Google 'X the Y', where X is any random English name and Y is any random kind of animal.

Hell, try substituting 'Hedgehog' for Y as the best and quickest way to check.

Watch the insanity unfold on your screen. You will now know the truth, and also know that it's way too late to scrub out the images and words that just burned themselves into your retina.

If you don't use that, in principle you still would have to pick characters depending on the theme of the mission you're undertaking to maximize approval gain and minimize loss.

yeah that's what i'm saying is i never had to do that, even without the DLC. but i don't think i really bothered with maxing the approval of anyone i didn't consistently take in my party on that first playthrough.

Well, that explains it, if you're not interested in the high approval stat bonuses there was no real reason to raise your companions' approval high as long as they were comfortably in the positive range, enough so that you could trigger their personal sidequests or start romance subplots.

Completely different situation to DA2 where 'non-perfect' approval caused them to defect to the enemy in the final mission.

As for quest micromanaging, well, you needed some degree of that in Origins and Awakening too, anyway. The prime difference would be that Origins and Awakening supplied you with enough personal gifts to keep everyone happy in the end, while you weren't offered that luxury in DA2, so you had to be a bit more careful. However, maxing either Friendship or Rivalry permanently locked you into 100% approval, a perk absent in DA: O

i never needed to micromanage my party for quests in any of my playthroughs in Origins. i always took who i wanted to have from a combat perspective every time, which for the most part consisted of Wynne, Alistair and Leliana. the Feastday Gifts/Pranks DLC made being able to max out approval and keeping it maxed trivial, and it was even really that hard before that DLC.

Yeah, well, you had that. That DLC's an automatic 'you win' button regarding approval.

If you don't use that, in principle you still would have to pick characters depending on the theme of the mission you're undertaking to maximize approval gain and minimize loss. It's just that, the numerous gifts you get, personal and general, even without the DLC mostly trivializes this so that most of the time you don't genuinely 'need' careful team management unless you're one of those 'must max everything!!!' types, while the extremely limited nature regarding gifts(and characters reacting to every single little thing) made this a more tricky endeavor in the sequel.

Basically, Im terrible at the Roleplaying aspect of RPGs and just tell people whatever response I know is going to get the outcome with the most cash, EXP, or trophies. Upon reflecting on that, I realized it basically made my Warden a racist hedonistic douchebag who had sexually harassed his entire team by the end of the game.

So true. It's a huge failing of the games that the approval system is basically you saying what they want to hear. You end up sounding like a milquetoast with no backbone around your party members. At least in Inquisition, you're going to do things that irritate your party members on occasion.

DA2 was better in theory with how you could be friends or rivals, but with that system, you ended up doing a bunch of micromanaging who to bring on quests, so I'm not if it ended up actually being any better or not.

It was an interesting idea, but poorly executed. It didn't discern between whether you were acting against the character's wishes/goals with rational reasons of your own, or were simply being an asshole towards the person in question just for the hell of it.

The result was, you could mistreat, abuse and insult any of your companions as much as you wanted, and that somehow won their undying loyalty. Making every one of them have the potential to be a sick masochist or a Stockholm Syndrome patient or whatever. It was ridiculous.

DA2 needed a dual approval meter. One being the Friendship/Rivalry thing the end product had, the other being the standard -100~+100 one in Origins, with bonuses from the former only activating if you achieved above a certain level in the latter, and crisis points with companions abandoning you if the latter fell too much.

However, maxing either Friendship or Rivalry permanently locked you into 100% approval, a perk absent in DA: O, so it's not like DA2 was way harder to maintain max approval than its predecessor.

At least it's not as bad as it could be, eh.

Imagine if there was an escort mission in this, you were playing a mage and the objective was weaker than tissue paper. You'd be accidentally killing him with Fireball, Walking Bomb, Stinging Swarm, etc. all the time... *shudders*

And that's before going into the really useful AoE spells like Inferno or Blizzard where it's always nice to have one over the entire battlefield in most cases so you'd cast them by habit if you have them... *shudders*

Anyways, as long as its not Dalish Elf, all of the Origins are golden.

Mage is pretty meh too, if you ask me.

No compelling reason to join the Wardens at all(massacred family / banished from home / about to be executed(x2) / dying from a weird magic taint). Just 'hey guy/girl, you're a honor student, so we're giving you this rare opportunity to escape this ****ty tower and live like a proper person for once'.

At least, while the reason for joining the Wardens is bleh, the entire plotline concerning Jowan and the following sidequest line is way more interesting than any of the follow-up origin character appearances, let alone Dalish Elf, so it has that going for it.

Should I do Soldier's Peak, King's Confidant, or the Dalish quest now?

I'd probably say King's Confidant(Return to Ostagar) since it might have more loot that's useful to you. But then, you might get a lot of use out of the Power of Blood abilities Soldier's Peak(Warden's Keep) provides. Some of the real prizes(Warden Commander Armor, Avernus's Blood Magic robes), won't be useful to you as a Rogue, but then again, you'll have a couple of new vendors with decent/good stuff, and probably most importantly, you'll be able to forge Starfang. I'm not sure of your Rogue playing style but Starfang could be helpful.

Play both of those before heading out for the Dalish, I'd say.

DrizztLink posted...
Is there a point of no return I need to watch for after the Dalish quest and the Landsmeet?

Redcliffe will be changed permanently once you finish the Landsmeet(just like Lothering is currently inaccessible to you), so finish any sidequests or shopping in there beforehand.

Once Redcliffe's changed, talking to Arl Eamon will kick-start the final mission sequence, so avoid that too if you've got stuff left to do.
