I like Jordan Peterson's likening the idea of God as a metatruth.

I have to admit as an agnostic I like the way Peterson conveys religious ideas. His framing of 'moral truths', ideas which aren't scientifically verified but allow us to navigate through the world as though they are true, really resonated with me.

Being expected to be the breadwinner and the initiator, and the constant feeling that no one is looking out for you.

Societal expectations to be a "man", but also hand over our taught sense of masculinity. This is a confusing minefield for most men. Such an example would be getting constantly bombarded with calls to be more respectful/mindful/less sexually aggressive, and at the same time being told to be bold, forward and "don't take no for an answer". Women want you to make the first move but also not be creepy.

Essentially this. I'd be interested to know the extent to which men being told they must initiate is socially conditioned, or whether it's somehow biologically entrenched.

Other than preventing stored energy from turning into fat, it releases endorphins, you get some fresh air, it has social value (you have shared interests and look more appealing to others). Yes exercise has become artificial so the motivation is different but the effects are pretty much the same.

Cricket is not too difficult to understand, the terminology makes it sounds more complicated than it really is (e.g the fielding placements such as 'deep square leg', 'long on', 'backward point'). Like any sport watch a few games and soon enough you'll have a firm grasp of what's going on.

We have a pretty mild climate compared to Aus. Very generally warm in the majority of the North Island and warm to cold the further you head South. In certain places in Australia their winter is warmer than our summer.

If you really, really can't stand spiders or snakes the best strategy is to visit Aus in winter and stick to roughly the south-east of the country. In the month I spent travelling there fairly recently I only saw some medium-sized golden orbs and wolf spiders up in Queensland, pretty harmless if you leave them alone (although their fricking ants will bite you, much more annoying!). I wouldn't want to live in the outback for an extended period of time though, that's often where the big ones lurk. Redbacks are pretty easy to avoid but apparently funnel webs can be quite aggressive?

Just a few great MLK quotes for you guys:

If a man hasnt discovered something that he will die for, he isnt fit to live.

An individual has not started living fully until they can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of humanity. Every person must decide at some point, whether they will walk in light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment: Lifes most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?

One of the ways to rise above this self-centeredness is to move away from self and objectify yourself in something outside of yourself. Find some great cause and some great purpose, some loyalty to which you can give yourself and become so absorbed in that something that you give your life to it.

There is the danger that you will misuse your Capitalism. I still contend that money can be the root of all evil. It can cause one to live a life of gross materialism. I am afraid that many among you are more concerned about making a living than making a life. You are prone to judge the success of your profession by the index of your salary and the size of the wheel base on your automobile, rather than the quality of your service to humanity.

New Zealand vs Australia, 1st ODI 2017 (cricket) at Eden Park in Auckland. It was a pretty epic match. We (New Zealand) scored 286 runs for a very decent total. Australia's Marcus Stoinis scored a magnificent 146 off 177 but it wasn't quite enough. Australia ended up with 280, giving New Zealand the victory.
