They'll overwhelm you first with pointless garbage about the color and cut and stuff that arbitrarily affects the value. Use that to figure out what you want. Then take that knowledge to a different store bc the first store knows you're an amateur at this point so they'll try to take advantage. Do your bartering elsewhere, get a quote, take it back to the OG place to get the best deal. or get one of those sweet lab made diamonds for way cheaper. no blood on your hands. He's a smart cookie and he probably had a higher message beyond name calling.
