I'm confused,

Didn't FDR push for minorities to get more rights? How is he a terrible president.

FDR's record on race is mixed, particularly given the internment camps. I think the new deal as economic policy is really good, however it should be acknowledged that its programs often excluded black people, owing to the role of Southern whites in the Democratic coalition at the time.

TopicNSA 'accidentally' deleted surveillance data it pledged to preserve
Antifar

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/19/nsa-deletes-surveillance-data-351730
The National Security Agency destroyed surveillance data it pledged to preserve in connection with pending lawsuits and apparently never took some of the steps it told a federal court it had taken to make sure the information wasnt destroyed, according to recent court filings.

Word of the NSAs foul-up is emerging just as Congress has extended for six years the legal authority the agency uses for much of its surveillance work conducted through U.S. internet providers and tech firms. President Donald Trump signed that measure into law Friday.

Since 2007, the NSA has been under court orders to preserve data about certain of its surveillance efforts that came under legal attack following disclosures that President George W. Bush ordered warrantless wiretapping of international communications after the 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. In addition, the agency has made a series of representations in court over the years about how it is complying with its duties.

However, the NSA told U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White in a filing on Thursday night and another little-noticed submission last year that the agency did not preserve the content of internet communications intercepted between 2001 and 2007 under the program Bush ordered. To make matters worse, backup tapes that might have mitigated the failure were erased in 2009, 2011 and 2016, the NSA said.

The NSA sincerely regrets its failure to prevent the deletion of this data, NSAs deputy director of capabilities, identified publicly as Elizabeth B., wrote in a declaration filed in October. NSA senior management is fully aware of this failure, and the Agency is committed to taking swift action to respond to the loss of this data.

In the update Thursday, another NSA official said the data were deleted during a broad, housecleaning effort aimed at making space for incoming information.

The NSAs review to date reveals that this [Presidential Surveillance Program] Internet content data was not specifically targeted for deletion, wrote the official, identified as Dr. Mark O, but rather the PSP Internet content data matched criteria that were broadly used to delete data of a certain type in response to mission requirements to free-up space and improve performance of the [redacted] back-up system. The NSA is still investigating how these deletions came about given the preservation obligations extant at the time. The NSA, however, has no reason to believe at this time that PSP Internet content data was specifically targeted for deletion.

An NSA spokesman declined to comment on Friday.

Defiance of a court order can result in civil or criminal contempt charges, as well as sanctions against the party responsible. So far, no one involved appears to have asked White to impose any punishment or sanction on the NSA over the newly disclosed episodes, although the details of what happened are still emerging.

Its really disappointing, said David Greene, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which has been leading the prolonged litigation over the program in federal court in San Francisco. The obligations been in place for a really long time now. We had a major dust-up about it just a few years ago. This is definitely something that shouldve been found sooner.

The last legal showdown over the issue may have actually compounded the NSAs problems. In May 2014, an NSA official known as Miriam P. assured the court that the data were safe.

The NSA is preserving magnetic/digital tapes of the Internet content intercepted under the [PSP] since the inception of the program, she wrote, adding that the NSA has stored these tapes in the offices of its General Counsel.

The agency now says, regrettably, that the statement may have been only partially accurate when made.

Do these rules apply to all demographics?

Yes. So did poll taxes and literacy tests

At any rate, these specific rules and rollbacks were explicitly enacted to reduce the black vote.
In particular, the court found that North Carolina lawmakers requested data on racial differences in voting behaviors in the state. "This data showed that African Americans disproportionately lacked the most common kind of photo ID, those issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)," the judges wrote.

So the legislators made it so that the only acceptable forms of voter identification were the ones disproportionately used by white people. "With race data in hand, the legislature amended the bill to exclude many of the alternative photo IDs used by African Americans," the judges wrote. "The bill retained only the kinds of IDs that white North Carolinians were more likely to possess."

The data also showed that black voters were more likely to make use of early voting particularly the first seven days out of North Carolina's 17-day voting period. So lawmakers eliminated these seven days of voting. "After receipt of this racial data, the General Assembly amended the bill to eliminate the first week of early voting, shortening the total early voting period from seventeen to ten days," the court found.

Most strikingly, the judges point to a "smoking gun" in North Carolina's justification for the law, proving discriminatory intent. The state argued in court that "counties with Sunday voting in 2014 were disproportionately black" and "disproportionately Democratic," and said it did away with Sunday voting as a result.

https://theoutline.com/post/2986/stormy-daniels-trump-sex-work?zd=3
Throughout Trumps presidency, one thing has been made very clear: Combating sexism is a very important issue, but only certain women need protecting. Trump supporters well, they rejected Hillary because they literally thought she was the Antichrist. But the left has barely done better: Over this last year, Ive watched plenty of so-called nasty women and their male allies use Trumps involvement with sex workers as further evidence of his immorality, drawing on the worst whorephobic and misogynistic stereotypes. During the campaign, it was Melania with her nude photos, which prompted waves of snipping over what a First Lady is supposed to look like. (Her lack of interest in policy might have been enough, but no.) Now, its the Stormy Daniels scandal that once again highlights the infuriating way we talk about sex work in public.

Here is the main fact: Stormy Daniels is a woman who is a porn performer. But look around, and youll find ample evidence of people and publications replacing her name with porn star, reducing her to an objectifying, stigmatized stereotype. The left certainly has no monopoly on the snide ways to refer to Daniels. Outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly are wielding porn star like an epithet, throwing sex workers under the bus. The deputy Washington bureau chief of The Boston Globe suggests that, despite how absurdly off-base the Trump administration has been, its still more credible than a porn star; and the permanently smug Bill Kristol noted the supposed irony of the Daniels scandal bringing down Trump after facing the forces of decency. Theres an aura of mocking fascination around the whole thing. Trump and a porn star? Really?

Zoom out, and its more than left or right. Politicians, writers, millionaires, celebrities, doctors, lawyers, and on and on they watch our porn, purchase our cam shows, book our escort services. We hold their secrets, desires, fears, but they do not show up for us. They completely dissociate from us in public, crack dead hooker jokes, attack our rights, make us the butt of the joke. Over eight years in the sex industry, Ive seen it all. Ive met men with their social masks off, revealing whats truly there a side their wives, bosses, and best friends never see. Ive witnessed their grotesqueness, and their beauty. But despite the safe space we create for them to explore themselves, at the end of the day were still just whores whereas when the mask slips back on, theyre rewarded with titles, recognition, fame, money, awards, or even the presidency.

The hypocrisy runs deep. Consider the attention this consensual affair has received, when compared with the 19 women whove accused Trump of sexual assault. The discrepancy in moral outrage is so profound as to feel banal when acknowledged. Sexual assault is easily boiled down to he said, she said; sex with a porn star is mostly meant to be mocked. It doesnt matter what else might be taken from the story, like Trumps susceptability to blackmail or the similarity of Daniels account to the women whove accused him of sexual assault. All that matters is the quasi-pornographic titillation of watching the most salacious elements play out in public.

This would all be bad enough if it was just chatter, but these attitudes really do endanger human lives, simply because theyre trying to make a living. Various studies have found that anywhere from 45 to 75 percent of sex workers have faced physical violence; the World Health Organization put it succinctly in a study by summarizing that most violence against sex workers is a manifestation of gender inequality and discrimination directed at women.

U.S. and allied strikes against the Islamic State may have killed as many as 6,000 civilians in 2017, as international forces pushed militants out of strongholds in Iraq and Syria, a watchdog group said Thursday.

In 2017 the war against ISIS moved into the most densely-populated urban centers controlled by the group, with dire results for civilians, Airwars said in a report summarizing its investigations for the year, which it called the deadliest yet for Iraqis and Syrians.

ISIS is an acronym for the Islamic State, the extremist group that drew Western nations into a new Middle Eastern conflict after it captured large swaths of Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Airwars, which investigates allegations of civilian casualties by using social media and other information sources, said that between 3,923 and 6,102 noncombatants were likely killed in air and artillery strikes by the United States and its partners in 2017.

The estimate for Iraq and Syria was more than triple that of the year before, Airwars said.

While the Airwars data includes strikes by the United States and partner nations including Britain and France, most of the military activity has been conducted by American forces.

The groups estimate is vastly higher than the figure put forward by U.S. Central Command, which conducts its own investigations of selected U.S. strikes.

According to its most recent public report, Centcom has determined that at least 817 civilians have been killed since the air campaign began in 2014. The command continues to investigate other reported incidents.

The alleged increase in civilian deaths took place as the United States and partner forces conducted major operations to recapture the city of Mosul, the militants most important stronghold in Iraq, and Raqqa, their onetime capital in Syria.

Islamic State militants frequently positioned themselves among civilians and prevented residents from moving freely in areas they controlled.

While U.S. military officials say they take precautions to prevent civilian casualties, they acknowledge the challenge of avoiding unintended deaths in large-scale operations conducted in densely populated urban areas.

The coalition does everything within its power to limit harm to noncombatants and civilian infrastructure, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said.

We regularly issue strike reports and civilian casualty reports, including results of credible and noncredible allegations, as well as those still pending assessment, on our public-facing website for the world to see, he said.

The Pentagon has pushed back against a perception in early 2017, when observer groups reported an apparent surge in civilian casualties, that it had altered rules guiding the U.S. air campaign.

The worst enforcement provision is criminalizing simply being in the United States without status or violating any aspect of civil immigration law (p. 170). This would turn millions of unauthorized immigrants into criminals overnight. It would also criminalize legal immigrants who fail to update their addresses, carry their green card with them at all times, or otherwise abide by the million inane regulations that Congress imposes on them. Take, for example, the status provided to Dreamers in this bill. It requires them to maintain an annual income of at least 125 percent of the poverty line (p. 396). If they fall below that level for 90 daysnot only are they subject to deportation againthey would be criminals. This bill literally criminalizes poverty among Dreamers. This legislation would immediately undo much of the progress that the Feds have made on criminal justice reform and reducing its prison population.
