Hey, I just realized Amazon doesn't screw over Canada after all. Strike doesn't exist, but a lot of their anime (maybe all of it, I haven't checked) is available on regular Prime Video here, and my brother has Prime. This opens things up for me!

I just watched the first episode of Girls' Last Tour and I love everything about this so far. Post-apocalyptic settings are great and I like that it has such a narrow focus on these two characters.

Well, here's the first few seconds of Crunchyroll vs Netflix for Attack on Titan Ep2

They get the same point across and I haven't done any kind of deep comparison, but from this alone it looked like more than just slightly different word choices or whatever and if I extrapolated that to the entire anime it would be a lot of differences.

I'm watching Attack on Titan now. I figured I'd post occasional thoughts since it appeared on a lot of top 10 lists. Funny story: I knew literally nothing about this anime before going into it so I thought it was sci-fi and set on Saturn's moon, Titan >_>

Anyway, I just finished Episode 7. I assume Eren isn't actually dead but I can't think of a normal way for him to come back from that so I'm guessing he turned into the anti-Titan Titan? I'm tentatively intrigued but I hope this doesn't become a bunch of Godzilla-style big-vs-big battles. That's fine in moderation but I liked the Shadow of the Colossus vibe of small attackers swarming giant monsters and I'll be disappointed if it's abandoned so quickly. Mikasa is especially awesome at killing Titan's and I want her to continue being awesome.

In conclusion, Attack on Titan has been really good so far.

On another note, I watched Episode 1 and the first few minutes of Episode 2 on Crunchyroll but it was lagging and crashing for some reason so I switched to Netflix from Episode 2 onwards. I couldn't help but notice that the translation of the first few minutes of Episode 2 was wildly different. I hope I'm not watching an inferior translation or something.

Yeah, I read about how the manga continued and I'm sad the anime never reached that as well. Still, what the anime had really appealed to me since I can relate to Tomoko's social anxiety. Watamote took it to silly anime extremes, obviously, but there were still several moments where I was like "that exact situation happened to me in high school and that was exactly how I reacted". It was uncanny.

I've finished the first season of New Game! It was definitely good but I still think Working!! is the superior workplace-focused comedy anime. Maybe the second season will put New Game! over the top, I guess I'll see.

Since I'm apparently a slave to whatever the background ad on Crunchyroll is, I also watched the first episode of Urahara on a whim. It was... unique? I don't think I would call it good but I had a weird sensation of wanting to watch more despite that. I guess I'll give it a few more episodes.

Im actually doing a QC for a brand new patch that fully retranslates Agehas route (I know that one yore referring to) and its MUCH more readable than that other patch.

This patch is looking to come out by early-mid 2018

Nice, I'm looking forward to it then! I can handle typos or poor grammar but Ageha's route went past that to the point where I just couldn't follow what was going on. Still, I enjoyed Kotori's route and I wanted to follow the characters a bit more so this is good to hear.

Working on a VN project is interesting too, good luck with it!

I'm done Madoka now, just finished watching the Rebellion movie

Not sure how I feel about that ending (of course they couldn't just go for the happy ending!), but hopefully there's another season or movie someday to further tie things up.

Still, I liked Rebellion more than the anime itself. Parts of it early on were what I envision a great magical girl show being when they were tag-teaming their powers in creative ways to bring down enemies. Mami linking Homura/Madoka with a ribbon so they'd all be part of the time-stoppage, and then Sayaka throwing her swords through Kyoko's barrier to power them up, those moments were both so hype!

Yeah I just checked the 'magical girl' tag on Crunchyroll and selection was fairly limited (Day Break Illusion is at least getting added to my lengthy to-watch list, though, because that's a neat title). Ah well, thanks for the Nanoha recommendation anyway, I'll make a note of it too and maybe it'll turn up somewhere someday!

Crunchyroll was acting up yesterday so I started watching Puella Magi Madoka Magica on Netflix. I'm most of the way through now and I've also done some reading up the series in general (I rarely care about spoilers). I'm going to spoiler-tag my current thoughts.

From my understanding, Madoka is a deconstruction of some 'magical girl' genre. Despite TVTropes describing it as an anime that's regularly recommended to beginners, I feel like I'm losing something by not knowing anything about that genre to begin with. The first three episodes were easily my favorite when they were learning about everything and it seemed like a semi-lighthearted story about friends coming together to battle witches. Then the end of the third episode happened and it's been increasingly grim ever since. I understand that's the whole point of Madoka and I'm certainly appreciating it for what it is (I just finished Episode 10 and timeline shenanigans always appeal to me), but I can't shake the feeling that I would've liked it better if it stayed semi-lighthearted instead. Magical girls beating progressively more dangerous threats while slowly coming together as a group was what I thought the show would be at first, and that sounded pretty good to me! I guess I should look into other magical girl shows in the future that play the tropes straighter.
