I was thinking of old shows I watched as a kid and remembered there was one episode where Tommy gets kidnapped by the Wet Bandits and none of his family ever realized it. That's fucked up thinking about now. In the literal second episode, Tommy almost got mauled by a dog without the parents knowing it. 3D Sonic games already limit their game's appeal to a specific audience (people that like bad games) It doesn't matter how you feel about the quality of modern Sonic games. It doesn't change the fact that there's a stigma against 2D Pixel art graphics looking "too old" or "too retro".
