Depends where you are in the world.

Here in NZ we've got in most cities:
* Paper, glass and aluminium - generally it's agreed that these are a good idea. It does all get recycled
* Plastics with grade 1, 2 or 5 (PET, HDPE or PP) - because these are the ones we can actually make sure get recycled
Most other plastic grades are being slowly banned from use in food or consumer goods:

USA used to be innovative, and we used to have numerous places to recycle. Now you can hardly find anyplace to recycle aluminum. Which is weird, since those in power want all these metals so badly.

For example, brass knuckles were banned, and no dimes/quarters/ other coins after 1964 were made in all silver. Know why? They want all the precious metals and $$$

Aluminum is being used to make vehicles now. So why isn't there a program to collect aluminum cans?

Just glad this is taken seriously.

I wanted an environmental job, but that was not in the cards.

The point of recycling isnt to save money though (although many local city governments would disagree).

The reason why we got all this single use plastic waste was Coca-Cola, to save costs. Now everything is in plastic bottles. We already had a system. The glass bottles would be re-used.

They recycle the metals, of course, but the plastics are just dumped, even when you pay for the service.

Apparently, the most recycled thing is the automobile, to no ones surprise.
