Hello Zachary. :)

Yeah I'm going broke from all these Switch games. I've never once played Skyrim or L.A. Noire but now feels like a good time to get for the only system I seem to play anymore. I'm also interested in DOOM and Wolfenstein 2. All come out before the end of the year. I already have Oddesey, BoW, Mario v Rabbits, Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Binding of Isaac, Steam World Dig, Golf Story, Jackbox Party, and Stardew Valley. Probably the biggest library I've had for a home system since my GameCube tbh. I haven't really played games like this since high school.

Can't decide if I want to order a pizza and eat myself into a coma or not eat for the rest of the week.

Just remember that it can take a couple of weeks before it starts to work. Meanwhile do anything you can to keep yourself busy. Spend time with family and friends even if you don't feel like it. Whatever you do, don't stop taking your medication once it has started working just because you feel better. Talk to your doctor first. You'll be okay :)

That sounds horrible. Worst thing I ever experienced was a drug induced psychosis. It was basically like a panic attack with delusions/hallucinations. I just remember feeling like I was going insane. I remember it initially felt like the onset of a panic attack. I had that feeling of dread and it felt like everything was closing in on me. I decided to start counting slowly until I felt better. Then everything went horribly wrong. Instead of starting my counting at "1" my brain skipped directly to the number "7." The number 7 became the only thing my mind could think of. Every time I closed my eyes, it's all I could see. I felt like I needed to throw up. I was sweating excessively and started pacing back and forth. I remember feeling like I was losing my mind and that it was going to be permanent. In reality it probably only lasted about 5 to 10 minutes. Not fun.

You going to go see a doctor about it? Or do you find it's not really interfering with things for you?

I don't think it's serious enough to warrant medication. I think I just need to set limits and rules for myself... Well idk. Like trying to explain exactly what is wrong is difficult for me. I just can't seem to find the words that explain the problem exactly how I want. I almost gave up writing this post like 3 different times.

I've noticed that social media and it's bite-size presented material is something that I lose myself in. I scroll through instagram and will keep scrolling for long periods of time which initially makes it seem like I don't have a problem with staying focused on something. In reality, I think it's because it's such a constant stream of bite size pieces of information that it plays right into the fact that I can't focus on one thing for too long. I can't start movies on Netflix because I just end up looking through what is available until I just give up on it all. I barely play games anymore because as soon as I start one, I'll decide I don't want to play anymore. I feel like I speak too fast sometimes because my words can't keep up with my mind. I used to think I just had anxiety but I feel like it might just be related to add because my mind is always racing.

Oh hey that whole last paragraph pretty much came as one stream of thought. Lol

But of course there is always a choice involved. Addiction being a disease doesn't absolve responsibility from the addict to do something about it. Just like diabetics are responsible for changing their diet/lifestyle, addicts need to make changes in their life that help them to stay sober. In programs, they work on developing more reliable support systems, coping and relapse prevention skills.

The people saying that it goes down have never been a drug addict. I have been. It never goes down. You get ruined for life. It feels like it goes down because the first time after a long break feels amazing but yeah.

Even as a previous drug user I can tell you that drug tolerance goes down. Your brain has the ability to bounce back after long stretches of drug use. Obviously, the longer you use affects how long it takes you to bounce back but it does happen. Though your tolerance can return to the level that it was at much faster than it previously did if you start using again. To suggest that your tolerance can't go back down at any point again is simply untrue. lol

Yes it goes down. It's partly the reason why those who are drug addicts accidentally OD after a long period of abstinence. They use at their previous level and their bodies can't handle the same amount as it previously could.

They're a brilliant lot, honestly.

Sarcasm against people with a disease. If you ever question why you have poor occurrences in your life, look back on how you think of others.

he says, completely serious, as if drug addicts were forced to become addicted through no fault of their own

Drug addiction IS a disease. I work with drug addicts. A lot of them are good people that were in unfortunate circumstances or who made some poor decisions. Depending on your genetic and environmental influences, you may be more at risk for addiction.

Small pox is a disease. Cancer is a disease. Drug addiction is a symptom of either mental illness (which is a genetic defect, not a disease - I hate it when hippies mislabel it) or poor life choices (well, and stupidity, I guess. I've seen documentaries where people just took a "why not try it?" approach for no reason). As somebody with bipolar 1, which can often lead to substance abuse, I can say with certainty that "there is a choice" and some people are simply weak of character and take the bad path and use lots of excuses. That lack of conviction is why addicts to tend to replace their vice with Jesus when they get clean; it's simply trading one obsessive distraction for another.

The disease model of addiction is currently widely accepted in the medical field.

Disease: a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment.

It doesn't take much to see how addiction falls under this definition. The brain is the organ that is incorrectly functioning. There have been studies that show addiction has a genetic basis. One's genetics may put someone at a higher risk for developing an addiction just like someone may be more at risk for developing diabetes if it runs in their family. Obviously environmental factors have a role to play in drug addiction as well. Drugs would be the toxins that affect the brain in such a way that hijacks our ability to make clear decisions. By repeatedly ingesting these substances, it has a long lasting effect on neurotransmitter pathways essentially affecting our pleasure/reward systems. At a certain point it can affect your ability to decide between things such as either going to your kids baseball game or shooting up some heroin in a back alley.

damn didn't know it was considered a quick/easy read, now I feel sorta bad about getting my grandmother to read that one stephen king book for me and just summarizing it back to me so I could write a book report. (actually surprised she did that for me as she was a follow the rules type of person. but she really loved reading)

I forget which book it was, but it was just as big as some harry potter books as to why I was put off on actually reading it.

Each of the Harry potter books can be read in basically less than a week. Stephen King's books are mostly longer than those.

never been big on reading books. i'm still mad at myself for reading this one book that was a 3 parter, really liked it, but its been so long since i've read it i'd feel the need to start all over again instead of jumping to book 2. and each book averaged about 800-1000 pages.

edit: i'm also still super pissed at myself for turning down a AP class in highschool because it wanted us to read 3 books over the summer and do book reports. I said fuck that I don't care for reading, then turned around and read 3 books that summer.

I feel you. Sometimes I get sidetracked when reading a long book and then just feel the need to start it all over by the time I get back to it. It's getting to that point with my current book rn. Clive Barber's Imajica.
