You had Captain America, Hitler saying "So much for the tolerant Left!" and so on. It was effective because everyone hates Nazis, and Richard Spencer is certainly some form of racial extremist. Being justified in punching bad people is empowering in a very literal sense. On the other hand it led to a counter-meme, "Democrats think all who oppose them are Nazis."
