There was a "planet of the apes" in like 2002 or something with Mark Wahlberg and Ape-raham Lincoln, but that's not related to these recent reboots.

Most of the gamebreaking/fun bugs like cloning stuff are gone, but everything more than 5 feet from your character is still about 5 fps. Because there's obviously some attempt to handle it, it makes me think the whole underlying engine is just so poorly optimized they can't really do much short of going through everything from the ground up. And that isn't gonna happen.

Wow I thought Starfield just randomly disconnecting my controller every 3-5 minutes was the worst thing the game could do, but apparently not.

It's weird, because the majority of the real bugs and stuff that are actually causing harm seemed to only show up with the last update. Maybe it's like Fallout 4 and the last update just broke the game. At least with Starfield it should be new enough Bethesda will eventually bother to fix it.

I keep up, though not usually as the episodes are coming out.

It's still not a bad show, though it's basically a different show than it was in the 90s. Kind of expected given you kind of have to adjust as time goes on like that, especially if you're a cultural icon like the Simpsons was then. It's almost the silly family sitcom they were originally parodying. Its not even that much of a change from the "classic" era, its just nothing is ever gonna keep up with your memories of when The Simpsons was a much bigger part of your life.

Seasons 32-34 have some surprisingly good episodes in there, and depending on how far you want to go back, there are a handful of episodes in the last like 10 years that would be considered classic episodes if in any other cartoon.

I think if The Simpsons just stopped at like Season 25, and a "new" show was Seasons 26ish to now, it would be regarded a lot better.

I bet Maher just sees DeSantis failing miserably, and so is platforming him so when he completely fails Maher can say it was him who exposed DeSantis and killed his chances, like when he interviewed Milo and then like 6 months later Milo got canceled with all the crazy stuff he did. Maher didn't mention any of the stuff that actually killed Milo's prominence, just that it happened after going on Maher's show.

I don't think Maher is a strong conservative by any means, we're all just really conflating being a right wing grifter with "just really wants to sound like the smartest guy in the room" and I think the latter fits with how Maher behaves more.

Twitter/X is kind of at a "too big to fail" moment right now - minor changes like a premium subscription isn't really enough to get people to change their habits enough to bother dropping Twitter. Musk has to really go overboard in order to actually turn people away (like that rumoured plan about a subscription for regular use)

That's not to say it's making money or anything, but unless Musk actively burns everything down, Twitter/X will be sticking around long enough to definitely have an active role in the 2024 election.

This post has strong, "Don't bother taking any action unless you can solve this other thing first," energy.

Stopping the easiest-inflicted and most traumatic symptoms of an issue will overall help the issue. But you're saying it's useless to try because it won't fix the root cause? Because that's what it feels like you're saying.

I'm saying that something like access to mental health and limiting gun control are overarching solutions to remedy a lot of different problems. But those alone aren't going to solve anything because they're dealing with something at the end of the line, and not any of the factors building up to it.

It's a good thing to do for all kinds of reasons, but if you're pitching it for a specific goal (reducing male suicidality) you aren't even really addressing the problem. It'll make it a bit harder for someone to kill themselves, but this isn't addressing any of the myriad of factors that led people to that point to begin with.

I'm not saying it isn't something that should be done, I'm saying it's not an answer to this problem.

It just sounds like men just want the vibes to sound more pro-men, even if the left is already supporting policies that support men. And that's fine, people are emotional, and words and narratives are important. So yes, there should be more specifically pro men narratives in order to make the vibes look positive.

Well, so let's look at male suicidality you mentioned in the last post. More access to mental health and gun control will technically help with male suicidality, but it's not really doing much to respond to the actual issues men specifically face that lead to this. These are very general overarching solutions that will absolutely have an impact on the larger problem, but is ignoring the smaller issues that actually lead to it.

Better gun control may help you not shoot yourself, and better access to mental health can help a bit when you're depressed, but they don't have much impact on what is happening to push you to a depressive/suicidal state in the first place, because its a solution at the end of the road, and not the beginning.

Its sort of handwaving away the actual issue with something abstract and saying that'll solve the problem without real acknowledgement of the underlying problem.

Like, I'm really curious what people mean when they say "the left"

The thing is, it isn't so much of an anti-men thing (though sometimes its sort of a like, resistance to opening "their space"), so much of a general indifference. Saying you care about gun control or better access to mental health, or prison reform can help the larger systemic issues men can face, it doesn't really address any of the specific issues men have, which are what help cause all of the larger ones.

VFalcone posted...
I just came up with it myself based on what I know and understand the issue to be. I'm only 26, so not too long ago, I was a young man. I very much did get drawn into the right-wing hole back then, and in doing so, I got into Red Pill, MGTOW, Jordan Peterson, "Ben Shapiro owns ", and Stephen Crowder videos. It's scary how quickly you get sucked in and you don't even realize it, but I got out. However, I never forgot some of the talking points and information they used to trap me. Those issues and stigmas are real unfortunately, but the right only uses young men as pawns. None of their political policies do anything to help the boys and men they supposedly care about. They don't care about men's mental health or college or anything else.

I had a very similar experience to this 100%. Being a young male at like peak gamer gate-era when all these guys were at their most prominent - it was so easy to fall into this hole. Especially if you have poor social skills, don't have many friends, etc... meaning you don't really have many other options. I can definitely see how easy it would be for similar things to happen today.

I'm not saying don't do nothing... I'm saying it's not fair to say "...the left sucks..." in terms of a rigged game.

Understand? Let's not give a side a fair shake, but say they suck anyway...

But those aren't mutually exclusive statements. The game can be biased in terms of one side, and the opposing side can be bad at fighting it.

In fact biasing the game on one side makes it more likely for the other side to be bad at fighting it, because there's an incentive for the other guys to stop trying.

And that's the case here.

Rigged game. You decide what is highlighted, and also can call out peeps for not being highlighted.

But it isn't just a rigged game, the right has just convinced you its a rigged game so you might as well not play.

The solution is to have more people on the left pushing harder on these topics, and there aren't many there because the left doesn't like when that happens. This is like the 6th time people have attacked Vaush for this tweet, and its always really dumb.

Vaush in the OP is actually an example of this happening. He's a big part of the reason there's been a huge decline in conservative "DEBATE ME BRO" culture where just winning an argument makes you look like you're right, because someone like Vaush is on the left and can actually fight back - which is a very bad idea when all your arguments are garbage.

You can't single-handedly fix such a major issue, but this is how you change the direction and make things better. Especially because Vaush is one live-streamer with a bunch of his own issues. But the way to stop rigging the game is more of this, not throwing your hands in the air and going "oh well".

It's a really awkward topic to dance around IMO. There's definitely male-specific problems in society, just like there are female-specific problems in society, and a lot of the "progressive" spaces don't really put much effort in addressing things beyond like, an abstract generalization about it existing. I don't think it's a specific attack against men so much as it's like, indifference? It's generally some sort of hand-wavy ignorance of the topic because they don't want to talk about it.

Add to that that there also seems to be backlash for some reason any time this topic is actually addressed, like progressive spaces don't want to care about male-centric issues. This is like the 6th time Vaush has faced drama for this one tweet.

Shadow_Don posted...
Yup. Thats the issue.

When people like JP clarify and dive deeper what you start to notice is that courting young men actually means tossing women back into the kitchen.

This is how people like JP are taking advantage of this vacuum. The young boys have problems that aren't being acknowledged, and guys like JP jump in and tell them the answer is this and that, and builds up to the incorrect conclusion of "get women back into the kitchen". Because it's often the only answer these boys are being given, they'll accept it from someone who has all the qualities you're told makes someone "successful". And you're probably 12-16 and don't know any better about how to actually question these conclusions, and won't be able to until guys like JP have had their hold over long enough for the conclusions to really sink in.

3) Don't blame men for their plight, or for the state of society re: gender, and stand up against those who do blame men for these things.

This, or something like it, is the way forward.

But that's just a correlation. It's not even a rule of thumb. You can just look to the Bubonic plague for a disease with a comparable fatality rate and see that transmissibility is actually dependent on a great deal many more factors than "mortality rate", and simplifying the issue down to mortality rate fundamentally misrepresents how infectious diseases work.

I think you're missing the big point here. Bubonic Plague had a completely different mechanism of transmission that person to person. It didn't matter there that an infected person might just die because it wasn't counting on that person to spread. If the report about it being spread person-to-person is accurate (note: I am just taking post 24 at face value), comparing it to Bubonic Plague is apples and oranges.

There are indeed a ton of variables that affect transmissibility, but there's also a world of difference between a zoonotic disease and an anthroponotic disease. And with anthroponotic diseases, mortality rates are a bigger factor.

a disease with human-to-human transmission needs the virus to be able to keep you up and infecting those around you - if its severe enough to leave you bedridden and you die, you don't have much of a chance to spread - making it likely for the virus to just run through all the infected population, and then the only people left either have a built-up immune response or are dead.

I agree it isn't a definite answer, but its definitely a factor here.

That's... not true.

Really high mortality rates tend to kill infected people faster than they can reproduce and spread to others, so even if its quite infectious its much more likely to just burn out the whole supply quickly before it can spread too much.

It's not a guarantee, but it is the likely response of something with as high a mortality rate as might be reported.
