Saturdays protests in London and elsewhere were in support of the NHS, which is underfunded and overstretched, and against American-style privatization, according to the Guardian.

Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Judith Jolly said in a statement that Trumps remarks show he is dangerously deluded about the NHS.

Concerns about privatization of the U.K. health system have been fierce of late in part because of an ongoing attempt by the government to introduce a new contract for accountable care organizations, a term borrowed from the American health care system in which different institutions within the health and social care system work together. Critics say it could mean that commercial providers will end up holding responsibility for NHS services.

State Rep. Jeanne Ives, who is running in the primary for governor, was blasted by the party for a campaign ad that mocked transgender people and feminists, among others.

I got curious about how bad this had to be to earn the GOP's disapproval.

https://www.politico.com/amp/story/2018/02/04/illinois-ives-rauner-campaign-ad-389790
The new ad mockingly thanks the governor for clearing a path in support of a series of social issues. Then it taps just about every conservative bogeyman in Illinois politics, and every lightning-rod cultural issue.

Thank you, for signing legislation that lets me use the girls bathroom, says a deep-voiced actor.

Thank you, for making all Illinois families pay for my abortions, says a woman wearing a pink hat symbolic of womens marches. An African-American woman wearing a Chicago Teachers Union shirt thanks Rauner for purportedly making the rest of the state bail out city public schools and teachers pensions.

The ad plays off an earlier Rauner ad that his campaign ran statewide for months entitled Thanks, Mike, and featured GOP governors from surrounding states thanking Rauner nemesis state House Speaker Michael Madigan for blocking Rauners reforms.

And that's a sitting legislator!

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/holocaust-denier-arthur-jones-republican-3rd-congressional-district-lipinski-newman/

Arthur Jones an outspoken Holocaust denier, activist anti-Semite and white supremacist is poised to become the Republican nominee for an Illinois congressional seat representing parts of Chicago and nearby suburbs.

Well first of all, Im running for Congress not the chancellor of Germany. All right. To me the Holocaust is what I said it is: Its an international extortion racket, Jones told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Indeed, Jones website for his latest congressional run includes a section titled The Holocaust Racket where he calls the genocide carried out by the German Nazi regime and collaborators in other nations the biggest blackest lie in history.

Jones, 70, a retired insurance agent who lives in suburban Lyons, has unsuccessfully run for elected offices in the Chicago area and Milwaukee since the 1970s.

He ran for Milwaukee mayor in 1976 and 13th Ward alderman on Chicagos Southwest Side in 1987.

Since the 1990s to 2016, Jones has jumped in the GOP 3rd Congressional District primary seven times, never even close to becoming a viable contender.

The outcome will be different for Jones in the Illinois primary on March 20, 2018.

To Jones own amazement, he is the only one on the Republican ballot.

And given the fact that Ive got no opposition in the primary, OK, I win that one (the primary) by default all right, Jones said during an interview in a coffee shop in Lyons.

That leaves Illinois Republicans saddled with a nominee who is well known for his racist and white supremacist activities.

Tim Schneider, chairman of the Illinois Republican Party said in a statement to the Sun-Times, The Illinois Republican Party and our country have no place for Nazis like Arthur Jones. We strongly oppose his racist views and his candidacy for any public office, including the 3rd Congressional District.

Jones told the Sun-Times he is a former leader of the American Nazi Party and now heads a group called the America First Committee. Membership in this organization is open to any white American citizen of European, non-Jewish descent, he said.
...
In November, Jones will face either Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., a Western Springs resident, or Lipinskis Democratic primary challenger, Marie Newman from LaGrange.

Jones will almost certainly be defeated in November. Thats because the 3rd Congressional District is one of the most heavily Democratic in the state.

The district sweeps in the old Chicago Democratic machine wards of 11, 13, 14, 19 and 23 and meanders through a corridor to wide swathes of southwest suburban turf. The district was drawn to protect Lipinski, whose father, William a former congressman is close to House Speaker Mike Madigan, D-Chicago, who is also the chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois.

How did this happen?

Republicans didnt bother to muster a credible candidate because the district is so Democratic. There is always a debate if parties should recruit candidates to run races they are highly likely to lose.

Jones could not be knocked off the ballot.

In 2016, Jones was removed from the 3rd District GOP ballot in legal actions engineered by the Illinois Republican Party.

Records show that John Fogarty Jr., the general counsel for the Illinois GOP, handled the objections to Jones 2016 nominating petitions filed with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Once Jones was removed from the ballot because his petitions were faulty, Lipinski ran unopposed in the 2016 contest.

By 2018, Jones took his petitions door to door himself and took greater care to have valid signatures.

Here's the relevant context from the NYT story, for whatever it's worth:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/03/sports/nassar-fbi.html
The F.B.I. declined to answer detailed questions about the speed and nature of its investigation, or to provide an official who might put the case in context. Instead, it issued a 112-word statement asserting that the sexual exploitation of children is an especially heinous crime, and that the safety and well-being of our youth is a top priority for the F.B.I.

The statement also said that the many allegations against Dr. Nassar transcended jurisdictions an apparent suggestion that internal efforts to coordinate among its bureaus and with other law enforcement agencies partly explained the inquirys slow tempo.
...
Some of the delay appears to have been related to questions concerning federal-versus-state jurisdiction, as well as jurisdiction within the F.B.I. itself. Although the Indianapolis bureau had received the information, the alleged sexual abuse by Dr. Nassar had taken place in Texas, at the Karolyi ranch, and in Michigan, where he lived and worked. And Ms. Maroney lived in California.

According to Mr. Abbott, his agents in Indianapolis did not have the case for long. When we consulted with the U.S. attorney, we knew right away that we would not have venue, he said. It was never really our case.

Mr. Abbott said that his agents conducted some interviews, but he declined to say with whom. He also said written reports were sent within weeks to F.B.I. offices in Michigan and Los Angeles.

The retired agent emphasized how the sensitivities and difficulties of child-exploitation cases can contribute to the length of investigations. You are dealing with victims who sometimes dont want to be interviewed, he said. It is extremely delicate. And you also have the parents of minors who are sometimes not comfortable with interviews.

Asked why federal law enforcement officials did not notify people other gymnasts, parents, coaches that a potential child molester was in their midst, Mr. Abbott said, Thats where things can get tricky.

There is a duty to warn those who might be harmed in the future, he said. But everyone is still trying to ascertain whether a crime has been committed. And everybody has rights here a reference to both the alleged victims and the person being accused.

The Nassar case might have been further complicated, he said, by the fact that there was a vigorous debate going on about whether this was a legitimate medical procedure.

I find it bewildering that the American left has suddenly denied the existence of the deep state since Trump took office, as though the deep state didn't murder Martin, Malcolm, and Fred.

Anyone that poses a great enough threat to the system's desired status quo and/or entrenched interests is a potential target of the deep state, though its tactics seem to be a little less blatant these days.

I'm not convinced that Trump represents a threat to the status quo the way the 60s left did.
