Presidents have very little to do w/ stock prices, both when they go up and when they go down. It's the same for D's and R's.

But Trump has clung to the stock prices and economy as his one saving grace for why he's a good president, so it's especially hilarious for a market crash to happen while he's in office.

About fucking time!

It's been a bull market for like 9 damn years now. Was unemployed until a few years ago, and by the the time I was able to save up, it was back to around the "record highs" before the crash and I felt super uncomfortable gambling my savings on it continuing to go up. Been waiting years for a crash or at least correction. If it drops 10% I might actually put some money in stocks. If it drops 20% or more, I almost certainly will.
Right now, even w/ those losses it's still probably near the peak, so still overvalued. The Price to Earnings ratio's been out of control for years now w/ no repercussions....thanks, Federal Reserve :(

MadTV died because all their viewers grew tired of it becoming The Stuart and Miss Swan Show. At that same time, SNL was still decent and that was that. By the time MadTV got good again, there weren't enough viewers to care. They had some really good sketches towards the end :/

I always hated the Stuart sketches. Ms. Swan was generally grating but had some funny sketches, especially the one where she fought the ninjas and her whole going home story arc.

I went back to my dorm, but apparently there were literal dumpster fires, cars overturned, and all sorts of other property destruction.
What really pissed me off was that in the end every student's family got a bill to pay for the damages. That's fucking bull shit, even the ones not involved. I wish the police had fucking tear gassed and tazed the lot of them and took down the identities of all involved / photographic evidence and made THOSE jerks and only them pay for the damages. Still angry about it. Sports is fucking stupid.

That's insane. Could they really just make people pay for damages just because they went to that school?

Apparently legally they can, and did. My parents paid it, but the principle of it still upsets me, and they obviously were mad, too. It was a few hundred dollars in damages per student, so it must have been pretty bad.

EDIT: And I mean, think about it. Who's gonna pay for the damage done in Philly now? The taxpayers, either city-wide or state-wide. Cops need to ID as many of the property-destroying bastards as possible and only bill them. Hell, do a wide sweep and bill anyone in the crowds, whether you saw them personally set shit on fire or not. At least they were involved, so it's still more fair than charging people who sat at home and did nothing wrong.

Bingo. And just help fund the school in general, but primarily to fund departments that wouldn't survive otherwise. If it was just to fund the school in general, it would be "Take 10 electives of your choice".

Joelypoely posted...
I disagree. University is meant to provide you with a broad education to help you think critically, write proficiently and have an expansive understanding of the world we live in. If university has become little more than meeting future job requirements we may as well do away with them altogether. If you don't enjoy the process of educating yourself why attend university in the first place?

If that's the purpose, it's doing a really poor job of it.

I had one friend who had to take a "Humanities Elective" in his final year. He chose Sociology, went to the first class, and saw the syllabus. He decided that that class looked like entirely too much work for a "bullshit class" and immediately walked out and dropped it. Then signed up for something else that would require less work. How did that help him "think critically" or "expand the world we live in"? People just flock to whatever classes they can do the best in for the least amount of effort. Talk to any of the people with more structured schedules (CS, engineering, sciences, etc) and ask the students there which electives they took. 90% of them will give you the same answer - because they knew that specific class was easiest.

Well, since you asked...while it's true I took theater as an art elective b/c I suck at art and theater was stupidly easy, for the most part I did choose gen ed electives that interested me, including Japanese (foreign language), several Philosophy classes (somehow managed to cover Letters *and* communication gen ed requirements just w/ them, plus an Engineering Ethics class on top of all that), hell I think even my Human Sexuality class counted towards some gen ed...
Loved my gen eds, they were a lot of fun, plus unlike engineering classes...there were girls. It was funny too, had a few friends who were Philosophy majors and I'd consistently get better grades than them in their own major. :D

I agree it's good to present a broad education to college students and not just make them pure job mills where you learn a specific skill set and nothing else. How dull. And damn, if I had to take NOTHING but math, physics, and engineering classes for my entire bachelor's degree, that'd truly have been awful.

Also only play single player or local co-op, not against other players except for Smash Bros. I guess.

Yes, Stalin was also a moron. Russia's hilariously pathetic showing in the Winter War (a war of conquest 100% the fault of Russia) is usually cited as encouraging hitler to think Russia would be easy to defeat and effectively hastened the two going into conflict.
Both were colossal idiots. They were charismatic and ruthlessly evil which helped them gain power, but shockingly...the tools that help one gain power aren't necessarily the best ones for using it wisely.

Minor correction, but nobody was surprised when Germany attacked Russia.
Stalin was using the treatise as a way to literally pick up the factories and move them beyond the Ural mountains, and needed all of the time possible. Which is why they had to have so much defensive fighting before the factories could kick into gear.

Them going into conflict wasn't surprising, and Stalin planned to attack Germany at some point, iirc. Just the timing of it, happening so soon, and hitler striking first caught Stalin by surprise. That's what I meant.

Britain wouldn't have been able to halt the nazi advance on the western and African fronts w/o the weapons being sent from the U.S.

Sold, not sent. America's most successful period in history was off the back of extorting the allies with unreasonable cost for supplies.

In fact America joined the war because of Pearl Harbour, which was triggered by extorting Japan on oil prices to the degree that expansionism was a more financially viable strategy than dealing with America. Japan couldn't afford to be an American tributary so expanded regardless and took the first strike in the war America threatened if they refuse to subjugate themselves to them.

To be fair, the U.S. was trying to be coy and play semi-"neutral" and claim they're not involved in the war. Just selling arms for money like the good capitalists they were. If they straight up gave the British arms for free, that thin veneer would've dissolved quickly.
It's still a bit messed up and in the end wasn't fooling anybody, but a lot of Americans at the time were isolationist, so FDR had to perform his little rhetorical dance.

And yes, also aware that the Pearl Harbor attack was hardly "unprovoked," and it's a shame that part's seldom taught.

Just read about his command structure and how twisted and confusing it was to the point that it bogged down any military decision-making.

He was a complete fucking moron, but because he had a powerful German war machine (here's a tip: Germany was a dominant military power for the past 100 years or so by that point, they didn't just suddenly become so strong) and some talented generals, he's often thought of as some sort of evil genius or great conquerer. 1) Over a much longer period of time, because he really wasn't as bad as hitler (still very evil, just saying not as bad) and was thus tolerated and allowed to stay in power for life. Presumably if hitler was able to reign as long as Stalin did, his death toll would've continued climbing.

2) It was his own people along w/ not targeting any specific group. Which still should have gotten intervention from other countries but is inherently less objectionable than conquering a bunch of other countries and then systematically murdering their people along w/ his own.

3) I'm always dubious of the claim he killed more, anyway. Depends how you assign blame. Considering the nazis were the aggressor towards nearly every country they went to war with, you could quite reasonably blame them for all the war deaths of Britain, France, Russia, etc... on top of the Holocaust. (Poland, the most-screwed over country of WW2, gets its deaths split between Germany and Russia b/c again, Russia were also evil and in cahoots w/ the nazis for a while)

Maybe because he killed tens of millions of people? For some reason, historians tend to frown on that sort of behaviour.

And, while they helped to keep the Nazis occupied, ultimately it was the US-led Allied forces which won the day.

This is a gross misrepresentation of the war. No, the Soviets did not "keep the Nazis occupied" while America saved the day, the Soviets did the majority of the work in actually defeating the Nazis while America showed up late and decided to take all the credit. Consider that the Eastern front - where the USSR fought almost unsupported against Germany and Japan - was larger than all other fronts of the war (Western, Pacific, and African) combined. The Soviets had more casualties in the war than America had troops. Moreover, even after having suffered one of the highest body counts of any nation in the war, the Soviets still had enough gas in the tank afterwards to grow into a global superpower to rival the US in strength. It is not an exaggeration to say that Hitler lost the war as soon as he decided to invade the Soviet Union.

By contrast, the US showed up two years late to the actual conflict (and even then, only after being attacked) and by the time they actually joined the fighting in earnest, battles like Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain had already stalled the Nazi advance to the West, while the ongoing invasion of the USSR was quickly turning into a disaster for Germany in the East. America certainly played a significant role in bringing the war to a close when it did, but by the time they actually entered the war the Axis defeat was already a foregone conclusion.

American history books like to lionize the American contribution, downplay the role of the other Allies, and almost completely excise the significant contributions.of the USSR (due to many of them having been written during the Cold War), but the reality is that while no single Ally is responsible for the victory over the Axis powers, the USSR almost unarguably was the one who was the greatest contributor to the cause.

With two quick notes that Britain wouldn't have been able to halt the nazi advance on the western and African fronts w/o the weapons being sent from the U.S. (but supplying arms is several tiers below actually doing the fighting, of course) and that Russia's "heroics" weren't intentional but a "hoist by his own petard" moment where Stalin had allied w/ hitler out of convenience and was betrayed and caught by surprise.
But yeah, U.S. involvement helped end the war sooner, but Russia was already on a course to eventually defeat them and by far took the brunt of the fighting and casualties (pretty sure they were the country w/ the most losses, and by a staggering amount over the others...though again partly their own fault for the purge Stalin did on his military before the war and simply not even having as many weapons as soldiers).

I'm glad the U.S. did enter the war and help end it sooner. But Russia sacrificed and contributed more than any other country, albeit not by choice.

I'm happy for him. Feels like a waste when older people win. He'll actually be able to use his winnings to live comfortably for decades and enjoy things.

(Yeah, they can pass it on to their offspring, but usually it seems they live long enough to frivolously blow most of it to get the most out of their remaining years)

did he do like most idiot winners and take the lump sum?

In principle I'd prefer the 20 year pay out based on the financial logic/math.
In reality...your payments cease if you die, and I'd be too damn paranoid about giving powerful groups a large vested interest in my early death.

but I'm not sure what your angle is here on "easily available gun."

He's one of the leftists here that believes nobody should be allowed to own guns and uses every kind of story like this to push an agenda despite the fact that a gun in the room isn't gonna make most people shoot their mother

Not a leftist, but it's cute you think that. I guess to someone so far off the deep end of the right it would look like I am.

Yeah you're about as much not a leftist as zeus is a left leaning centrist

I voted in the last election for Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate and former 2-term Republican governor, because I'm such a raging hippie leftist. You got me! Darn it.

You voted for that idiot? And a libertarian who believes in strict gun control? Does not compute

Hell of a lot smarter than Trump, who you clearly voted for.
And no politician agrees with someone's views 100%, you pick the one who's most agreeable with you. Also I realize "strict" gun control is pretty much impossible in this country so it's not high on my priority list for a candidate's positions.
Same reason I didn't give a shit about Bernie Sanders advocating for free college (which I disagree with). It was never going to get passed by Congress, so his view on it wouldn't have really mattered.
