Hanasaku Iroha is such a weird show for me. Like looking at it from the outside I can see there's a good anime there, but at a more personal level I find the protagonist so absurdly unlikable that just nothing about the show actually works for me. One of my weird anime opinions I guess.

By the way what type of show is Re:Creators? From the synopsis and how I remember people talking about it, I had the impression that it was something like Mirai Nikki, but now I'm seeing it's got the same director as Fate/Zero and the first Kara no Kyoukai movie? Not sure what to make of this.

In case anyone is wondering, no I do not consider Mirai Nikki and Fate/Zero to be similar shows in any significant way even though both focus on a battle royale story.

Edit: Maybe a more accurate way to say that is that I think any similarities that do exist between the shows are mostly surface-level comparisons.

Huh. I guess Konosuba 2 is higher than the first season on MAL at least.

I will say it's a pretty common thing for me with comedies where I like the setup episodes while they're still introducing all the characters, but then I think the show grows stale pretty quickly after that. So that's probably what's going on here.

Also I figure I should explicitly mention I am trying to binge shows before the year ends, so if anyone wants to try and sell me on their favorite show then there's a realistic chance it actually gets me to watch it. Unfortunately since that's coming up pretty quickly I'll only realistically have time for 3-4 more shows, but that's just how it is.

Made in Abyss is already pretty much locked in to one of those slots, but for the others I'm open to most things that aren't sequels.

Probably actually.

It's something that's maybe not as obvious to us because I think today his main influence is on anime movies and not as much on TV anime. But I'd definitely say something of his should be up there. He's probably had a reasonable amount of influence even on TV anime at least within the fantasy genre also.

Also in terms of broader cultural impact his movies are still some of the only ones to to gain significant traction outside of Japan, of course.

What's influential about Haruhi? Outside of doing the idiocy of Endless Eight, nothing stood out. School based anime, weirdo/hyper main character, straight-laced male character, slice of life dumbassery; typical anime stuff.

That can't have been the first.

I mean these things did exist but I believe they were much more prominent after Haruhi than they were before.

That statement is based mostly on feeling though I admit, so if someone actually makes like a list of school anime in a similar vein as Haruhi, then that might prove me wrong.

I mean SAO got a movie a year after it ended and a season 2 another year after that. Plus those were evidently successful enough that now five years after the fact we've gotten another movie with an announced season 3 on the way.

Some online anime communities like to trash SAO, but looking at the big picture it's still quite popular I think.

I feel like K-On or maybe Haruhi is the answer as far as impact on anime goes. Or at least I think it's that instead if you want to go the route I think you guys are envisioning with Love Live. Could probably also make an argument here for shows in different genres with similar status, such as Dragonball or SAO.

For impact on culture as a whole I find it extremely hard to argue anything other than Pokemon.

The thing about the "matchup" argument is that if the details of why the matchups matter aren't sufficiently justified, or they feel unnatural, then it's effectively the same thing as the power levels being arbitrary in the first place.

Some franchises, like Hunter x Hunter, do a pretty good job with this, but Fate I don't think is always in the same category.

I certainly haven't done extensive research, but I always thought the Fate/Zero servants were stronger than the Fate/Stay Night ones as a whole.

Then again maybe I shouldn't comment at all here. I've always believed a problem with the Fate series is that the power levels have no consistency and that any character can become selectively overpowered as the plot demands it.

Well more what I meant is I consider it one of the stronger movies whereas I think others consider it one of the weaker ones.

I almost definitely like it less than most fans on an absolute scale. My favorite movie was 5 and I only gave that one an 8/10 the first time through, and I imagine there are plenty of people that give all of the movies an 8 or higher. (This time I have given movie 1 an 8/10 and then the next 3 a 7/10, for the record)

I don't think this one is that popular, but I actually rather liked it both the first time through and this time. Then again I will say I like the plot/character aspects of this show a lot more than the action elements, so maybe it's no surprise I like this episode comparatively more than most people.

I think talking about this in generalities is not a good idea. Like in all likelihood whatever event or events you have in mind that sparked this actually are bad, but then trying to generalize this to "the left" as a whole is just not valid, considering "the left" consists of millions of people with different backgrounds and philosophies. Like sure, there are terrible people within the left, but that doesn't mean every or even a significant portion of left-leaning individuals are bad people.

Also I am a pretty active member of my local Smash community and have literally not seen any of this, though I admit the Ohio Smash 4 community is pretty chill as far as Smash communities go. (Other than seemingly inevitable PR drama every 3 or 6 months or whatever it is, but I digress.)
