A lot of RPGs with turn very robust turn-based combat (ex. Etrian Odyssey) will get criticized for being grindfests by people who aren't able (or simply unwilling) to implement strategy. As opposed to more shallow turn based systems (ex. Dragon Quest VIII) where the strategy cap is very low, and stats are more important than tackling the fight in a different way.
