AHS has for the longest time had... difficulties with wrapping up loose ends and resolving plotlines in a satisfactory manner, but I feel they finally struck gold with MRN. It was a long time coming, but I think this is my favorite season yet, and the only one that improved on the first overall (Asylum was very close but then suffered a cluttered asspull ending that bogged the whole experience down).

So my thoughts on Lights Out.

First off I want to say I loved the premise. Playing off the age old fear of the dark (something I was not exempt from as a child) is a brilliant choice and led to the creation of a very unique and terrifying entity. The backstory of how she came into her current form of existence was also nice. I love the concept of a mentally ill woman basically willing Diana into existence because she needed a friend during her darker days, only for her possibly imaginary friend to become abusive due to her dependence on her. That much is great.

I have to agree she gets much less terrifying when the black light is introduced, but I guess that's symbolic. The dark itself is nothing to fear, merely what lurks within it: a fear of the unknown that can be dispersed with light. The only real offense the movie commits is brushing over her former existence, and my boyfriend had to point this one out to me. "She gets into people's heads". Okay, but how? Is it because of her disease, is she a witch, or is she just that manipulative?

And why did she ignore Sophie long enough for her to make a family in the first place? Like I get depression isn't always a constant thing, but if Diana really implanted the idea that they were best friends in Sophie's head wouldn't she be emotionally distraught the moment she passed? Why wouldn't Diana be her constant companion from that point?

Nitpicks aside the movie gives off the second greatest atmosphere of any horror movie I've seen in the last year. It's a completely different feeling than the first (The Witch) gave me. Think paranoia instead of dread. Jason and I both agreed there were parts of the movie in which we sweared the monster had entered the dark theater. I can point out more than one instance of a mysterious unexplained sound coming from only a few yards away. I don't think we even signed up for the IMAX experience. It was just that convincing.

Lastly there were a couple unexpected moments of humor dispersed throughout. One scene stands out in particular and you'll know when you see it. I won the jumpscare battle for the record. I jumped once to Jason's twice, and we both didn't jump at the same scares. Ha!
