Everything you described is part of why it's survived for so long. Overhead/upkeep on the site has to be minimal compared to its contemporaries. At least before Fandom got involved...

Yeah, thanks for keeping contests going for as long as possible. Nothing like them anywhere else on the internet.

Based on your ratings, I think you just don't like 'badass' type male characters very much. This is the opposite of Lopen, who rates primarily on cool character designs.

I mean I really like the game a lot. But the characters don't stand out enough imo. Except Vivi and maybe Dagger and Steiner.

FF9 has plenty of memorable moments, they're just usually more low-key than the bombast of FF7 and FF8. It's a vibes kind of game. Even then there's stuff like Cleyra and Alexander.

As for characters - I'd both agree and disagree. The first main four are very good, and Freya is good early on, but the latter party members are iffy. I think half the main cast being very good is still a better success rate than most RPGs though.

Glad to see Frieren doing well. I was worried that it wouldn't vibe with the general anime audience.

I chalk the 2018 'mascot boost' up to the format more than anything else. When a voter is forced to participate in four polls, the characters that benefit the most are going to be the ones that have few dedicated fans - but widespread notoriety. Maybe you can attribute some of Crash/Spyro boosting to their new games, but characters like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong also did extremely well.

The 2-D FF characters were a different breed before Dissidia. That game brought them back into the limelight and gave them actual decent match pic material.

45% on Crash Bandicoot seems bad, but in 2018 it was also equal to like 43% on Big Boss. Cereal mascot type characters went crazy that year.

Cecil's history is one of poor timing and unfortunate bracket placement, not weakness. He actually placed in the top half of the 2018 X-stats.

Cecil would definitely beat Ramza. Easy 55-45.

Does it? I watched it on Netflix for the first time recently, and it defaulted to the dub. Unless you're talking about Crunchyroll.

The main issue with dubbed anime is that most anime dialogue is atrocious, so it naturally sounds worse in your native language. That should be less of a problem for something like Scott Pilgrim.

I always have disliked the idea of giving 1's to characters solely on the basis of not liking them as people. Like the criteria for evaluation shouldn't be based on some moral code but on a combination of writing, design, gameplay, and then maybe a smidgen of personal taste/judgment about values.

Mostly agree with this, although I think it's fine to dislike a character based on personal preferences. With that said, you can easily tell when someone is voting solely on personal preferences without taking anything else into consideration. Like, are you actually giving Wakka a 1, or are you giving the idea of Wakka a 1 because he reminds you of some people in real life?

I struggle to think of a beast tamer-style class in any RPG that didn't feel underwhelming, honestly.

Yuffie is confusing but acceptable

It's the people who drop in and slam down their only 10/10 for Lightning that make me question things

I don't think this is possible unless you just care about character design/base aesthetics and nothing else.

Also Merylwb specifically is...not the most important character, even when accounting that rating on ARR alone is a bad idea for FF14. Like her main scenes of importance are all the way in Endwalker. Those scenes are really good but not sure why she got rated before most of the actual main characters.

Alphinaud is (purposefully) unlikable at the start but he's definitely never boring. He always has a strong personality & character arc and helps drives the plot.
