Green Lantern is actually really cool, and the movie would have been fine if they'd actually finished it and not cut stuff out.

I can't believe how bad Justice League was. It was stupid to make it in the first place without giving all of the characters their own films like Marvel did, but even ignoring that, it was terrible. Ben Affleck's Batman isn't the right type of character to lead Justice League, Aquaman was just sort of there, the villain was some C-list bad guy I actually had to look up, Cyborg came out of left field yet Batman and Wonder Woman act like we should know who he is, and the plot was all over the place despite being so simple.

I appreciate the reassurance. I have nothing against immigration in general, but making criticism of anything illegal--especially when it is a basic political issue--is crazy. Does anyone have a non-Youtube source for this? I can't find any mention of it on any major news sites.

Hopefully this is just one of those crazy things that people sometimes propose at the UN. >.>

If this is real, just stop paying for her rent. She and her boyfriend can figure that stuff out. In the future, don't do anything like this again. TopicWhat was your worst class in college?
darkmaian23
11/27/18 3:05:41 PM

The worst class I've taken to date has to be macroeconomics. It was a distance learning class, and everything that could go wrong went wrong. The textbook was very nearly unintelligible, the professor's "notes" came directly from the publisher, and I'm 99% certain the tests did too. I wrote down the concepts the textbook covered, researched and understood them, and it still didn't help me answer any of the questions. There was a guided reading function for the e-book where it would quiz you. The answers to the quizzes(and indeed many of the questions) did not follow from the reading and made nonsensical leaps in logic.

When I posted questions in the discussion forum, the professor's only answer was that the answers were somewhere in my textbook and that I should read it. When I got to speak to the guy on the phone, he was extremely unpleasant and provided deeply vague answers to my specific questions that cleared nothing up.

I've taken math, physics, and computer science courses and gotten excellent grades. That macroeconomics class made me feel like I'd had a stroke and lost the ability to comprehend the written word.

Posters in this thread have repeatedly brought up the idea that people aren't entitled to anything, and that if they want more, they need to earn it by increasing their skills and education. This line of thinking is very flawed. A significant number of people are born with subpar intelligence and aren't suited to high-tech or knowledge work. What can those people do? Taking up a trade is the obvious answer, but the world only needs so many plumbers, carpenters, and electricians. Working in the trades is physically demanding, which locks out people with health conditions or who are older, especially if they are trying to transition to a new career. It's the same with knowledge workers: not everyone is cut out to be a programmer, an engineer, or a doctor. If you are, there are only so many positions available, and you are forced to compete with foreign workers who will work for much less than is humanly possible if you live in the West.

But let's assume there were no shortages of positions, and no mitigating factors like low intelligence, old age, or poor health. No matter how clever you are, no matter how hard you work, only so many people in the world can be genuinely wealthy. It's just basic math. There is also a continuing trend towards making the wealthy wealthier. People like to trot out rags to riches success stories as though they prove anybody can do it---that just isn't so, and it's often not the person's fault either. There is a hard cap on how many people can succeed, and the gap between the wealthy and the poor is ever increasing. People aren't owed mansions, but neither should we live in a world where circumstances condemn people with no opportunities to live a wretched, joyless life while those slightly better off jeer at them and tell them to earn their keep, as though living a middle class life from paycheck to paycheck is in the pinnacle of existence that gives you some kind of moral authority.

Automation is going to have a huge impact on the number of available jobs. People claim it won't be so, citing how the economy has changed before in the past and everything was fine. What new kinds of jobs will be opened up in the future? There already aren't enough jobs that pay a living wage, and the entire goal of automation--both mechanical and digital--is to reduce the amount of labor required to perform a task, and it is doing that job very well with no end in sight.

I know other people have already said it, but I'll say it again: What the hell is BoJack doing in the number one spot? Unless you restrict the Simpsons to its golden age--say between seasons 3 and 10--it doesn't deserve to be nearly that high. These days there are maybe two or three mediocre episodes per season and the rest leave you wondering what's wrong with the writers.
TopicDo you think video games were more fun in the past?
darkmaian23
11/21/18 2:19:54 AM

I think it's a question of creativity. Big name companies churn out games that look shiny but feel completely stale and have no staying power. The proliferation of technology and the advancement of tools has allowed the indie scene to explode, but few indie titles rise out of the pit of Unity asset flip hell to be something truly great. Add to that the fact that the most dominate form of gaming is now mobile gaming--complete with similar designs and the endless lure of additional in-game purchases--and the situation is pretty dire.

Games cost too much for companies to experiment. Back in the days of the PS1 and PS2, the lower cost of development allowed for the existence of all kinds of niche and creative games. Gaming wasn't quite mainstream then either so there wasn't really a lowest common denominator to pander to. There is a kind of charm to older games that most (but not all) modern games are missing.

TopicWhat do you miss about the 90s?
darkmaian23
11/16/18 12:07:08 AM
#111
If I could travel back in time and be an adult in any era, I think the 90s are what I would choose.
- The economy was better for unskilled and skilled laborers alike.
- No great recession
- Social media didn't exist yet, or if it did, was too insignificant to matter.
- The 9/11 hadn't happened yet so no war on terror with all its "benefits".
- Gaming with your friends in person was still a thing.
- Computers and the internet were available, but weren't yet an overbearing part of life.
- Everybody was more relaxed.
- A minor point, but fast food was absolutely delicious.

I'm not saying I'd want to relive my youth, I'm saying I honestly think that 90s were better than what we have now. I can't shake the feeling the world is going to go off the rails. You can laugh all you like, but I think 90s might have been the peak of American society.
