The point of discovery is an important factor. If I've been grocery shopping for 3-hours, and only discover it after I get home, then there's no way I'm bringing it up. If I'm in the parking lot, and I'm checking the receipt thinking "Hrm that rang in a little light, what gives?" I'm more likely to go back.

There are some tricks. For stills, make it affect the posture. For action shots or animation, try to sell the idea of 'pulling' the weapon around by the hilt rather than swinging it. Nightmare in Soul Calibur does this pretty well.
