David Goodall: doctors threaten 104-year-old scientist's bid to end his life

Doctors in Perth are threatening to stop Australias oldest scientist through voluntary euthanasia.

Edith Cowan University honorary research associate David Goodall, 104, does not have a terminal illness but his quality of life has deteriorated.

Euthanasia campaigner Philip Nitschke said Goodall had attempted suicide about two months ago after suffering a fall, ended up in hospital and his daughter had to fight hard to get him out only succeeding after arranging an independent psychiatric review.

The doctors started to say hes talking about ending his life, theres nothing much wrong with him, so therefore hes a risk to himself, Nitschke said.

He said Goodall was keen to leave the country after the hospital experience.

On the basis of that, he said enough is enough nows the time to die, Nitschke said.

And now the doctors who treated him are threatening to prevent him leaving, arguing hes a danger to himself and not fit to travel, which the airline would respond to, according to Nitschke.

I dont know whether they would be successful or whether its just a threat.

Its worrying the hell out of David and his daughter.

Nitschke urged the doctors to back off.

Marshall Perron, the former Northern Territory chief minister who introduced Australias first voluntary euthanasia legislation, said it was tragic Goodall could not have his wishes met at home.

I understand his plight and fully support what hes trying to do, Perron said. Philip is very keen to push for those people who are not terminally ill to have access to die the rest of us are a bit more cautious than that.

However ... the average person who gets to be 100-plus ought to be able to have the right to say when they believe theyve lived their life to the full and would rather not continue.

Australian dad who choked his stepdaughters bully hailed as a hero but was he right?

After his stepdaughter was being tormented by a bully in school, Mark Bladen took matters into his own hands.

The 53-year-old Australian father recently spoke with 60 Minutes Australia after a video of him choking and abusing his stepdaughters alleged bully last month went viral.

Bladen said he wanted to give the teenager a good old-fashioned talking to but after the alleged bully kept smiling, he snapped.

Im not proud of it, he recalled. I was sucked in, I let my standards drop and, you know, Doctor Jekyll came out.

His stepdaughter Kalani, 15, told the broadcast she was being bullied for her body hair, pushed and was spat on over the course of six months. While she kept most of the details from her family, one afternoon she called her stepfather crying and told him the bully was at a local skate park.

I was OK with it I dont like to see my daughter sad and crying and telling me that shes useless [and] she cant do anything, Kalanis mother Jennifer told the show. Both parents said the bullying has stopped and after the encounter, Bladen was fined $1,000 but criminal no conviction was reported, 9 News reports.

And although he regrets his actions, Bladen told the show he still doesnt think he was a bully, I would say that I was out of order.

They tried to go serious & gritty in the 1st 2 Thor movies and it didn't do so well.

They figured out what the audience wanted and went GotG for Thor 3 and it worked.

But for some reason this formula doesn't work very well with Age of Ultron. Probably because a robot with quips just doesn't sound menacing at all.

Prom dress prompts 'cultural appropriation' row





A high school student's prom pictures have generated a furious debate online after some social media users accused the 18-year-old of "cultural appropriation".

Twitter user Keziah, who is not Chinese, posted pictures of herself wearing a cheongsam, or qipao - a traditional Chinese dress - for her prom in Utah, USA, last week.

In a widely-shared response to the pictures, one Twitter user, Jeremy Lam, tweeted: "My culture is not your... prom dress".

The original tweet, and Lam's criticism on Friday night, have attracted hundreds of thousands of likes, tens of thousands of retweets, and thousands more comments as supporters and critics clashed over the weekend over the concept of cultural appropriation - the adoption of minority cultures, typically by dominant cultures.

Mr Lam explained on Twitter why he found the photos troubling. He said the qipao began as a formless gown for house cleaning and was turned into a symbol of female empowerment.

"In a time where Asian women were silenced they were able to create not only a piece of art but a symbol of activism," he wrote.

"This piece of clothing embraced femininity, confidence and gender equality through its beautiful, eye-catching appearance.

"The style was then spread throughout Asia as a beautiful garment and sign of women's liberation.

"I'm proud of my culture, including the extreme barriers marginalised people within that culture have had to overcome those obstacles. For it to simply be subject to American consumerism and cater to a white audience is parallel to colonial ideology."

Mr Lam's post clearly struck a chord. By the time of writing it had been liked more than 167,000 times and retweeted close to 40,000 times.

However, after some commenters suggested Keziah should remove the pictures, she refused.

"To everyone causing so much negativity: I mean no disrespect to the Chinese culture," she wrote.

"I'm simply showing my appreciation to their culture. I'm not deleting my post because I've done nothing but show my love for the culture. It's a... dress. And it's beautiful."

Kim Jong Un agrees to meet Donald Trump at DMZ, source says

Seoul, South Korea (CNN)South Korean President Moon Jae-in has convinced North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to hold his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump at the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, a source tells CNN.

Moon and Kim met at the same location in Panmunjom last Friday, a historically significant event that was televised worldwide and led to an agreement to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and formally end the Korean War.

There is a "strong possibility" the summit will be held at the site, with some events possibly scheduled on the northern side of the military demarcation line separating the two countries, according to an official with deep knowledge of North Korea's thinking on the matter.

The venue makes the most sense logistically for Kim, the source said, because media facilities and equipment are already in place, which could the allow the summit to take place "in late May."

Traveling to the northern side of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) would also provide a historic opportunity for Trump, the source said, adding that Moon may be involved in the summit in some capacity.

A spokesperson for the South Korean president appeared to endorse the venue choice when asked about the proposal, Tuesday.

"(We) think Panmunjom is quite meaningful as a place to erode the divide and establish a new milestone for peace," the spokesperson told reporters. "Wouldn't Panmunjom be the most symbolic place?"

David Goodall: 104-year-old scientist to end own life in Switzerland

Australias oldest scientist, who caused a stir when his university tried to vacate his office aged 102, will fly to Switzerland in early May to end his life, reigniting a national euthanasia debate.

David Goodall, who is now 104, does not have a terminal illness but his quality of life has deteriorated and he has secured a fast-track appointment with an assisted dying agency in Basel, euthanasia advocates said.

I greatly regret having reached that age, the ecologist told broadcaster ABC on his birthday earlier this month. Im not happy. I want to die. Its not sad particularly. What is sad is if one is prevented.

My feeling is that an old person like myself should have full citizenship rights including the right of assisted suicide, he added.

Assisted suicide is illegal in most countries around the world and was banned in Australia until the state of Victoria became the first to legalise the practice last year.

But that legislation, which takes effect from June 2019, only applies to terminally ill patients of sound mind and a life expectancy of less than six months.

Other states in Australia have debated euthanasia in the past, but the proposals have always been defeated, mostly recently in New South Wales state last year. It was legalised in the Northern Territory, which is not a state, in 1995, but the commonwealth government overturned that legislation in 1997.

Exit International, which is helping Goodall make the trip, said it was unjust that one of Australias oldest and most prominent citizens should be forced to travel to the other side of the world to die with dignity.

A peaceful, dignified death is the entitlement of all who want it. And a person should not be forced to leave home to achieve it, it said on its website Monday.
