent Republican's name into a sophomoric joke. [Antifar's note: Jeff Fartenberry. The "sophomoric joke" was "Jeff Fartenberry."]

Kohen, an associate professor of political science at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, clicked like on his cellphone screen.

I know this is not high comedy, said Kohen, who originally thought the photo was a Photoshop prank. It was Sunday, I was bored and got a laugh out of it. I clicked like because I found it amusing.

But leaving a like on the photo was anything but amusing, according to the man whose face was on the sign.

While Lincoln Police began investigating, a Fortenberry campaign staffer in Lincoln sent a screenshot showing Kohens like to the congressman's Washington, D.C., office, and the next day, Dr. William Reyn Archer III, his chief of staff, called Kohen to talk about it.

Its against the law and uses the resources of the city, and (Kohen) thinks its OK to like it, Archer said in a phone interview.

When Archer didnt hear back from Kohen immediately, he emailed the chair of the UNL political science department, copying the interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Chancellor Ronnie Green on the message.

As Chairman of the Department of Political Science at the University of Nebraska, I would like to find a time to speak to you about the support one of your faculty has shown for political vandalism, Archer wrote to Kevin Smith, Kohens department chair, on Oct. 24, according to an email provided to the Journal Star through a public-records request.

The question is what the position of the department and university is regarding vandalism or worse violence, which we have seen in this political season, he continued, concluding with a request to speak by phone.

Through a spokeswoman, UNL declined to comment on the exchange.

Kohen returned Archers call late last week, and the two spoke for nearly an hour, with the professor explaining that a like was not supporting vandalism and the chief of staff asserting that it was.

It wasnt clear at all what he wanted from me, if he wanted me to unlike it or retract it, Kohen said. He told me they could put this out publicly that I liked vandalism, and essentially, that that would be bad for me.

Kohen said he took that as a threat, explaining hes witnessed other UNL faculty receive death threats for becoming embroiled in minor political disputes on campus that spread across conservative media circles.

After a week in which explosive devices were sent to Democratic politicians and media outlets, and in which 11 people attending services at a Pittsburgh synagogue were killed in an anti-Semitic attack, Kohen, who is Jewish, said he couldn't sit idle.

He filed a complaint against Archer with the House Ethics Committee on Monday, providing a recording of the conversation with his documentation.

"To have people in this position who are ready and willing to abuse their authority like this, to bully people and push people around and threaten to call down retribution over something that maybe hurt somebody's feelings," he said, "we're all poorer if that's what's happening in this country.

Archer denies threatening Kohen, saying the two had an amicable conversation that ended with Kohen inviting Fortenberry to speak to his UNL class, even though he said the two did not reach an agreement: He saw it as humorous; we saw it as a slippery slope to liking vandalism.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2018/10/north-dakota-native-americans-votes-stolen.html
On Oct. 14, Dion Jackson mailed in an absentee ballot application for the upcoming election. Jackson, an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Tribe who lives on the Spirit Lake Reservation in North Dakota, is an American who is qualified to vote. But on Oct. 22, he received a letter explaining that his application had been rejected. The street address that Jackson had listedthe one that appears on his state-issued IDwas invalid, the letter explained. If he did not take further action, he would not be allowed to vote in the midterm election.

There is no street sign identifying Jacksons street. There is no number on his house. A state database identifies his street as Unknown2. Jackson would not be permitted to vote because, according to the state, he has no real address.

Jacksons struggle is currently playing out across North Dakota. A stringent new law that requires all voters to prove their residential street address has placed an immense burden on Native Americans in the state. Many live on rural reservations in houses with no residential address, rendering them incapable of casting a ballot. Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to block a lower court decision upholding this rule, over a pointed dissent by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Now Native American voters are back in court, asking a federal judge to grant them relief. This time, they arent just arguing that the law makes voting more onerous. Theyve demonstrated that the law may make it impossible for them to vote at all.
...
For decades, North Dakotans could vote with a valid residential or mailing address, which allowed rural tribal voters to use their P.O. Box as identification. After Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp triumphed in 2012 by fewer than 3,000 votes, Republicans altered the law. Heitkamp won with strong support from Native Americans, so the GOP passed legislation that targeted their access to the franchise. The new law compels voters to present an ID at the polls that lists their current residential (not mailing) addressor, if voting by absentee ballot, provide one that corresponds to a state database.

U.S. District Judge Daniel L. Hovland blocked that requirement in April, citing its discriminatory and burdensome impact on Native Americans. He noted that if the law takes full effect in November, it will prevent about 5,000 Native American voters from casting a ballot. Yet the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Hovland by a 21 vote in September, allowing the state to enforce its residential street address rule for most voters. At the end of its opinion, however, the majority signaled that it was open to more limited relief: If any resident of North Dakota lacks a current residential street address and is denied an opportunity to vote on that basis, it wrote, the courthouse doors remain open.

The plaintiffs in this latest lawsuit take the majority at its word. Using maps, photographs, and GPS, they explain the bind that North Dakota has placed them in. There are no street signs to identify the roads on which their houses are located. In some instances, the state has given them conflicting information about their residential address. Consider these quandaries:

Leslie and Clark Peltier are enrolled members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians who live on reservation trust land. Their rural home has no address. During the 2012 election, a county representative assigned them the address 10296 40th Ave. NE, with no town or ZIP code. When they obtained drivers licenses, the state identified their town as Belcourt, North Dakota, 58316. But the secretary of states database lists their town as St. John, North Dakota, 58369. They cannot vote unless they resolve this discrepancyyet they have no apparent way of doing so.

https://taskandpurpose.com/todd-lawson-latourrette-cut-off-arm/

Actor Todd Lawson LaTourrette whose credits include brief roles on TV shows Better Call Saul and Longmire plus a bit part in The Men Who Stare At Goats publicly outed himself as faking military service to get his big break during an Oct. 29 interview with KOB4 news.

But the story gets more bizarre, because of the lengths he went to do it: LaTourrette said that 17 years ago, he cut off his own arm, cauterized the wound, then made his own prosthetic, all so he could pass himself off as a war-wounded veteran.

Heres how he explained it to KOB4:

I severed my hand with a skill saw, Latourette, who said he is bipolar and was off his medication at the time, told the local Albuquerque, New Mexico outlet. The state of my mind was a psychotic episode.

Following the DIY operation, Latourette began landing a number of television roles, including his recent part in Season 4 of Better Call Saul in September, after claiming he was wounded overseas.

The film industry obviously took a different angle, Latourette said in the interview. That I was different. And so they liked that.

But Latourette said the lie has been hard to live with, and hinted that its because he stole the limelight by claiming to be a veteran, when he wasnt. So he decided to come forward to make amends.

I was dishonorable. Im killing my career by doing this, if anyone thinks this was for personal edification, thats not the case, Latourette said. Im ousting myself from the New Mexico Film Industry. And gladly so, just to say what Ive said.

The actor told KOB4 that hes not seeking forgiveness, just a chance to close this chapter in his life, and hopes his, uh, experience, may help others dealing with mental health challenges.

If nothing else, its a cautionary tale that there are limits to what you should do to land your big break in a cut-throat industry like cutting off a limb to score a role that may have gone to a wounded military veteran looking for his or her big break.
