It's almost always free, in my experience. The only time you have to pay is when it's in a bottle or can. Given how competitive the local culinary scene is, most restaurants realize they have to do them for free or risk losing customers who will go elsewhere over that.

Here, we weren't all that happy with the invaders coming to the board just to laugh in our faces, though it was tame compared to the 2013 contest.

I hope this next one is a good ol' 64-entrant, 1v1 character battle with one 24-hour match a day. It's better when it's not rushed and there's no "gimmick" to it - it's just straight up characters or games.

Curious what you guys would say. I'd think L-Block and the 2002 one with the fabled Mario vs. Crono match would be toward the top for a lot of people. That said, I wasn't here in 2002 - many of us weren't! Hell, there are users on this board that weren't even born when that match happened.

Obviously the newer stuff is toward the bottom. Did this "Best Year in Gaming" thing even happen or are we just pretending it didn't since it didn't even make the B8 Wiki? And before that, we had two toxic messes...

I don't know how you can call Caramoan's reunion the most offensive after the reunions we've had the last 2 seasons.

Caramoan had more time and focused even less on the castaways to allow for Boston Rob to plug his new book and Hatch and Rudy to "reminisce" about Borneo in... inappropriate ways. And at least the HHH and GI finales let the pre-jury on stage.

The entire finale was terrible, however, not just the reunion. Mix that with one of the most intolerably cringe-worthy pre-merges the show will ever see and the end result is a clearly bottom-tier season.

If it weren't for Malcolm doing "Hold up, Bro" followed by his double-idol stunt, it would have been even lower on my list. The Phillip boot episode is one of the best in the entire series, but the rest of the season is just putrid to watch.

Inviso also touches on the point that there are barely any actual "favorites" here. Cochran and Andrea emerged, of course, but most of this cast has never and will never fulfill that label. Micronesia... all ten of them either were a "favorite" going in or became one during the course of that season. With Caramoan, it was obviously never going to be possible.

Gaming:
Tales of Xillia: I am impressed. I mean, Fenmont is too massive and that's a problem for navigating (some of these areas are unnecessary), but it's a beautiful city despite the eternal night. Also Agria belongs in an insane asylum - she's even more bananas than I remembered! She's psychotic and demented. NOBODY gets away with talking to Leia like that on my watch. I can't wait to kill Agria later. One thing I do like is that I'm not sure who the main antagonist is. Exodus is clearly a major one, but who are they involved with? Are they tied up in King Nachtigal's desires for world domination? Or King Gaius's mind games and bloodlust? Both of those kings are obviously bad men, but so far only one is an actual criminal. The one we're about to go kill. Gotta wonder what's going to happen because of it... Overall, loving this game. Complex plot, compelling characters, interesting world, and fun battles. It's not as good as Abyss was for me but it's probably my second-favorite Tales.

That's all I have to update that isn't StreetPass games, which are dying rapidly. That's kind of sad.

On the radar: I'm also interested in Octopath Traveler but I don't expect to get it soon. I have enough JRPGs to play first. Want to clear out some backlogjam before I buy any more 70-hour games.

Introspection:
What's going on in my head? A lot of shit. Most of it isn't good. While I'm eagerly anticipating moving out this fall and LOVING this weather, I also have several significant issues on my mind. Dark stuff. READ AT YOUR OWN DISRECTION.

1. I am having serious trust issues with so many people. I get it - when you pay someone to cut your hair, you trust the barber. When you get on a bus, you trust the driver. Etc. I'm not talking about that kind of trust. I'm talking about being able open up. This is largely due to the last time I did to my parents, they got all vindictive and berated me, which permanently scarred my psyche and has caused me to not want to spend time with them. That is why I am excluding several things from this list.
2. I'm at the point where I don't even recognize my own city. So much has changed in the past decade - as in, they've torn down buildings galore, because they like to do that instead of repurposing what they can for some reason, and many longtime fixtures are gone - that I don't even feel like this is "home" to me anymore. That said, I don't want to leave - my friends and family are all here - so yeah. It's just a weird feeling. Kind of like an identity crisis.
3. The latest girl I asked out had a boyfriend even though she made it blatantly clear that she was interested in me. No mistaking it. A fixated look like that will convince ANY guy of interest. I'm trying to repair my heart from this. It's difficult. I'm wondering what I need to do... I feel so lost without love motivating me the way it has. It's a bizarre feeling I'm trying to come to terms with.

Cooking: Currently thinking of an "experiment." An omelet with the duck eggs I have, goat cheese, tomatoes, onions, basil, and bacon. I think this isn't too much of an overkill like the "old me" would have wanted to try for. I've learned that simpler is often tastier.

What we need is a regular ol' 64-entrant bracketed tourney with one 24-hour match a day. It takes two months (there are 63 losers and a third-place match), sure, but it sure is fun! That kind of buildup gets more people to come back to the site.

Yeah, I got by far the most loot in 2016. I looked around and there wasn't much worth it. Just a few things for my kitchen. One of which I got. Nothing gaming-related - not that I'm interested given the size of my backlog. The only game I am currently interested in is Octopath Traveler...

Twitter was the only social network I was using but it got toxic earlier this year and I've laid low ever since. I've unfollowed many people for vitriolic posts this year. Even blocked some that were worse than that. But it's becoming too much work, sadly...

I boycott Konami because of obvious reasons - they treat their employees vindictively. Probably worse than Amazon doing whatever. I boycott Apple as well because of their overpriced garbage, poor treatment of employees, lack of charity, and megalomania. And I boycott all California dairy products due to a political attack ad on my home state of Wisconsin that was completely unnecessary. These are the three evil corporations that I consciously boycott.

I used to boycott Walmart until the factory fire in Bangladesh woke them up to a lot of their misdeeds. That is done now.

I also don't go to a couple of local restaurants for various reasons.

I don't think it's self-absorbed. Some of us just need a place to vent. And I don't necessarily mean vent about bad stuff - sometimes if we're really engaged in a game we just want to share our experience with it with someone.

I have both ends of a spectrum here. I'm really feeling Xillia - and boy, do I need a game that I'm that into right now given all the shit that's bogging down my mind. And frankly, I don't even know where to start with that...

You're absolutely right on a lot of that, Inviso - but the other thing was that the cast in Cambodia clicked way better than several of the seasons that followed. They were all motivated to do their voters proud. That is the fundamental difference not only in fan investment but in gameplay. Everyone was playing their heart out. That was missing from Lame Changers, HHH, and Ghost Island. The joy was gone. MvX had that joy, it had people playing to win, it had a compelling group of people.

The producers' attempts to replicate Cambodia have failed because 1) the cast wasn't chosen by fans - investing both the viewers and the players, 2) they have stripped away the soul of the show, the showcase of personality and/or character arcs that haven't been present in these last three seasons, 3) the edits have been formulaic and have disregarded the castaways for who they are in an attempt to shoehorn them into redundant archetypes, and 4) the formula is so "played out" - it worked for Cambodia because it was new then. Now, with every downside you said, it's all played out. The 2:3 swaps, the casts of 20 in newbie seasons, the multiple advantages and excessive amount of idols, unnecessary twists, highly abbreviated finales, and the overall lack of joy have all become exhaustive to watch because it's nothing new. The show has fallen into a formula that worked once but has only worked decently once since - and that's because it was LESS in-your-face (MvX).

The reason I'm so disengaged with Survivor now is not because I can't help choose a cast. It's because the castaways have become characters on a screen instead of real people being agog with excitement to be on Survivor. It's because I don't feel a connection to most of the cast - and the one time I did, she got voted out tragically fast. It's because the edit is more focused on developing advantages and twists than it is players. I have no reason to care about the players anymore because the show doesn't give it to me - they're gamebots more than real people. The show has lost its sense of self and, while it recovered from that once before, it's highly improbable that it will again. Production has too much a hand in the narrative now given how they plant idols, have twists, and "push" contestants in certain ways. I doubt there will ever be another Cagayan that plays out naturally and epically because production is unknowingly preventing that from happening. It's sad.

This would be basically me updating what I'm doing like Leon and Tombolo do. It would be a more actively engaging topic with you guys pointing me in the direction of what to play/watch/listen to/etc. I've made my taste in music clear enough with those lyrics topics, which would be much less frequent in this case.

Part of this is that my backlog topic at my hideout has no engagement at all and I feel like it's not motivating me to play the games I do have so yeah...

HHH could have been incredible but they ruined it with spoon-feeding Ben idols and not giving anyone forewarning of the twist at the end that was hugely advantageous to Ben. I like Ben and all, but he should have been 4th place. Devon or Chrissy would have won - Devon could have articulated his case quite well and the hard evidence to prove it was in him voting for Dr. Mike solely on a hunch.

It's notable that you call Ben "an unbearable asshole" and say that plummets the season's ranking for you. It's precisely why Kaoh Rong's ranking plummeted for me. Scot and Jason were unbearable. They reminded me of some of the most vindictive bullies I dealt with in my life. And that they got the last laugh at the end ruined the overall story for me. Also, there was Joe del Campo's unnecessary Medevac - they just treated him in the medical tent and he didn't need a hospital, therefore he shouldn't have been removed from the game. Had that not happened and Aubry won, Kaoh Rong would have been much higher for me. I look at it the same way you look at HHH.

Sure, it's a good character season, and Scot's blindside is one of the best things ever in Survivor, but the dark, negative parts ruin Kaoh Rong for me.

And yet you failed to mention that the one thing Cambodia DID have was a great villain in Abi-Maria who was the one person who was consistently electric as both a character and a player.

But yeah, Cambodia had a lot of character stuff. Sure, some of it was one-note, but it was there. Those things were absent from HHH and Ghost. And it was those stories of people coming into their own that made Survivor a Thing in the first place - and now it's gone in favor of STRATEGY TWISTS STRATEGY STRATEGY STRATEGY due to their attempts to replicate the level of play in Cambodia. I felt really satisfied by those stories that were present in Cambodia, personally, because I liked that group so much, but to each his own.

It's funny how we can often come to the same conclusion but disagree on how we got there. This statement I agree with wholeheartedly and no recent season shows this better than HHH. That season had its flaws, but the cast was not one of them. That was a group that was clearly capable of putting on a good show with few if any duds, but the producers just didn't let them between the overabundance of idols and shit editing of the last few episodes.

Same goes for Ghost Island. Both HHH and Ghost Island had great casts, but they weren't shown to be having fun out there. The best people in Ghost were gone in the first eight episodes, however, which significantly undermined the joy later on. The personality in both seasons was drowned out by the advantages, swaps, and other twists and we instead got a really sad excuse for a narrative.

They need to get rid of the advantages. They need to only do one swap a season at most - and only if it's needed. They need to make it so there are only 4 idols a season maximum - one per tribe with one or two rehidden at the merge after being played. No stupid gimmick twists, either. Just let them play the damn game and add stuff if it's getting predictable. They're not going to replicate Cambodia if they force it. And because they're forcing it so much, they're suffocating the show to the point it's lost its heart and soul. It no longer feels organic. It feels completely controlled by production. There's no way they'll EVER get another Cagayan-like "Renaissance season" if they continue to control so much.

Let's see...
1. Wentworth clearly having fun the entire time
2. Keith Nale's "You Call, We'll Haul"
3. Jeremy playing for his family
4. Spencer's semi-cheesy "relationship building" story arc
5. Chaos Kass actually improving her social game by leaps and bounds
6. Fishbach claiming his "Know-It-All" status and trying to play to live up to it
7. Varner's attempts to make deals with everybody and try to play the modern Survivor game
8. Terry Deitz being pulled from the game like that.
9. Hell, even Kimmi.

That's just what came to mind in two minutes. Sure, it doesn't have the same level of depth and complexity of character as some other seasons do, but it has enough to be ultimately satisfying.

Cambodia is phenomenal but the show's attempts to replicate it are what's killing the franchise. The "two swaps" and "merge at 13" were fine in Cambodia, but they were utterly terrible in Ghost Island because it's getting to be overkill - they were curveballs that should have happened only once in a while. The attempt to replicate it through a strategy-only edit is pathetic, because at least Cambodia had people with a soul. It was awesome to see Wentworth come into her own and there were stories there with Jeremy, Spencer, and Chaos Kass, plus plenty of personality to go around (Keith Nale in particular).

Basically, the show had one great season and they're so desperate to recapture the magic that they've lost sight of how having a great cast and showing them properly goes a long way. In Ghost Island, I chalk that up to editing and how producers tried to coerce strategic-focused confessionals over opening up personally. The ending was a phenomenal scene but it didn't have the satisfaction because they never gave us much reason to care about the castaways. That is something they DID do in Cambodia - and that was largely due to the fan vote beforehand.

It really doesn't feel like Survivor anymore because production is treating it like human chess as opposed to a social experiment. It falls flat because it didn't have the heart that the show's best seasons had. The best seasons have both personality/character development AND strategy to dissect. Ghost Island had neither and that's ultimately why it fell so low in my rankings. Cambodia has both.
