Star Wars is whacky space fun but it's entirely based on western human understandings and sentiments which is why Luke Skywalker is the main character and not Chewbacca or some other alien and, IMO you can disagree if you want, the idea that the person we are supposed to place our trust of survival in is someone who goes around colouring their hair purple and walking around like they were just at a new years party is very off-putting. Especially because all the previous leaders of the rebellion have been dressed like military personnel or diplomats. Holdo's appearance reminds me mostly of Amidala in Episode 1 whose over the top fashion sense was meant, I suspect, symbolizes immaturity and naivete. Why does she seem any more out of place than Mon Mothma? --- |

Many people on CE who shout "innocent until proven guilty" don't socially apply that same standard to how they would treat someone e.g. on trial for murder. Secondly, especially in some of these sexual assault cases, people ignore the middle ground, where the accused and the accuser both accurately give their accounts of a situation, but from one person's perspective a crime has been committed, and from the other's it hasn't. --- |

I completely agree with this. It sort of reminds me about when people complained about how overpowered snaking was in Mario Kart for the DS. The people in favor of it had the attitude of "git gud scrub", but the main issue with it was that when you played someone through the online game, it didn't actually show the flames coming out of their car, so most people who played the game had no idea WHY they were being beaten. They just saw someone inexplicably driving faster than them. Likewise, in that clip they were showing of someone online essentially 100-0ing someone, I'm not sure how that person could identify what they were doing wrong. In my own experience, it seems like the barrier for people I know playing fighting games is that it's easier to learn how to shoot a fireball than it is to appropriately defend against a fireball (replace fireball with any other similar tactic). --- |

The author of the original article states that she didn't realize just how uncomfortable she was until after she was gone. It feels weird to me that we're supposed to be expecting Aziz to be more perceptive of her feelings than she was of them. 2. There's a certain emotional conflation here by the author where she lets her view of what she wanted the relationship to be versus what Aziz wanted and let that influence whether she felt assaulted or not. He has basically no power over her, physically, professionally, etc. While she has invested some emotion into the relationship, it's a reluctance to abandon her image of what the relationship can be that keeps her there, using non-verbal cues instead of just flatly saying no. This is essentially the conservative boogeyman #metoo article that I was hoping would never be written. --- |
