Man, Citrus is kind of bothering me.

At a conceptual level this is a really good romance story, but they just can't let an episode end without the weekly dose of sexual assault can they?

I mean I'm still going to keep watching it because I can just sort of mentally filter out those scenes, but that's still only partially effective.

Most Disappointing
+5 Masamune-kun's Revenge
+3 Land of the Lustrous
+1 March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2

It's important to mention this is "most disappointing" and not necessarily worst shows. That means that instead of going to shows that are just straight-up bad, I'm more likely to select shows that have high potential but then don't follow through with it for one reason or another. In that light and given previous comments I've made on Land of the Lustrous, it probably makes sense why I selected that one. March Comes in Like a Lion maybe shouldn't be on here, but I really didn't like the first couple episodes especially compared to how much I liked the first half of season 1. The Masamune choice is probably straightforward and I'd prefer not to risk recovering any repressed memories by talking about it.

Oh and I also realized I never listed my votes for best drama/action.

Best Drama/Action

I don't think the fact that Kazuma is a jerk (which is true) has anything to do with whether or not I view Aqua as sympathetic.

I basically don't think anyone in Konosuba is sympathetic, and I'd even argue that itself is what most the humor in the show is based off of.

Good winners. Ended up going with My Hero Academia, but those two were pretty much neck-and-neck for my first place vote. Both had really strong casts. The thing about My Hero Academia's cast though is that it's pretty huge, and even despite that there's a only a very small number of misses. And all of those characters have really fun and quirky (get it?) personalities, and their interactions with each other are great also.

Ancient Magus' Bride was my +1 for the record, though it was a distant 3rd place.

Yeah here were my votes

+5 Tomoyo Kurosawa (Phos - Land of the Lustrous)
+3 Hitomi Nabatame (Akane Kosaka - Saekano Season 2)
+1 Shiori Izawa (Nanachi - Made in Abyss)

Regardless of anything else I have to say about LotL I do think the VA for Phos did an excellent job with what had to be a pretty wide range of styles. I'm not surprised at all that nobody else voted for this random Saekano side character that appears for like 1 episode, but man I'll be damned if the VA didn't knock one out of the park whenever her character was on-screen. Nanachi just sounds adorable and I'm kind of sad she didn't win anything, though with the way this category worked out I'm not too surprised there either.

I think you and I had the same issues with season one.

I think this is true, but I will say two things:

--I like season 2, but I think it's good for different reasons than the good parts of season 1 were. So I'm not sure how reliably the statement I quoted could be used to infer what your opinion on season 2 would be.

--Even though I'm enjoying season 2 right now, there was a significant stretch of episodes at the start of the season for which I was not enjoying it, and was even enjoying it less than the worse parts of season 1. I was actually really close to dropping the show myself.

My votes

Best Couple
+5 Chito and Yuuri (Girls' Last Tour)
+3 Rei Kiriyama and Hinata Kawamoto (March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2)
+1 Chise Hatori and Elias Ainsworth (The Ancient Magus' Bride)

In stories based on two people going on a journey, the quality of the story really depends on the strength of the relationship between those people, and I thought Girls' Last tour nailed that. They have different philosophies, but you can still tell they really care for and depend on each other. Also I like their pseudo-philosophical discussions a lot.

I'm kind of upset but not surprised to see Rei/Hina absent from the list. They got some absurdly good development in the most recent season though, which has probably played the largest role in saving the show from disaster at the present time. Elias/Chise pretty good also.

Araragi/Senjougahara and Kobayashi/Tohru both completely solid picks also, but there was some strong competition in this category.

And yeah I don't think there's many anime out there that are going to match the style/creativity in a Yuasa work no matter who is producing what. (Though I do agree based on what I've heard Netflix had a major role in this specific anime being made)

[Land of the Lustrous] she deliberately destroys her arms for strength.

I will mention that this is not how I interpret this scene. And if they actually had taken this route and sold me on it, I would have liked it noticeably more. But I mean:

1. The only reason she's in that situation in the the first place is because she's hearing voices from the ice. I know those voices are supposed to reflect her own thoughts or whatever, but to me that's not as significant a statement as the writers would like to believe. I'm not interested in what hidden desires are whispering in the corner of a character's mind--I'm interested in what decisions are made by a complex being as a result of weighing many different such desires. The way this particular event played out to me felt like it was pushing Phos in one direction in a way that felt inorganic.

2. When she gets up to the hole in the ice, she even decides not to do it, but then she slips and it happens anyway.

My votes on OP/ED were mostly based on song for the record.

My biggest problem with Phos is that all of the development that had been teased since the beginning of the series doesn't actually happen until what is basically a teaser for season 2 in the final episode. And then meanwhile we get all this other stuff which was...fine I guess? I would probably like it more if I was ever able to successfully shake the idea that it might be reliant on this (LotL) gimmicky memory loss mechanic.

Yeah male characters from this year were awful. I think it's telling that my 5th favorite character from Re:Creators, a single series, managed to be my 2nd favorite new male character across all 2017 anime. Also I count no less than 8 female characters who are better than everyone on my males list, and that's only counting the ones that are so obviously better that I don't even have to think about it.

Best Male Character:
+5 Elias Ainsworth (The Ancient Magus' Bride)
+3 Takashi Matsubara (Re:Creators)
+1 Tasuku Uehara (Gamers!)

Elias is the only one here I might call a standout, though even in his case he's the weaker half of the main duo. I do rather like Matsubara in Re:Creators and how he develops into a sort of father figure for his creation, but again he's certainly not the highlight of the show. And then there's the random Gamers character that was pretty funny because who else am I supposed to pick.

Best Female Character
+5 Mamika Kirameki (Re:Creators)
+3 Nanachi (Made in Abyss)
+1 Magane Chikujouin (Re:Creators)

There's a lot of snubs here but this is who I ended up going with. Characters who steadfastly hold to "naive" idealism/optimism are usually among my favorite characters and Mamika is a great example of this. Really loved her conversations with Alice, and also the confrontation between Mamika and Altair is one of the highlights of the show imo. Also on a different note Magane is a really entertaining mischief maker is which can be a really vital role in these battle royale type settings. Nanachi is great in everything she does.

My votes

Best Story
+5 Made in Abyss
+3 Land of the Lustrous
+1 Re:Creators

I didn't like Made in Abyss quite as much as most did, but I do think story is its strongest point, especially in the latter half. Once it became clear the story was going to be about the Abyss itself and the people trying to get to the bottom (as opposed to the society at the top of the Abyss) I think it became really interesting. Also the stuff with Nanachi is really good. Land of the Lustrous I had some issues with--most notably the fact that it's noticeably unfinished--but the story we got was really intriguing. Re:Creators I already talked about a lot in the anime topic but yeah it was good.

Best OP/ED
+5 Kirameku Hamabe (Land of the Lustrous ED)
+3 Ugoku, Ugoku (Girls' Last Tour OP)
+1 Deep in Abyss (Made in Abyss OP)

Yeah. Only one I really felt like was top tier was Kirameku Hamabe, which I love everything about. Ugoku, Ugoku was solid but not amazing, and Deep in Abyss was pretty much a filler pick. Overall a very weak year for OP's/ED's at least from the stuff I saw anyway.
