Lol, no it isn't. It sounds completely unnatural and that's not at all how people use it (until the attack helicopter era where a small percentage of people force it).

"So Mom, Jamie is going to school to be a pharmacist like you."

Jamie: "You mean a legal drug dealer!"

"Hahaha Jamie is such a joker, aren't they?"

whether or not it "sounds completely unnatural" is subjective. it doesn't to my ears, because I grew up speaking English as my first language. maybe you come from a different background.

but, on an objective level, the idea that "that's not at all how people use it" is incorrect. the singular "they" has been in use for centuries in that context. Chaucer used it - it's quite literally older than modern English.

so... sorry, but I trust most major English literary giants from the past ~650 years over you.

It's a fucking girl.

not generally a good idea to refer to a sapient human being as "it"

Not what I meant.

"It" referring to the situation at hand rather than being their personal pronoun.

wat

Like how when a baby is born they might say "it's a girl!"

That sort of usage.

Whatever, the longer it's explained the worse the effect.

FYI "femme" is often used for female-presenting nonbinary people. this person uses they/them though. if they're in a similar getup tomorrow I'll probably ask what they think of being referred to as "femme"

Your reading comprehension could use some work. More like, "Unless you actually are a parent yourself, you're speaking from a position of ignorance and no actual parent is gonna care what your opinion is."

Being a parent doesn't impart you with some divine knowledge of how to raise kids. It is why so many are shit at it after all.

It is something, just like anything else, you have to learn and practise at. And be willing to improve on when you've been doing it badly for awhile.

Right. But at least you have some actual experience to draw from and you won't suggest hilariously ridiculous things like "Just reason with them!" In regards to dealing with a 2 year old. It's just that a large portion of the anti spanking crowd have no kids but love pointing to links and talking down to people. And love talking out of their ass when it comes to parenting. Even though most of them don't have the slightest idea what they're talking about.

Without reading the thread, college tuition can never be "free," it can only be subsidized by others. And when the argument becomes "why should I have to pay for other people's education costs" it becomes a very legitimate argument when you look at how few people actually use their degree- about a quarter.

you're misunderstanding the purpose of a ton of degrees here.

with a business degree or an engineering degree, the value is in the physical piece of paper that you get at the end - I know a lot of rich kids who went to my school so they could get a degree and take over the family business.

with, say, a philosophy degree or a music degree, the value is in what you do while you're there: making connections, learning things, building your skills.

the whole idea that a degree should be "used" once it's obtained is completely writing off the latter catogory of degrees

Tuition = $10k
Other costs = $10k
Outside help = $0
Total Cost of Living = $20k

By your number of $15k income, that means $5k in loans you need every year or $20k by the time you graduate. That's a totally manageable amount. And hopefully your tuition (or total college costs) would be less than $10k, especially if you go to community college at first.

do you really think starting your working adult life with $20 000 in debt is "totally manageable"?

I've disagreed with a lot of TC's points thus far, and I am of the belief that college should be free, but...

I'm probably gonna be somewhere in the realm of $20k in debt after graduating. I consider it to be a reasonable investment as a Mechanical Engineering major, for what it's worth.

I'm just considering it to be investing in myself at this point.

I graduated with like 12k debt. with things going the way they've been going, I'll likely have it paid off within 3 years at the most.

a lot of people ITT are mistaking a systemic problem for a personal one.

the problem is not "my student debt is too high", but "university is too expensive." one person getting a good job after graduating is not going to fix that.

Not really.

I'm of the opinion that not everyone really puts that higher education to use. A lot of it is lost on the average person simply because they're...well, kinda dumb.

firstly, this is such a vague assertion that it's effectively meaningless
second, I'm not at all convinced that it's even true
third, even if it is true, that doesn't mean they shouldn't have had that education for free

Damn_Underscore posted...
I agree, but if you are just graduating HS and you have no outside sources of income then it is.

If you make smart choices and work harder than the average student (not every college student even has a job) and you have to take ~$20k in debt to make that work, then that will be paid off in just 10 years and your kids can go to college for free.

Let's say you make $2000 a month after you graduate ($24k annually, which is not that much) and 1/2 of that goes to all your living expenses. After you pay the loan payment, you still have about $1000 left every month to save or spend on whatever. You may not be able to save as much as much as you could have or gone on as many vacations as you could have in your life, but you will be able to pay off that debt with no worries.

this level of missing the point is usually reserved for sitcom characters like Michael Scott meant to be caricatures of this point of view.

There are only a few college majors that teach you a skill that would get you hired to a great job easily. However, if you do a professional internship (which many programs require) then anyone could be (and often are) offered a great job regardless of major.

getting hired to a great job is not necessarily the purpose of higher education.

Damn_Underscore posted...
Consider that mortgages often last for 30 years and usually cost over $1000 a month, if not more.

Not all debt is bad.

this is... irrelevant to what I said. debt restricts people. debt limits what people can do. people in their 20s, fresh from their undergrad, should not have a massive debt that will take them 10 years to pay off

With the standard interest rate of an online calculator (6.8%) it's about $230 a month for 10 years. So yes, unless you have an awful job.

why do you think it's reasonable for someone to be constrained by student debt well into their 30s?

I never smoked, but a former roommate did. he had a lot of trouble quitting - smoked for over 12 years if memory serves. he would quit, be fine for a while, then one day he would get drunk and start again.

so when he moved to my school's town, one of the first things he did was quit. but this time he quit while he was drunk. apparently that made all the difference - he hasn't smoked since as far as I know.

anyway, there are a few things you can do that will help:
-replace one habit with another. as an example, maybe every time you feel a craving, you do 5 pushups instead.
-meet new people. smokers tend to hang out together, and this social circle is part of what makes it hard to quit. find friends that don't smoke.

it's a pretty big change in lifestyle. good luck

no. personal property and private property are different things.
and I'm not altering the argument. I was making points based on that definition of working class from the beginning

And yes, plenty of working class people own homes. So you're still wrong.

working class people use their homes to live in, not to make money from other people. this means they are personal, rather than private, property.

So if you're going to use idiotic logic like "everything that's anti communist originated from the Nazis", well you just have to deal with all of the stupid arguments that are obviously bullshit that get used against you.

then it's a good thing I never said "everything that's anti communist originated from the Nazis"

Communism relies completely on meritocracy because in practice it depends on one authority or small group of authorities dictating the actions of everyone else and as you said all humans are biased, this affects communism even more. Like you said, humans are biased. Who's going to be the one who decides how equal burger flipping is compared to surgeons? Who's going to be the one who decides what the equal pay everyone is going to get is? At least with a free market different people can appeal to different people by different merits. And that's more realistic. Everyone has different values and interests unlike in communism which pretends like everyone are drones who all think and value the same things.
And nope, the average person is getting the perfect value of their labour. The average person doesn't work much.

I'm willing to educate you on this, but first I want you to acknowledge that that's what I'm doing. you have clearly not done your research before asking questions. you clearly don't know anything about communist theory.

I didn't say it was objective fact.

the rest of your post has its roots in nazi propaganda, so I suggest you not spout this drivel. like I said to the other person, I'm willing to educate you on this (as I clearly know much more than you do on the subject), but first I want you to admit that that's what I'm doing: say explicitly that you don't know what you're talking about (FYI I recognize these talking points from Jordan Peterson's lectures - he doesn't know what he's talking about on this subject either) and that I am educating you, not arguing with you.

If you get a job during college (especially during the summer) that is definitely affordable

10k a year for tuition. What about food, rent, utilities bill. If necessary, and I assume it would be because who lives close enough to school and their job for those that held down both, a car + gas + insurance. To cover living expenses, school expenses while holding down 40 hours a week you'd need to be pulling like 20 bucks an hour for this to be feasible.

Those would still be an issue if tuition was free...

The solution to that is to live at school/near campus with roommates. 20 hours a week part-time job would absolutely pay for your expenses. You may not be able to have much fun during college, but that's the cost of graduating with no debt.

And that's with no help from your parents.

a better solution is a student salary

this. I remember watching it a couple times and all the judges actually knew what they were talking about

Just because they're singers doesn't mean they know what they're talking. Most major singers don't even write their own shit and are carried by producers.

Like, come on, MILEY CYRUS as a judge? Lol. The only judge on The Voice who knows his shit is Pharrell.

have you heard the Backyard Sessions? or the version of Can't Stop that she did with The Roots? she's legitimately a good singer

and I'll gladly trust anyone who's actively involved in creating and performing music over anyone who isn't. again: has Simon Cowell ever performed a song? has he ever played with a band? has he ever even picked up an instrument?

They have actual singers. Both as contestants and judges.

this. I remember watching it a couple times and all the judges actually knew what they were talking about

compared to... has Simon Cowell ever sung a note in his life? ever even touched a physical instrument? why should I value his opinion on music at all?

there are more trans, Muslims, Mexicans, etc in states whose voters don't have an equal proportion of electors to the population compared to states that are lily white and have more inbreeding, lower statewide IQs, thus elections are unfairly skewed toward the party that is popular with racists and poorly educated people (Trump himself has said that he loves the poorly educated)

ok as much as I agree that the president shouldn't be decided by the electoral college, this is some seriously classist rhetoric.

there are lots of rich, "well-educated" people that voted for Trump. remember that Bush went to Yale.

seriously don't use shit like IQ to demonize people. it's a shitty, meaningless metric anyway

Lets give California and New York more control over this country, said no one ever.

electorally speaking, they have far less control per person than Florida, Maine, and Wisconsin

Im ok with that.

why?
