there are more options than ever and the mainstream world sticks to games longer. I think both can be true.

Yeah, I agree with this. On one hand, the sheer number of ways to play and consume video games has exploded in an incredible way. You have everything from free-to-play mobile games to premium console games, and everything in between, stretched across a numerous different successful platforms.

Undoubtedly, I think people today -- everyone, not just younger generations -- live in a perpetual state of anticipation and hype for the future, rather than truly processing and playing what's out right now, but at the same time, the biggest games today aren't the ones that have only just released. All the big games are ones that by their very nature are meant to stick around, to be played for infinitely, and see continual updates and new content to keep people coming back and hooked.

People hooked on the biggest games today have more reason than ever before to keep playing those games for one, two, three years after they have released, consistently. A God of War can come out, get all the hype, but after it had its time in the sun, people are back to League of Legends or Fortnite or Minecraft without missing a beat.

well yeah but the point is that 20 years later we're still calling them two of the greatest games ever made

Are there any games made in the last 5 years that kids and teens will still be hailing as one of the best games ever 20 years from now?

That's sort of an impossible question, I think. Asking a group of older people, who believe the greatest game(s) of all time came during their youth, about if there are games that could stand the test of time for young people today is a little difficult. Undoubtedly, there are cultural phenomenons that have stood the test of time already (Minecraft, League of Legends), and there are others that have only just recently came out that *could* be that (Overwatch, Fortnite, PUBG), but they're going to have to wait until people can reflect on them in that way.

The "greatest game of all time" will probably come in the form of a service--a socially connected, multiplayer-based, streamable experience that forsakes telling a beginning to end story, and is more about individual player stories about what they did or accomplished in the game. There will be that divide in how people feel about it because the games will look so different from what people like us consider the best games of all time, but that's always been the case!

You tend to be contemporaries with people who grew up around Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII -- namely, people who typically have still stuck around a place like GameFAQs. People older who valued, like, Link to the Past or Mario 3 tend to think of the 3D games as not being the hallmarks you do. People these days have their huge games that will leave tremendous impact on them, but you won't hear about it from people who still visit a forum like this. They're on YouTube or Twitch, or some other modern place, and they're talking about games that are highly social, multiplayer-centric games. Something like League of Legends or Minecraft are bigger today for younger people than *any* N64 or PS1 or PS2 video game have ever been, but not for us!

People have a weird fascination with exclusives. That matters when you're trying to make a decision on which console to buy, but once you've made that jump, the entirety of the library of that console becomes *why* that console is great. There's no sense in boiling the PS4 down to its strict exclusives when judging its quality as a platform because virtually every new video game that isn't from Nintendo or Microsoft's studios are available on it. The only time you would boil it down that way is if you're comparing the PS4 to the Xbox, or the PC, since there would be a lot of crossover. But generally speaking? If you have a PS4, if you buy most of your video games there, it doesn't matter that some of those came out elsewhere when you judge its legacy.

The joy of Odyssey is truly what you make of it. By that, I mean how much fun you enjoy running and jumping through fun themed worlds, occasionally stumbling upon moons or the odd mini-challenge. If you get life from trying to make stupidly impossible jumps that serve no purpose other than to do it, this is your game, haha. Odyssey is just a super fun game to sit down and play, with no pressure for an underlying point. Its the other side of the coin to Mario 3D World.

The exception to all this is New Donk City.

I agree completelya handful of more worlds with the depth, variety and fun of NDC would have taken it to (even greater) heights. That, plus Darker Side of the Moonwhat a joy that whole production was.

(I know how you could feel this way, actually. The progression, the sense of purpose, the level designit isnt as immediately strong or focused. I think Odyssey lives and breathes on how incredible its mechanics are, rather than the level design or platforming challenges.)

Also, god, I picked the absolute worst time to grab AC: Origins (a sprawling open world game with like 100 quests between main and side stories) and Vermintide 2 (L4D game with loot and some persistence, begging you to play just one more mission), because over the next month there's the release of two games I Kickstarted (Battletech, Pillars of Eternity 2), two new games in series I love (Yakuza 6, State of Decay 2), two Overwatch events, and the much-delayed Ys 8 PC release. HM posted his games of summer a while back and I'm probably gonna be working through these games right up until September when the cycle begins anew.

It feels like a surprisingly busy summer of video games, doesnt it? So many good games coming out to play! I want all the fun details of Yakuza 6 as you go through it! The screenshots, the anecdotes, the karaoke minigames!

Good news! The SEGA Mini might be a total bust of an announcement, but fortunately, the Switch is getting classic ports by M2, maybe even some Saturn and Dreamcast games. This is a fair trade off. Maybe, as long as the prices are fair!

Also, Valkyria Chronicles 1 is coming to Switch at the same time as VC4. Its eShop only, but excellent news for the few, the proud, the non-Windows PC owners out there.

I didnt find Infamous too enjoyable in any real way. Im not sure what the answer to that would be. When it comes to open world games, I dont think they focus too much on the act of traversing their big worlds as much as making them big. That's not that true. It produced a lot of consensus great games up through X.

After that they did try changing the gameplay around a bit with more actiony kinda stuff with 12... but then they made 3 13s and 2 MMOs and re-released all their old games a few times. It was the same games over and over for over a decade. 12 and 13 even had the same typical kind of story structure.

XV was massively unique and innovative, which is why it received praise despite being totally broken and unfinished. But it's definitely too little too late. And it's clear they are spending the next 5 years just releasing more bits of that game. So if you don't like XV you're screwed until like 2025

I'm not sure the discussion about "consensus" games is too fruitful. What metric are we using for that? Critic opinions? Our anecdotal thoughts on what we've seen via the Internet? It's an argument with almost no end, haha. What I would say is that I considered FF6, 7 and 10 to qualify as the truly great consensus games, with everything else being anywhere from unremarkable to good, and all the division that comes with having those labels. Final Fantasy arguments are so frequent for a reason!

You're preaching to the choir about the lost years of Square Enix. That's about the point when they lost me as a big fan. What I would say about Final Fantasy during that time is that it still managed to hold on to its relevance, importance and impact, even when every other series in the genre was having its lunch eaten by Western RPGs -- and Western games generally. Final Fantasy is adaptable. It spices things up, it tries new ideas in some way, and that's what I think keeps people coming back. It doesn't necessarily mean every game is a revelation and a leap forward, but that it isn't afraid to do something totally different from the previous game. I don't even know how to qualify what makes a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game, outside of its name, and that's partly a tribute to how it has evolved and changed over the years. That's what, I think, keeps people's interest piqued when a new is announced, even if they hated the one before. It's different than, say, Dragon Quest. When a new one of those is announced you know exactly what you're getting, and you either like that or don't!

Also can the #1 series really be something that hasn't put out a (consensus) great game in 17 years?

I think the true point about Final Fantasy is that it rarely produces consensus games, but the magic about that is that there is going to be one or two or three that are tailor made for you, even if another three arent. Its that variety and experimentation that has kept it relevant today, and is both its blessing and its curse. I dont think its the best, but historically, significantly, and culturally, its hard to say theres a contender to Final Fantasy for #1.

(The last great, new, Final Fantasy game was only 12 years ago!)

I don't think it's the dead part of year anymore but I'd have to look at a release schedule of games from years past. On memory, I think The Witcher 3, Splatoon 2, Prey, and Trails the 3rd came out in summer.

Oh, did The Witcher 3 come out during the summer? For some reason, I always had it in my head that it was a holiday release, probably due to it being such a huge hit.

Runner3 (May 22)
Mario Tennis Aces (June 22)
Ys VIII (June 2018)
Crash Bandicoot (July 10)
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (July 13)
Octopath Traveler (July 13)
Hyper Light Drifter (Summer)
Okami HD (Summer)
The Messenger (Summer)

It's probably not feasible to think I'll get around to all of these, but all of them have caught my eye. Usually, there might be one game over the summer that would stand out, but there's quite a few coming that have my eye. Splatoon has become such a staple Nintendo franchise so quickly. That it found the kind of success it did on the Wii U, being a totally new IP, is incredible. It fills a hole in the Nintendo lineup, too, as this unique competitive online shooter-esque experience that they never had before. Splatoon has found itself right alongside Mario or Zelda as a pillar franchise.

I think they were hoping ARMs would catch the same lightning in the bottle, as a fighting game compliment to Smash Bros., but that seemingly hasnt panned out in that big way. Generally, I like this exploration of new ideas with new characters to add into the mix as properties to go along with their staples.

I love seeing all these charts and lists out of GDC. There was a top ten best selling indie games on the Switch for its one year that was interesting to see. Let me see...

SteamWorld Dig 2
Stardew Valley
Kamiko
Celeste
Fast RMX

NBA Playgrounds
Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove

Stardew Valley has never left the best selling list on the eShop since it was out. The longevity of that game is remarkable.

I love how much fun it is to play. Not even in the level design, or objective, sense, but more in how Mario feels in your hands, how nice running and jumping is. Its a true Mario 64 successor in that regard.

I find part of the joy within the levels is figuring out what crazy traversal antics I can get into, rather than Moon hunting (but it inevitably will lead me there as a result). Can I make that jump? Can I try to scale this in a different way? Cappys such a complimentary tool, too! I dont know that any game has been so mechanically strong as Odyssey.
