A friend was ranting the other day because he had gotten through two rounds of interviews before the company told him that, oh hey, sorry, but the job wasn't actually available after all.

Turns out that the company had offered someone an internal promotion to a management role, and they were so sure he was going to take the position that they started interviewing for his old position. But then he decided that he didn't want the promotion, so the people who were being interviewed for the old position just got told that there wasn't an opening anymore.
