The problem is that there _IS_ a study on this, it just says that trans women don't posses any advantage in sports, aside from height, after about 18 months of HRT.

the study indicates that the main "advantage" conferred to men is increased blood O2 that is carried by testosterone.

the whole "men build muscles 3x faster than women" is literal horse shit. men are able to work out longer and harder, on average, and thus it appears they build muscles faster.

in reality, people build muscles at the same rate.

This is the dumbest take I've seen so far and reflects a deep ignorance of how APIs work.

with facts like that im slaughtered!

here's an article...

https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbestechcouncil/2020/06/23/the-history-and-rise-of-apis/?sh=12b255d845c2

paywall so...

The modern use of APIs sparked a totally new way of communicating that enabled an era of sharing and spawned the interconnected world that we live in today.

Between 2000 and 2002, online commerce and information sharing was brand new and booming. Three companies saw an opportunity to expand their impact by making their information more shareable and accessible than ever before: Salesforce, eBay and Amazon.

In 2000, Salesforce released what many consider the first modern API. Around the same time, eBay and Amazon developed APIs that allowed developers access.

These developments meant that for the first time, commerce and data-sharing were openly accessible for a wide range of customizable uses.

Another important event occurred around this time in 2000, computer scientist Roy Fielding published this dissertation, which introduced the concept of "REST," a software architectural style. The concept was meant to standardize software architecture across the web and help components easily communicate with each other.

More APIs, More Connection

Between 2004 and 2006, the use cases for APIs begin to expand beyond basic information sharing and e-commerce capabilities. During this two-year window, we started to see the early stages of a highly connected world emerging.

In 2004, Flickr launched as a place to store and organize digital photos online. Their functionality included an API, which meant users could share their photos across platforms, and developers could incorporate photo sharing into new services and ideas.

In 2006, Facebook (which had been around since 2004) launched an API that gave developers access to an unprecedented amount of user information from photos and profile information to friend lists and events. Developers used this information to create everything from personalized quizzes to Facebook games.

Also in 2006, Twitter introduced its API after noticing that developers around the world were pulling information from its site.

Sharing Resources To Transform Geography And Digital Infrastructure

It became clear that APIs were a convenient way for companies with a lot of resources to share those resources with developers and expand their footprint, spark new ideas and accelerate development.

A perfect example of this is Google Maps. Google launched its API around 2006 to share the massive, impossible-if-you're-not-Google amounts of geographical data they had collected.

In 2007, Facebook launched its Facebook Platform, which encouraged developers to use the company's vast social data and build new applications and solutions. Meanwhile, Amazon launched its Simple Storage Service (or S3) and Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which provided access to Amazon's data storage and server infrastructure.

APIs Starting To Stand On Their Own

By 2008, APIs had become critical for building an increasingly interconnected world but they were considered just a single layer of software that helped bigger systems function.

Twilio is often cited as the first company to make an API their entire product. In 2008, they introduced an API that could communicate between telephones to make a call or send a text.

In the years that followed, other API-as-a-product companies sprung up: Stripe for making payments, Algolia for integrating search functions into your website, and many more. This shift set the stage for the marketplace of APIs that we have today.

2018: APIs And The Year Of Privacy Concerns

With increased connection and global data sharing inevitably come privacy and security concerns. In 2018, the first comprehensive law addressing the new frontier of use and sharing of personal information was passed: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To me, this European law represented a change in attitude about global connectedness. The GDPR also represented a new challenge for companies using APIs that would need to produce records of personal information sharing upon request.

Another watershed data privacy moment happened in 2018: the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Remember the above-mentioned Facebook API? When one developer discovered that they could use the API to create a quiz that collected personal data from Facebook users and their friend networks, and then sold that data to a political consulting firm (check out this helpful diagram outlining how the scandal unraveled), the conversation about pervasive sharing and data privacy permanently shifted.

The scandal exposed the dark side of APIs and free information sharing and left companies scrambling to develop systems for tracking and monitoring the APIs they consume.

Managing APIs

As the world has grown more digital, so too has its reliance on APIs. The need for connected software has exploded, and APIs are ubiquitous.

This new reality brings endless possibilities, but it also brings challenges. Increased reliance on APIs means that they should run perfectly, every time. There are three key things all companies should start doing now to manage third-party APIs:

1. Comprehensive logging of third-party API activity (how many calls are being made and how long they are taking, how many errors are being returned, etc.)

2. Monitoring and alerting (so you can identify issues before they affect users)

3. Implementing reliability features like automatic retries (API calls fail for many reasons and can often be immediately retried successfully)

Companies that can quickly adapt to this reality, create systems for monitoring the performance of the APIs they consume, and track the massive flow of information between them may be the ones that define the next decade in API history.

i know how fucking api's work

some ppl i swear to god

This debate is starting to miss the point.

API was touted in 2008 as the Web 2.0 and all these companies, reddit included, used it to sell a vision of a new, open collaborative internet.

Instead, they just killed all the competition, consolidated power, and now that they have it they are fucking everyone else over.

The solution, and it's not great, is just fucking leave reddit.

the difference b/t yt and soundcloud is crazy, but soundcloud doesnt have hour-long playlists

https://soundcloud.com/djekki

talking with my partner we have some theories:

  1. i havent watched enough ads, so i got de-throttled
  2. it's an update glitch, i was randomly downthrottled because i was flagged as a user that might not notice (i mostly just listen to music)
  3. i just streamed too much content, perhaps a playlist i had on repeat was just really high in data
  4. for other reasons my activity got flagged as a bot. probably because i listen to songs on repeat all day or w/e.

it's still effecting me, every song is effected basically. im gonna listen to soundcloud tonight i guess.
