All things considered, 41 is a pretty accessible entry point.

There are a few other characters that get really good later. But yeah, I will admit that it's a very top-heavy season where 6 or 7 people are just SO GOOD that they carry an otherwise relatively mid-tier cast to an insane level.

Pearl Islands is the best season.

I've talked to very few people who don't have it in like, their top 5 or so.

Despite being a returning player and current legend, Parvati's Cook Islands appearance is a whole lot of nothing

This has me thinking about a recent Survivor "what if" that I've been mulling over, and it's a pretty big impact that begins with a largely-forgotten player.

Tina Scheer, the first boot of Exile Island, was originally supposed to be on Guatemala, but dropped out shortly before filming due to her son's death. They gave her an open invitation to come back whenever she was ready and she opted to participate in the very next season. First off, obviously it's terrible what happened to her and her family, and it's definitely too bad that we didn't get her on Guatemala because I think she had a much better shot on that season (given that her replacement, Amy, narrowly missed making the merge on an injured ankle), and I can say that, her being one of two Survivor contestants I've had the pleasure of meeting personally, she's an absolutely lovely and naturally entertaining person and I think she could have been an all-star had she made a deep run.

But more to the point of Panama, let's say she wasn't on that season. Depending on who is there in her place, I think it's extremely possible, maybe even probable, that Cirie is the first boot that season. So not only do we get robbed of a Survivor legend before she's even born, but the cross-season implications mean that she's almost certainly not on Micronesia, meaning that season goes completely differently and I think there's a very good chance Parvati goes early (and almost 0 chance she wins). Thus, she goes down as yet another "oh, they brought her back?" young woman returnee.

Honestly, I'd say Survivor was still very much a cultural phenomenon up through at least Vanuatu. I do remember your everyday people, plus radio DJs, talk show hosts, etc. still chatting about what happened on last night's episode at that point.

Im not gonna remember a damn thing about the post merge cast from 44 this time next year.

I have a pretty good memory and have seen most pre-40 seasons at least twice and usually there ends up being one or two people that I just can't tell you anything about but there are a couple of extreme examples where there is a significant chunk of the cast that just makes me throw my hands up and Cook Islands is one of those. Ghost Island is another.

And I feel like I'll actually remember these people, whereas I just learned that there was someone named Lindsay on either 43 or 44 and I couldn't even picture her. My mind went to Lindsay from 42.

I remember recently looking at the edgic chart for 43 and seeing the name James and legit couldn't remember him and had to look him up. And that was someone who made the merge/jury.

I do agree that 90-minute episodes helped 45 tremendously. The show has become so convoluted with twists and advantages that the extra half hour was absolutely necessary for development of characters and story arcs, and they utilized the extra time very well.

It's already confirmed that, despite most of CBS's primetime lineup returning in February, both Survivor and TAR will continue 90 minute episodes for at least the spring seasons. I'm hyped for Survivor and hope it stays this way permanently. I'm less optimistic about TAR, especially knowing what we know about the production of 36.

To me the new era seasons go as follows...

42 and 45 are excellent. High-tier seasons.

41 is solid. Somewhere slightly in the top half.

44 has some really good stuff but also a lot of problems. Somewhere slightly in the bottom half.

43 is a snooze-fest. Solidly in the bottom half but probably not bottom 10 because there were just so many God-awful seasons in the 20s and 30s.

Also, recently made a new IRL friend who is a die-hard superfan so I actually have someone new to talk to about the show off this board haha

Yeah people were complaining about her all season but while she isn't my favorite, I'm totally fine with her.

You'll never see me outright rank a cast again. I'd rather just give an in-no-particular-order list of my favorites and leave it at that. I have a few reasons for this. For one, as I've been working hard both in and out of therapy to let more things roll off my back, fewer people on RTV bother me as much as they used to (and I'm pretty sure that at least subconsciously the "need" to have someone at the bottom of my list often made me disproportionately hate someone who didn't deserve it). More importantly though, over the past few years, the line between raking TV characters crafted from footage of real people, and ranking the real people themselves, has become more and more blurred, and I'm absolutely not about the latter, and, especially in the age of social media and ESPECIALLY post-2018 and post-2020, it's become much harder and much more controversial to rank them just based off of what they gave us on the show and leave out things they've said and done in real life, which I always tried to do. So I'd just rather not have a part in that anymore and be happy to root for my favorites.

That being said, Inviso's top 5 and especially top 3 is <3

Yeah I'm currently torn between which is the best New Era season between this and 42. I need to let this sink in some.

Also the cast was amazing. As I said last week, almost half the cast qualifies as top tier.

Watching Reindeer Games...

My God, why do they keep bringing Cody back? He's easily the least-compelling TV of this entire cast and it's not even remotely close. He's never been good TV and just isn't fun to watch at all. At least he's second out which I never saw coming.

Not a single Reba. Despite Drew being someone to silently loathe and Austin being a dumbass, they're not in the top half of this cast.

I listed 8/18. Despite how bad he's been the past couple episodes, Austin probably still rounds out my top half because his revenge tour over a sandwich is one of the most hilariously petty things I've ever seen on this show.

Yeah I think Jake's path to a win is idoling out Julie at 5 then beating Dee in firemaking.

Kellie on the jury is fantastic. That unfiltered bitterness has been sorely missed since the start of Big Movez

Emily, Jake, Bruce, Kaleb, Kendra, Kellie, Sabiyah and Katurah all are stars and every season needs a cast of this calibur where the top tier is literally almost half the cast.

I recall Turok 2 being my first M-rated game, and it was a birthday gift from a friend.

I remember being so shocked when I received it, "Whaaat??? You got me an M-rated game????"

I think I was only like 10 or 11 at the time, so I was a fairly innocent child......though ironically, I had no problems with playing Conker's Bad Fur Day.

You never forget your first! Mine was Perfect Dark and I was 12.
