but i guess this brings up a cautionary point. SMS verification sucks. at least with things like Google Authenticator or Authy, you can save back up codes so you can put it on other phones you might still have, or use them as verification itself.

and for a while, it was really easy for con-artists to trick customer service reps to switch your phone number over to their phone and use the SMS to get into whatever account.

thats why i hate SMS verification. Authy all the way baby!

And those tests come with big old warnings like "these are estimations, huge margin of error so at best we're able to accurately estimate the difference between east and west Asian origins but that's about it". Plus you paid money to give away your DNA info to literally anyone who pays the company, so it doesn't really reflect well on you that you'd fall for the scam.

I really wish that the education system would include personal finance as a component.

i remember in high school, my religion teacher of all people would just ignore his syllabus and teach us real life shit. one of them was on credit. he told us to open a store card and keep it open but never touch it. then open a real credit card to help build credit.

he even warned us against "fee harvester" credit card companies like CreditOne (not to be confused for CapitalOne) cuz they fuck you royally with all their fees.

weird thing happened. for a while i started taking these vitamin supplements related to stress. they didn't really do anything but i liked the idea of taking them so i kept taking them.

but then i started SMELLING. like i STANK. holy shit wtf.

it got so bad that i had to wear clothes when i slept cuz when i woke up, my BO would be all over the sheets and blanket and it stuck there. my gf would complain that my side of the bed smelled so bad she wanted to throw up.so if i wore clothes, it would catch it and i would just wash the clothes normally.

so one day i ran out of the vitamins and... i stopped smelling bad. the smell was gone.
i never put two and two together. i just assumed that as people grow older, you smell differently.

anyway now im free to sleep naked again, just as god intended.

I don't understand the obsession with credit scores.

I got credit at 19 and was diligent about paying this back. I had great credit by 25 when I applied for my first mortgage, and it has remained good, as I've received the best rates on any subsequent mortgages or loans.

There was no strategy to it. Just "pay it off soon and don't miss a payment"

but for me i fucked up my credit at an early age. i let student loans go over due and i was sitting in the high 500s for a while. but i was a young kid who didn't understand credit and was like lol who needs credit whatever.

then i tried to rent an apartment and they said they need a credit check. oof.

if i want a new cell phone, they check credit for financing. if i sign up for a new utility they check credit. some JOBS fucking check credit scores for no reason now.

i see credit as a tool. if you want to use it, you gotta keep it good. i want to use mine, so i keep it padded with tons of accounts that will keep utilization low and age of accounts solid and not prone to fluctuation by adding a new account.

banks also like seeing many well handled accounts, and will give out their more premium accounts. loving my American Express Platinum card membership right now.

point is, with credit, YOU DON'T USE IT, YOU LOSE IT.

btw my credit score is 704 right now. its usually 730ish but i let some balances report and it fucked up my individual card utilization

At one point I had 5 and I found it completely silly. I still have 4 technically but I only use one visa and one Mastercard.

to help my credit score (most are no AF cards). also to earn points so i can travel or get cash back.

it merely stops it from aging on your account. its not bad, but it wont help either.

you could say itll be bad in 7 years when the 1 year old account drops off your report entirely, dropping your overall average age of accounts. but its only 1 year old and we both have 10+ credit cards on our accounts so its not gonna affect it much at all.

the card came with a 50k membership rewards points bonus, which i transferred to Airfrance, along with 30k of my chase points, to book 2 tickets home for our big korea trip earlier this year. the total for those 2 tickets would have cost me $1,800 dollars cash.

i also got $200 dollars in airline fee credits. i used them for an upgrade to premium economy on an earlier trip and to get into a United Club lounge.

and since i didn't pay amex any money for it (remember the annual fee was waived) IT WAS ALL FREE
