What's the game?

It's a fighting game called Dammerung. My concept is, "What if there were a really fun fighting game, but the story didn't suck?" (Injustice 2 and MKX had pretty decent stories but I want it to be something fantastic.)

The setting is a civil war between a realm-ruling theocracy (the Exalted) and a rebel alliance between a populist faction (the Renaissance) and a technocratic faction (the Vault). At first, you see things from the rebels' point of view, and it feels like typical "Row, row, fight the powah" stuff.

Then you see it from the Exalted's point of view, and you realize... hey, these people aren't really evil. And life here in Dammerung isn't actually that bad for most people. And come to think of it, part of the rebels' philosophy is kinda BS...

I have three goals for the audience:

1. Enjoy the characters as well-rounded people with real, solid development.
2. Question who the "hero" of this kind of story is, or if one even exists.
3. Subvert the typical tale of a revolution by showing all the problems it can leave in its wake.

Day 1: Revised character profiles for half the current characters. They needed a lot of updates in lore and gameplay concept. Also decided some characters to axe for the playable roster, though they'll still show up in the story and thus get minor writeups at the end of the profiles.

I think the comparison between games is a little unfair. Undertale was a full-fledged game to which Toby dedicated years. Meanwhile, DDLC feels more like a "proof-of-concept" project for Dan Salvato as he prepares for bigger and better things -- especially since the hidden file easter eggs seem to indicate said bigger and better thing will have a lot more information come out next year.

Edit: Regarding the characters, I thought it was actually cool to see them try to resist Monika's meddling. Natsuki's letter for the player to help Yuri is a prime example; Monika obviously didn't think Natsuki would figure out a bit of what was going on and had to assume direct control right after.

Kind of throws dirt at Monika's assertion that all the other girls were fake, and while they obviously weren't as self aware as Monika, they definitely still had their own identities.

Honestly, I think this was an idea that they wanted to do, but couldn't make it not broken, but decided to keep it in the set anyways. That makes for a funny card, but... the vitriol is something else.

also i kinda want to jam it in a barnes/ysharraj deck.

In the interest of "no bulli the Sayori," she committed suicide because Monika ramped her depression into overdrive. It's even suggested in Sayori's last "poem" that she put the idea in Sayori's head through speech instead of scripting.

This is for the game idea I've kicked in my head for years, but now apparently a friend of mine who is a voice actor flew a couple of my ideas by a contact he has at Red Hook, and said contact seemed pumped. Even mentioned it in a follow-up a couple weeks later. Obviously the game wouldn't be picked up by Red Hook but now I have a person (VA dude) who knows people that know people. And he's stoked about this, and in my experience, he's not the kind of guy who fucks around.

So I need to fucking write.

I'm embarrassed to post this because I know I'm going to fail, and I know the board thinks I'm an annoying prick, but I have to have some kind of public record to hold myself accountable, so here we go.

Foolo, in regard to the last point, perhaps your interpretation is similar to mine but I'm not realizing it?
To me, everything Monika was doing, she was doing out of desperation. I don't think she's "in love" with the player or trying to maintain control -- I think she's trying to find some way, any way out of the prison she's in, and the player is the only "hole in the wall" that she can see.

I'm not very smart, or I'd be more poignant... sorry.

The problem with that Monika build, though I do like it, is that it is SO reliant on spoilers for DDLC that anyone who sees that merc will be spoiled on the game whether they realize it or not. It would have to be reworded somehow, or maybe not care since the next mercs game is so far away that no one will care about spoilers then. I've done the same with some PSes whose abilities are tied into spoilers but are written in a way that you wouldn't know unless you've played their games.

Yeah, it's hard with DDLC being so spoiler-laden.

2. Lloyd (7) in Cog of Destiny. There's a big emotional impact from fighting him and he's definitely one of the harder bosses in a generally easy game.

Lloyd was friggin awesome. Both the Black Fang brothers were just excellent. God I love FE7.
