I dont think there is solely one problem or solution though. We could be examining multiple policies and laws to attempt to reduce gun violence, and I think we should because this shit is ever-changing and will always be complex in nature. Supporting stronger mental health services would be great for society overall, but who knows if it would be enough to make significant impacts over time on gun violence? Thats where evaluations come into play.

Anyway, go Chicago; I need to go into the Loop for work tomorrow so have a good night!

It does, and mental health especially. I could get treated for a stab wound without id if I walk into the er today, you can't get the same life saving treatment in this country if you're suicidal. It shouldn't be like that.

Hear, hear. So much stigma around treatment, lack of treatment centers in some areas, then the cost of getting services... I am insured and it costs me $130 per appointment to see my therapist. Its a legitimate public health concern for all of us, imo.

I just hesitate to take short-gap measures up like more armed security, because the ramifications could be costly in both the short and long term. Even if the payoffs of implementing stronger counseling services takes longer, the potential benefits could be felt longer for society. More imperative to invest in them sooner rather than later, yeah?

How much is a bunch?

You have to bear with me. I work and study in program evaluation, cost-benefit analysis...for me, policy proposals should be supported with some quantifiable measures if were seriously going to implement them. We all can have opinions but they may not hold up upon examination of their logistics.

Its also why the question well what would YOU do to solve it? is just as bone-headed as most answers to it >_> Like anyone can have THE perfect solution from the seat of their pants. Thats never how it works.

Worked for GAO and about to work for HHS. Zero armed guards when entering their buildings. There are security measures in place but they don't involve firearms.

I did go to the Kluczynski Federal Building today, and the security there was relatively stronger since I had to go through a metal detector and bag X-Ray. Didn't look to see if those guards had pistols on their sides but I assume they did based on their vests.

Put armed trained guards in schools. It's a right now stop gap. Every school. Actual guards. Metal detectors at the entrance. Kids won't try it if they figure out they can't make it 5 feet down the hall.

Those who wish to incite terror and violence choose targets based on ease of perpetuating an attack--strategic adaptation. Militarize schools, and they'll begin to target movie theaters more often. Then we'll have to militarize movie theaters, til they move on to more concerts. Then we'll have to militarize live venues. Et cetera.

Supporting evidence time:

Starting in the mid-1960s, hijacking became a serious problem in American civil aviation. Over 80 airplanes were taken by hijackers in 1969 alone. The hijackers included Americans, Croatians, Cubans, Japanese, North Koreans, Palestinians, and many others. Their motivations ranged from simple ransom to nationalist, leftist, and other global political causes.

In the early 1970s, in response to this growing assault on air safety, the United States and European countries increased airport security. Most importantly, metal detectors were installed in every major American airport by early 1973. Wed taken our first step on the road toward only using toiletries that come in three-ounce packages and not being able to wear socks with holes to the airport.

Did this heightened security work to increase public safety? In one sense, the answer is clearly yes. The upper cell of Figure 7.1 (which is a simplified replication of the analysis from Enders and Sandler (1993)) shows hijackings decreased fairly dramatically right after metal detectors were installed in 1973. But that is not the whole story. After metal detectors were installed, other kinds of terrorist hostage takings became more frequent, as shown in the lower cell of Figure 7.1. Indeed, Enders and Sandler show that during the course of the 1970s there is almost a one-for-one relationship between the decline in hijackings and the increase in other types of hostage-taking terrorist attacks.
