Ratchet and Clank (PS2)

Never liked Ratchet. I dunno why. I think it's because he looks like an action figure. But decided to play this anyway. The game's better than I thought but I still don't love it. It's a platformer but there's more shooting than platforming. Which is fine I guess. Sometimes I really like the game, other times it's ugh. Also the checkpointing is cruel. But it's a neat game, with great graphics for the PS2 and I like the artstyle.

This year was year of platformers for me. I beat Sly1, Ratchet1, Jak1, Croc1&2, Crash3, Mario 64 and Spyro1 and Kao2. Fug. Never had any of these growing up except Croc 1 so this was like making up for that. Sly is my favorite.

Sly > Spyro > Mario 64 > Croc > Jak > Ratchet > Croc 2 > Kao2 > Crash 3

I think that's all from me this year. Gonna take a break

Might want to try later installments anyway. Some of the recent ones play really fluidly, and are definitely more forgiving than R&C1. Either Tools of Destruction, A Crack in Time or the Ratchet and Clank Reboot for PS4 would be good options. Especially ACiT is great!

Oh damn that one is hard, there are quite a lot:

Pokemon Gold/Silver
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
Pokemon X/Y
Diablo 3
Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I think these are the biggest ones. They all lived up to it, even though none of them are my favorite games in the series (to be fair, though, with Pokemon I really don't know what my favorite one is, they're all fun). My luck with Diablo 3 is that I didn't have a chance to play it before the patched edition including Reaper of Souls came out for PS3, and it was a much better game after that from what I believe.

All in all, most of the hype came when I was a child and highly enthusiastic about new games. I didn't look at as games as formulaically as I do now. Of course, so many games these days and so much more experience that it's hard not to. Especially with open world games I tend to feel everything has the same game structure with a different narrative around it, whereas before that would be something magical!

Kingdom Hearts HD Final Mix (PS4)

I bought the 1.5 + 2.5 Remix deal when it was on sale, and now beat the first Kingdom Hearts. I had never played it before now (well, 10 minutes over at a friend's on his PS2 a long time ago), but I have to say it was a mixed bag for me. The story is pretty cool, and holy cow does it change tone at the end. There is a certain charm to it too, and the Disney-inclusions are nice. I also personally loved the music.

However, I'm not so enamoured by the gameplay. It gets very spammy and repetitive, there is an enormous respawn rate, controls felt tanky, camera is tanky, some platforming sections are just cringeworthy because of those things, and the seemingly endless amount of bosses in the End of the World was just getting annoying. I didn't particularly love the level design either: even if it's a fairly old game, everything feels rather basic and simplistic, yet managed to have confusing progression now and then.

At one point did I start actually loving the game, and it's when I got overpowered and mowed down the endless groups of enemies quickly. It wasn't ever truly hard or anything, but mostly very slow before that happened. I personally thought Hollow Bastion was awesome, much more fun and intricate than the other worlds. Sometimes, the loot you find can be really rewarding as well, that was nicely spaced out I think.

Overall, I did have fun, but too many times that momentum was broken by something less enjoyable. However, I'm definitely going to play another one at some point. It's only the first game in the series after all! :)

Super Mario Odyssey

Certainly haven't completed it yet, but I beat the story and got a lot of moons (not 500 yet though). I'm definitely going to keep playing the post-game. It's a great game to just pick up and play for 30 minutes and still make some nice progress.

Overall another amazing Mario game. So much to do and discover. However, I don't think it's enormously better than the Galaxies. It's more like just as good, but the Galaxy games were amazing anyway so that's not a bad comparison.

Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS).

Awesome game all in all. Some of the later boss fights are epic. Seems like a strong remake and definitely a more traditional Metroid game after Other M, but in a way it did play it a little safe. Pacing isn't perfect I feel, but whatever. I got all the upgrades as well, so aside from Hard Mode there isn't much left to do. The fact that this even exists, along with the announcement of Metroid Prime 4, is enough for me to not care about little things. :)

Oh no! That's awful, so sorry to hear that. My mother died last year as well, after she was diagnosed with cancer the year before. It sucks, it's hard and can't be compared to anything else in life. I wish you a lot of strength for the coming period! It seems like you have a strong father to find support in at the very least.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice

Finally committed to delving into the final case, I have a tendency to play these games in segments, and I put a large part of this case off for a little while, but I got through it now, and it was a fantastic case imo. Overall a very good AA entry, there a couple of things I found disappointing (prosecutor, case 4's random inclusion, and the increasingly extreme silliness and far-fetched character puns), but in general it was a tightly written game. I think it was more polished than Dual Destinies, and it was very refreshing to read virtually no typo's this time contrary to DD which almost seemed amateurish in that regard. Very solid cases all around, and I think the final case is one of the better ones in the series.

Still have to play Turnabout Time Traveller though!

Not sure if I posted this already, but I recently beat Final Fantasy XV (PS4).

I don't know what it was, but for a gravely imperfect game I really enjoyed it overall. I guess it's a game where it feels like it's more than the sum of its parts, despite the fact that it had relatively unspecial characters, a weirdly and sometimes illogically presented story, fairly simplistic combat, fairly simplistic/lazy sidequests, lots of tedium in getting around (load screens), certain recurring enemies when you don't want them...

Maybe it's just the world. The way the fantasy and modern technology that we have in the real world blend together. Or the relatable group of friends.
