2010 was the year I bought my PS3, and 2012 my PS Vita. I think it was a great era for JRPG fans.

This is true for me, too. PS3 in 2010, Vita for my wife in 2012, Vita for myself in 2014. Plus: I got the 3DS at launch in 2011, and the 3DS library is a big plus.

It's funny because the early 2010s are awful of JRPGs. Too much focus on targeting the "weeb" audience.

I am going to argue that this sentiment, for gamers like me who have JRPGs as a favorite genre, is the worst thing about gaming in the listed time frame.

They amusingly had no copies of Ultra Sun.

For each new pair of Pokmon games, one is always harder to find than the other, usually the 'cooler' color (e.g. Blue as opposed to Red). Funny to see the reverse.

The missus and I always split the games up along these lines. She gets the warm colors, I get the cool colors. Managed to coordinate it that way since Diamond and Pearl.

I think the secret to enjoying Fairy Tail is to just ignore Natsu most of the time and pay attention to the arcs of the female characters instead.

Fairy Tail is one of those cases where I prefer (and recommend) the manga over the anime, though I admit a lot of that is because I dislike A-1 Pictures.

The only reason I am leaving my home at all on Black Friday is because I have to work. :-P Not going to buy anything. Did too many years in retail to feel anything but jaded about the entire holiday season.

As for Call of Duty, it benefits from a nigh-infinite supply of casual dudebro gamers in the U.S. It is indeed Madden, but with guns.

I have the PS3 version of the original Valkyria Chronicles, but I picked that up on the cheap after already having VC2 (digital version for PSP) for years. Have not tried either VC Revolution or VC4, so my involvement with the series is minimal. Might upgrade to the PS4 version of VC4 as time and money allow.

The research I have done supports these methods. I have to ask specific questions -- and provide specific details -- about the area, and I have the right to say that stealth is not possible in certain settings (... plus the right to say that there are no called shots in 5th Edition, since the same player keeps trying to blind enemies, disable breath weapons by attacking the throat, etc.).

Increasing the number of enemies is also important, but I need to do that for the rest of the party, too. A party of half a dozen Level 7 adventurers should not be able to take down a CR 14 adult black dragon in a single round, and the reason this happened is because of their gear. I underestimated how magic weapons can boost the strength of the party in this edition, and I am still adjusting the encounter balance to compensate for that (e.g. maximum HP for all enemies instead of average HP, varying enemy types to include archers and rogues, etc.).

True Sight is a high-level ability that I need to be mindful about using. Will be handy in the current set of circumstances (because the rogue has picked a fight involving high-level NPCs), though.

That's assuming you mean in combat though.

Yes. Stealth has been a non-issue outside of combat, save for it being used to set up a surprise condition for combat to come.

All right, reached the end of D&D for the year, and I am plotting Season 2. (Can I call that? It feels like it should be a Season 2.) My biggest dilemma is finding ways to challenge the (... overpowered) rogue without seeming unfair. That is going to take a little research. I especially need to look up how other DMs have handled abuse of the Stealth skill.

I never expected to get the original Box, but the fact that it had a hard drive -- and, by extension, had no need of a proprietary memory card -- sold me back in '02. The first Box still has the best selection of games to suit my tastes, IMO, though the 360 was a good follow-up ... until I got the Red Ring of Death. Replaced the 360, but that left a bad taste in my mouth. And the complete lack of games that I want to play -- mostly JRPGs; I am a creature of habit -- that I cannot play on my PS4 doomed the Bone for me from the start.

Games by Enix apart from Dragon Quest and Star Ocean. Hmm. Still have my SNES cartridge of Brain Lord around here. ... Enix never did a good job of marketing their games, if you ask me. They had a big boost from Nintendo Power in spreading the word about the original Dragon Warrior, but they did next to nothing for the sequels.

I made the mistake of visiting the comic book-related sub-forum here at Game FAQs and reading a long topic about the new She-Ra. I am ... not going to watch it. I sense I am not the target audience, and the discussion (read: argument) suggests that it is going to be another Voltron: Legendary Defender in terms of how toxic the fandom is. ... Gives me a good excuse to go back and rewatch the '03 He-Man reboot, though. That one holds up, IMO.

That might not be the best example, IMO. Squaresoft was facing bankruptcy, and Enix was not. ... There is more to it than that, but Square Enix is one of those things that I cannot discuss without becoming irrational and unhelpful (... because I cannot stand Tetsuya Nomura and what the Square half of the company has become during his tenure).

It is telling that the Enix side remains more or less unchanged, setting aside the absolute creative failure that Star Ocean has become. Dragon Quest XI is certainly a very pretty game, but the core mechanics are pretty much the same that we have been seeing from the series for the past thirty years (not a bad thing, if you ask me).

It's also commonly known as the "Gazetteer" setting, because the Gazetteers that came out in the 80s that described the various lands were kind of famous in and of themselves (and you see quite a few ads for them in comic books from that era).

It helps that Drive Thru RPG also has those Gazetteers. The PDFs are cheap, and they have made for interesting reading, since the Rules Cyclopedia (otherwise a god-tier rulebook, IMO) can only say so much in the space available.

I know those names. I think I *might* have purchased some of the material on clearance from a KB (or Borders?) back in the day or something.

This is entirely possible, though Mystara / Hollow World might be more familiar to you as the "Known World" of basic (i.e. red box) D&D from back in the day. (I also recall getting a fair amount of my basic D&D stuff from Kay-Bee, so that seems likely.)

Good to have Wave Master back in circulation. I mentioned Smackdown VS. RAW because, though I have never been the biggest wrestling fan (give or take a Fire Pro game, because those are the shit), my friends and I have always enjoyed messing with the Create-A-Wrestler modes. Been a big thing for us since the N64 days (e.g. No Mercy and Revenge).

(Also: Is that GIF Andy Serkis, Zeus? I keep seeing it around the forum.)

In terms of geek stuff today, I have the day off for a doctor visit (stupid ear infection), so I have been scrounging up ways to challenge my players, since we are wrapping up the campaign next week ... or so I thought. I asked them what they would like to do, and they all voted for continuing to play with the same characters (D&D 5E, and they are all Level 7; it was a relatively low-powered campaign).

In some ways, that's a pity, since I was kind of hoping to run Mystara (and I have the Hollow World reprint in the mail), but I don't mind continuing to run Greyhawk. I'll just have to be more clever with the challenges, especially in terms of one player I've mentioned before whose rogue build makes his character pretty much untouchable. ... Well, I've also got Volo's and Xanathar's coming (good deal on Amazon), so he's in for a bit of a rough ride.

We're breaking for the holiday season after next week, so I've got until 2019 to make things interesting, but we'll see how that goes. I'm glad everybody's having fun, but I don't want it to be too much of a walkover.

Bit of a slow season for anime, I think. I've got Goblin Slayer, and I'll admit to watching the car crashes that are Conception and Senran Kagura (... games are so much better), but that's about it. Hearing a lot about Gridman, though. Like, seriously, that's the sleeper hit of the lot.

Final Fantasy V is one of my favorites. It has one of the best versions of the Job System (next to Tactics), and the game play is solid. The improvements made in the GBA release, plus a great localization, only made it better. Highly recommended. ... But, true, it is nothing like Final Fantasy XV.
