Detroit police say two people survived a shooting while attending a party early Saturday on the city's east side.

Police were called at 3:06 a.m. to a residence on the 6100 block of Domine Street where two people suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Upon arrival, they found a 35-year-old man who was shot multiple times and a 39-year-old female who was shot in the foot. Both were taken to a hospital and the woman was listed in stable condition.

Police said the victims were attending a party and were standing outside of the residence when the suspect started shooting and fled on foot.

Police are looking for a 35-year-old armed suspect wearing a red hat, red sweatshirt, blue pants, about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Awful. I've helped with the training of police officers in active school shooting scenarios, too. I played the role of the "school shooter". Training and the real deal are two totally different beasts. However, he had a job to protect those kids and he failed. For that, he should be ashamed of himself.

I would never expect a lone police officer with a service pistol to rush into an active shooter situation and face down a guy wielding an AR-15. That's ludicrous. Especially if he doesn't know where in the building this guy is.

Plenty of unarmed civilians did just that and most of them saved lives

The home of the former school resource deputy who stayed outside the Florida high school as last weeks massacre unfolded was being protected Friday by law enforcement officials even as President Trump called out the ex-cop, suggesting he was a "coward."

Deputy Scot Peterson was armed and stationed on campus when Nikolas Cruz opened fire.

Reporters who attempted to approach the West Palm Beach home of ex-Broward County Sheriff's Office Deputy Scot Peterson were reportedly met with resistance from at least six police officers who were standing guard outside. Peterson's family requested privacy and protection following Peterson's resignation.

Before departing for his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday morning, Trump, in a set of fiery remarks, lambasted Peterson. "When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn't have the courage, or something happened," Trump said. "He certainly did a poor job. That's the case where somebody was outside, they are trained, they didn't react properly under pressure or they were a coward."

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Peterson, who was armed when gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, never went in[to] the building that was under attack. He said the school resource officer instead took up a position viewing the western entrance of the building.

Israel said he was devastated, sick to my stomach after learning of Petersons inaction during the school shooting that left 17 people dead. The sheriff said he believes Peterson remained outside the building for roughly four minutes, while the shooting in total lasted around six minutes. Israel said the officer never fired his weapon.

"What matters is that when we, in law enforcement, arrive at an active shooter, we go in and address he target," the sheriff said. "And thats what shouldve been done." When asked what Peterson should have done, Israel said the deputy should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer. There are no words. I mean, these families lost their children...I've been to the funerals...I've been to the vigils. It's just, ah, there are no words."

Peterson resigned Thursday after video surveillance showed he never entered the school, even though he clearly knew there was a shooting taking place, officials said.

Officer Tim Burton of the Coral Springs Police Department, who responded to the shooting, told the New York Times that Peterson was seeking cover behind a concrete column leading to a stairwell.

Student Jenna Jorsten said she was in shock Peterson stayed outside especially after learning of unarmed teachers and students risking their lives to save others.

If hes the one with a gun, he should be the one out there with the gun trying to protect the kids, she said. Why was he hiding outside? It just makes no sense to me whatsoever. I mean it just doesnt make sense to me at all.

Cruz, 19, has been jailed on 17 counts of murder and police said he confessed to being the shooter. efense attorneys, state records and people who knew him indicate Cruz displayed behavioral troubles for years.

Two other deputies Edward Eason and Guntis Treijis. from the Broward County Sheriff's Office have been placed on restrictive duty as officials investigate "whether or not they could have done more, shouldve done more."

Their restricted assignments come as authorities found they responded to at least 23 calls regarding Cruz or his brother since 2008. In two of the instances protocol might not have been followed.

Israel said an investigation remains ongoing.

A Wisconsin fourth grade school teacher removed Christian symbolism from her classroom after an atheist parent complained.

Among the items that were taken down at Roosevelt Elementary School a cross, a poster listing virtues and vices and a poster that read, In God We Trust and a picture frame that included the American flag and the words God Bless America.

Television station WTMJ reports that parent Rob Moore was infuriated and fuming over the classroom decorations.

Moore is president of a Freedom From Religion Foundation chapter a notorious group of atheists, agnostics and freethinkers. They are determined to eradicate Christianity from the public market place.

There is an undeniable Christian theme in (the) classroom decorations and instruction, Freedom From Religion Foundation attorney Ryan Jayne wrote in a letter to the school district.

Jayne said the religious-themed decorations violated the U.S. Constitution.

Religious classroom decorations violate this basic constitutional prohibition by creating the appearance that the District prefers religion over non religion, and Christianity over all other faiths, the attorney wrote.

The atheists also took issue because there was a Childs Christian Bible in the school library but no other religious texts.

Religion is a divisive force in public schools, the attorney wrote.

The Kenosha Unified School District did not confirm whether the teacher removed the bible. They issued a statement saying the matter was under investigation.

A U.S. sailor was in critical condition Friday after being hit by a helicopter rotor blade at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base, military officials said.

The unidentified sailor was struck by the spinning UH-1Y Venom helicopter tail rotor blade about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Military officials declined to release further details, saying the incident was still under investigation.

The sailor was assigned to 34d Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, located north of San Diego.

An 88-year-old British military veteran tapped into his decades-old training to reportedly save a young woman from five knife-wielding thugs.

John Nixon, who fought in the Korean War, said he stepped in when he noticed five youths grab a womans handbag and clothes while walking down Raglan Street, in Kenthish Town, last month.

Nixon said his military training kicked in and he fought back at one of the suspected thieves, slugging one in the neck.

I disabled one but another pulled out a knife so I had to try and deal with him too, he continued. I tried to disarm him and in the process I got stab wounds here, there and everywhere. There was a lot of blood. He wasnt trained and it was more of a pocket knife. Luckily my wounds were shallow.

The robbers fled and Nixon was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police officers applauded Nixon for the Jan. 27 attack, commending him for his extraordinary bravery.

Nixon said he trained as a special forces solider, or commando, in the British military at a training camp at Achnacarry Castle in the Western Highlands of Scotland.

He said he was sent on intelligence missions to Egypt, the Middle East and Germany. After leaving the military, he served as a bodyguard to Doctors Without Borders in Nigeria.

Nixon said all he wanted to do was help the woman being attacked.

Ive been shot in the leg and even bitten by a snake, the venom lay dormant in my spine for years, he said. Ive been near death so many times that situation just doesnt worry me. The woman ran off screaming, but I hope she is okay.

He added: "Fear is not in my vocabulary."

Police said no arrests have been made.

A chicago woman has revealed a letter Albert Einstein sent her father, thanking him for his efforts to rescue Jews from Nazi Germany. Enid Bronstein told Chicagos WGN TV that Einstein sent the missive to her father David Finck in June 1939, before the start of World War II, as many Jews tried to flee Hitlers regime.

Finck, a New York financier, helped fund the emmigration of several such refugees. May I offer my sincere congratulations to you on the splendid work you have undertaken on behalf of the refugees, Einstein said in the letter.

The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness, he wrote. We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause.

He added: It must be a source of deep gratification to you to be making so important a contribution toward rescuing our persecuted fellow Jews from their calamitous peril and leading them toward a better future.

WGN TV said the German-born physicist is known to have penned several such letters in 1939. Bronsteins is the third to surface. Bronstein said she had kept the letter locked away in a safety deposit box for the past 50 years.

I wanted to keep the letter to show it to my children and grandchildren so that they would get the message that every contribution, no matter how small, is important, she said.

She has now said she will donate the item to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.

A leading member of the U.S. Marines has warned that the eruption of a war is likely imminent. Gen. Robert Neller, the commandant of the Marine Corps, made the comments during a visit to a contingent of 300 U.S. Marines deployed in Norway, according to Military.com.

"I hope I'm wrong, but there's a war coming," Neller stated in remarks to the troops, reported Military.com. "You're in a fight here, an informational fight, a political fight, by your presence."

The Marines were deployed to Norway to improve their experience in cold weather operations. Norway has a 120-mile border with Russia, which is seen as a U.S. rival.

Sgt. Major Ronald Green of the Marine Corps backed up Neller's remarks and stressed that the U.S. could take rapid action. "Just remember why you're here," said Green. "They're watching. Just like you watch them, they watch you. We've got 300 marines up here; we could go from 300 to 3,000 overnight. We could raise the bar."

Military.com reported in May that soldiers had been instructed not to refer to Russia by name in interviews with the media so as to avoid raising tensions. The comments followed the release Dec. 18 of the Trump administration's National Security Strategy. The document identified Russia as posing a threat to the United States.

"With its invasions of Georgia and Ukraine, Russia demonstrates its willingness to violate the sovereignty of states in the region," it was stated in the document. The strategy pointed to Russia and China as countries which "challenge American power, influence and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity," according to USA Today.

In a speech accompanying the release of the document, President Donald Trump referred to the two countries as "rival powers." Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the strategy by accusing the United States of aggression.

"The U.S. has recently unveiled its new defense strategy," Putin said. "Speaking the diplomatic language, it is obviously offensive, and if we switch to the military language, it is certainly aggressive."

Putin took issue with the creation of "offensive infrastructures" in Europe, and argued that the U.S. has violated the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Specifically, Putin noted an American missile base in Romania which he alleged was capable of housing ground-to-ground mid-range cruise missiles.

"Russia has a sovereign right and all possibilities to adequately and in due time react to such potential threats," added Putin.

The Russian president then suggested it would be necessary for Russia to further develop its nuclear forces. He noted that Moscow's current nuclear arsenal offers reliable strategic deterrence.
