Today in science class we learned that microwaves work by heating up the water molecules in food and that heats it up. So if you put something with no water like a brick in the microwave and turn it on, it won't get hot. Neat, huh?

I go to my local chinese food place about 2-3 times a week, I'm pretty good friends with the owner. Yesterday I went in for lunch and the owner was acting really weird and standoffish while usually we're on pretty good terms. I asked him what was wrong and eventually he told me to "leave and never come back". I pushed him a little more while I was waiting for my order because he seemed nervous or guilty and he told me that the Chinese mafia in the area have been putting the squeeze or w/e on local businesses and to intimidate them they left a cake outside the shop overnight. Inside the cake was a scroll with a list of all the store's most frequent customers' full names and addresses, and I was near the top of the list.

I am seriously freaking the fuck out right now and I have no idea what to even do or what my recourse is. I'm a non-violent person and I've never owned any guns but I'm really close to picking up a rifle at Wal-Mart and taking vacation time from work to lay low for a few weeks. Should I go to the police? What could they even do? I'm fucking terrified.

When I was in first grade, our teacher would punish us sometimes by making the whole class put their heads down on the desk and be quiet. To me, it wasn't a punishment. I closed my eyes, felt the cool desk on my face, and imagined I was in Super Mario 64, swimming around in the secret aquarium level with the music playing in the background, gliding freely through the water, looking out the windows at the multicolored skies. It may not seem like much, but it's one of my core memories. And I'm so grateful to all the artists at Nintendo for the work they do and the joy they bring to our lives.

Somewhere between 1992-1995, I would say, I remember a commercial of Hulk Hogan advertising a certain pair of shoes. Inside the sole there was a drawer-like compartment in which one was supposed to keep small pieces of meat such as beef jerky or ham. This meat would be kept warm while they walked.

I have asked roughly 20 people if they remember this product, none of them do. Someone suggested that due to the outrageousness of the product, it's possible that I am remembering a spoof commercial from Saturday Night Live. That is most definitely a possibility. But I remember seeing this commercial on more than one occasion. Certainly my seven-year-old self couldn't have been having reoccurring dreams of Hulk Hogan shoes. Help me, luelinks.

I mean, yeah...it's usually for a bad reason, like that you're sick or injured..

...but in a weird way, I almost liked staying in the hospital for a few days. Just the feeling of being taken care and being pampered...having your meals delivered, having your own TV to watch all day, sleeping if you want.

It's not the best time...but it's certainly not the worst ... well, depending on why you're there obviously. Even so, I guess just the "having everyone do things for you" part of it gets me. : p

Also, the "food is horrible" cliche is a myth. I've never had bad hospital food. At one place I stayed at, you could order virtually anything from fried chicken to apple pie. Breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon and toast...maybe a lunch of teriyaki chicken...dinner of a hot open-faced roast beef sandwich. Yeah...I'm not shitting you. This is the food this hospital offered. And at other hospitals I've stayed at, I've gotten similar meals. Meals that weren't bad at all and were actually very good and tasty. You get a long list of choices too.

Yeah, I know...God forbid something really serious happens that makes me have to stay there for a long time...
...but sometimes, for a rare moment, I think about how nice it would be to stay there while not being sick. Better than a motel. : p

Weekends are busy, we have a lot of prep we have to do for the lunch and dinner rush. Most places are technically open because they don't want to pay unless the store is open but it's considered bad form to order in the morning, a few orders or a single large order can put us behind hours. Ordering ahead of time is ok, but please don't order delivery for "as soon as possible" before noon on weekends.

I went to a local Mexican restaurant that has $1 tacos for 'Taco Tuesday.' It's a Chipotle style line where you choose hard or soft taco, chicken or beef, and you can add up to three "toppings" from the following: lettuce, salsa, corn, rice and beans, sour cream, or spicy sour cream. I think there were a few others but they are of no use to this story.

So I walk up to the start of the line and she asks me what I want. I say: "Hi. I'll have six tacos. Three hard and three soft. Three with chicken, and three with beef, but not so that all the chicken or beef are on the same style taco. I'll have any three toppings between lettuce, salsa, rice and beans, sour cream and spicy sour cream such that salsa and any style of sour cream is on all of them and that no two tacos have the exact same contents."

She looks at my face for a few seconds with a blank stare before saying, "Fuck this" and just walks to the back where the customer can't see, and then like 15 seconds later walks down the hallway and out the door and gets into her car. Then some guy comes out from the back, who I assume is the manager, with a concerned look on his face, apologizes and takes my order. Other employees were really confused.

Tacos were okay.
