It really is not a good idea to try and perpetuate this idea of hardship olympics to see who has it the worst.

Especially since on the internet you're not exactly likely to know much about the person on the other side, what their life has been. And WHAT their life has been, is only one part of it, because everyone's mind reacts to things differently, so what could be just really shitty for one, could be utter horrible torture for another, or not that bad for yet another.

I really don't like when misery becomes a dick measuring contest. It's a weirdly...masculine thing to do. Like oh who suffered the most, who's the most oppressed, etc.

Especially strange it's done so much in first world countries. <_<

I suppose they're probably compatible with each other, and with communism, but making sure that everyone has an equal amount is not a major point of socialist thought. it's more about ensuring that everyone has their basic needs met, and that there are systems in place to prevent exploitation

I find your second question to have a far more interesting answer: I don't know about you, but in most of the jobs that I've had, the work itself hasn't been unpleasant. there are a few things that make them unpleasant though:

long, inconvenient hours
there are two big ways that socialism would alleviate this:
1. larger numbers of workers = less work for each individual worker.

in the current system, many business owners do not do any actual work for their companies, but reap all the profits. there are also people who subsist on welfare and charity, and these people likewise do no real work. in an ideal socialist system, the businesses would be publicly owned, and operated by the workers, so there would be no one involved who wasn't working.

2. fully embracing automation. because of the current system, many workers are fearful of losing their jobs to automation. this becomes a non-issue in a functional socialist system.

for example, suppose a new technology is developed that allows factory workers to perform their tasks twice as quickly. in the current system, this would allow the owner of the factory to fire or lay off half of the workers and pocket more profit themselves. if the factory was used to benefit the workers and the community, they could instead cut the work day in half. if automation is used to benefit the many rather than the few, there's no need to fear it.

incompetence of higher-ups
in a functional socialist system, this would also be fixed: instead of a small board of directors making all the decisions, they would be decided on democratically by the workers, or by the community as a whole.

part of the problem with explaining this is that "work" in a socialist sense is a different concept from "work" in the way we're used to using it. if most of the things that make work unpleasant are gone, people will not need much incentive, especially if they feel like they're doing something useful. some jobs will still have some degree of unpleasantness, but there are undoubtedly some people who enjoy them regardless, and an interesting side effect is that the individuals who do these unpleasant jobs will become respected within their community.

aside from that, the threat of exile from the community can be a powerful motivator.

1. socialism doesn't inherently have anything to do with protection and preservation of the environment
2. communism is the end goal. socialism is the path to get there. socialism is a broader term - communism is a type of socialism. there have been countries and societies that were socialist, and some of those still have some form of socialism today

that being said: it's incredibly disingenuous to blame the previous failures of socialism on the ideology, or even on the followers of the ideology, rather than on the numerous interventions of the US, Britain, and France, and the people arguing against Darklit would do well to acknowledge this
