A lot of people are unwilling or unable to recognize the ways in which culture has historically been made to cater to people like them. That's viewed as the default, rather than the product of choices. A change in that, though, is felt as being a conscious decision.

Are you seriously saying that heterosexuality which the VAST majority of people are, and which is literally required for the human race to continue to exist shouldnt be considered the norm?

Where did he say that?

What do you mean by 'considered the norm' and why does that mean not referencing it anywhere?

It wasn't just Kaiden. People also whined about Steve.

They also whined about Dorian in Dragon Age Inquisition.

The complaints were always "These characters are defined by being gay and it's forced on me" which has always been ridiculous.

These same people would never criticize a woman solely being in a game to be romanced or have sex with though.

It was never overly big but the first game sold alright. It was one of the first exclusives of that generation.

Crackdown 2 was a flop though. God knows what's happening with 3. It's like 3 years late at this point. It should have been an early generation exclusive.

They might remain top down though.

They should follow the Majora's Mask strategy more often. Reuse some assets and the engine (maybe not quite to the degree as MM because that had to be rushed out before the N64 died) and make a sequel-like game to hold us over during the otherwise 5+ year gap between Zeldas.

I think they'll do a direct sequel to BOTW as well actually. Which they should do for sure. There's a lot more they can do with the formula.

Yep. People need to get off their high horse and not make people feel bad for liking games like this. Variety makes the industry better. Would you rather have had yet another open-world game?

The weird thing is this stigma doesn't seem to be there for Japanese narrative games like Ace Attorney and Danganronpa.

Uncharted 4 is the best selling in the series to date

Uncharted 4 was also bundled with every PS4 during their biggest holiday season.

Halo 5 had bundles as well.

And I'm not writing away Halo's sales because of bundle says. It's because you're misunderstanding the spin of Microsoft's PR.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2015/11/04/halo-5-guardians-biggest-halo-launch-in-history/

One week after launching worldwide, Halo 5: Guardians has made history as the biggest Halo launch and fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date, with more than $400 million in global sales of Halo 5: Guardians games and hardware, pushing the franchise to over $5 billion lifetime. With the highest week one attach rate for a Microsoft first party title on Xbox One, the game was the most played of any game on Xbox One, as well as the most played on Xbox Live.

Fans have logged more than 21 million hours of total gameplay, including 12 million hours in campaign mode alone. The widely praised multiplayer modes have also led to nine million total hours played with nearly seven million multiplayer matches played across Arena and the all-new Warzone mode. In addition, Halo fans are taking to the new Requisition System in a big way, with over 45 million REQ Packs acquired, totaling more than 568 million REQ Cards.

They're not only talking about game sales. They're including the game, the consoles, the controllers, any other Halo branded hardware/accessories and the microtransactions.

They don't say it's the fastest selling Halo game for a reason.

The sad thing is this doesn't even matter. Halo is selling fine. It's past its prime but it's fine. You keep bringing this up because it upsets you for some reason. Microsoft's problem is that they need more than a couple of franchises that peaked last generation

I don't know if I'd agree with them bringing PC style FPSes to consoles. When I think PC FPS I think 8-10 weapons at a very fast pace. Halo wasn't that.

That's not to say Halo didn't have a major impact on FPS design, plenty of games after that copied the "two weapons+dedicated grenade and melee buttons" scheme, but I feel like that was more them making a popular console control scheme and that being brought to PC instead of the other way. FPSes feel like they're finally starting to get back to Quake/UT speeds now that people are so comfortable with the standardized controller scheme.

That's a good point.

Maybe making console FPS's into their own thing would be a better way to put it.

The restrictions on data size of patches (not DLC. Come on, work on your reading comprehension skills) was entirely due to Microsoft stupidly making the hard drive not a standard so they could hawk the Core and Arcade versions of the 360, all so they could claim a smaller initial cost (but of cost it'd end up being more expensive in the long run). The restrictions went away as they phase out those models.

I wouldn't really say that was a stupid decision for the time. The Xbox had a built-in hard drive and that just kept the price up. They were keeping their options open so they could shift in either direction and adjust to the market accordingly.

Even with the hard drive accessory it was still quite a bit cheaper than the PS3.

It's way more common now but I appreciate all the EU stuff they tend to do with their big first party titles. I can't think of a game that had a prequel book like Halo CE did. I know Sonic and mascot characters had cheesy kids books but that was a proper lore thing and it was a good novel on its own. Hell they even did a Brute Force novel!

I think they popularized the common 'Limited Editions' as well. I remember Halo 2 being the first big one I remember. Around then they weren't that much more expensive (and they certainly weren't limited) and usually just had behind the scenes stuff or lore tidbits. They're all pretty crappy these days though.

I love Alan Wake's one. It came with a cool investigation book thing that tied into the game.

The same policy applied to third-parties. If they wanted to release free content, it'd be considered a "patch". After the first patch, the developers have to pay a substantial sum. Also, a patch couldn't exceed a certain size (and it was a very restrictive size) in order to fit on the memory card for Xbox 360s that didn't have a hard drive. This restriction didn't exist for paid DLC.

Ah fair enough.

I liked how the patches were small on the 360 but it was a different time back then.

I seem to recall Dead Rising and Crackdown had some sort of free DLC back in the day but I don't fully remember how that worked.

- Built-in hard drives
- Universal online account that works across all games
- Indie games
- DLC
- PC architecture that is easier to develop games on
- Custom soundtracks
- Crossplay between console and PC (now crossbuy)
- FPS games (that were more like what was on PC) being popular on consoles
- Now they're doing stuff like BC and emulation that carries over all of your old purchases with better visuals

People give Microsoft a lot of shit but they brought consoles forward 5-10 years compared to what Sony and Nintendo was doing. Even now the Xbox One does things that are forward thinking.

I can't think of another first party company who has done this badly with their games in a generation. It's not like they have another platform to support like Sony's piss poor support for the Vita.

For a major game publisher they're doing pretty bad.

The problem isn't even necessarily the games they're publishing. Those games all do their job and serve their niche fine for the most part. But there needs to be more of them.

Closing down studios like Lionhead has really bitten them in the ass.
