if you consider the draft and side selection as part of the game, dota is definitely sports-like, it's just that the asymmetry begins there. It's remarkable to look into, but it is a huge hole that you can accidentally sink all of your attention into. CS even has the same level of asymmetry with C/CT side and the different weaponry you can buy.

I'm not saying it's not strategic or that there's no sports structure, it's just that the mechanics of the games lead to scenarios that don't have any real sports analogue. You just don't get a scenario in football where the QB just starts steamrolling past everyone because he's "fed"

That's the kind of asynchronous play I mean. Having different equipment in CS isn't asynchronous, that's basically what goes down in baseball. You just take turns with who's doing what. Monetary advantages also have similarities in real sports. A team that's doing well in soccer for example can sub strikers for defenders and make it hard for the opponent to catch up.

Counter Strike is the closest thing to a real sport ever conceived in video games. You have two teams, different positions, roles, responsibilities, tactics/strategy. The games start out the same every time. There's an offense and defense. It's just like a real sport.

If you don't see the appeal, then you probably also don't like watching regular sports. Which is fine, but it's deserving of its popularity.

Stuff like Dota or Street fighter are bizarre in context. There's all kinds of nuts asynchronous gameplay going on. It's very unsportslike.

I remember "medium" Sylvia Browne on the Montell Williams show telling a couple that their missing child was dead. A few days later, the police found the child alive and arrested the kidnapper. It wasn't a few days later. It was long enough that both Browne and the Mother had died. She never got to be properly confronted for how wrong she was and the mother died believing her daughter was dead.

This reminded me of an amusing experience from my childhood. In Sunday school (its a church thing), we were reading a bible chapter where King Saul summoned the spirit of the prophet Samuel through a medium to ask for advice.

I asked the counselor how can the medium just summon Samuel to earth when he's chilling in heaven? Doesn't that kinda undermine the idea of heaven? That you can be snatched from paradise by a medium, what does that say about security?

...That's not how that works. Movies made directly for a streaming service are intended to drive people to subscribing to the service. They don't make them thinking "Gee, we're not going to make any money off of this whatsoever."

The push to theatrical means they saw potential in it making an actual decent amount of money against the budget, which, if these projections hold true, is NOT going to happen. What that means is they sunk additional money into making it a theatrical release and marketing it, so now they stand to lose potentially even more money than if it just got put on streaming and literally nobody watched it, if it hits the lower end of those projections.

I mean that's exactly how that works in the case of nobody watching it on streaming.

So you start with $120 million and toss it in the hole. You need this movie to be a contributing factor in getting $120 million worth of subs to be worth it.

120,000,000 Subscriptions (new or prevented cancellation) in order for this movie to be a success.

You think it will fall short, so you spend extra money sending out a theatrical release. Now the equation is more like:

Marketing + Distribution + 120,000,000 + Subscription Lost From People who were not previously subscribed but would just to watch this move but will no longer do so because they saw it in theaters Subscriptions + Box Office

Now that last variable on the left side is probably zero so the only thing here that really matters is did the movie make more money than it cost to put it in theaters and seeing as how there's basically no marketing for this movie at all there's a good chance I feel that putting it in theaters improved the finances.

The original projection was $0 in box office. It was budgeted for and made as a direct to max movie.

It was originally supposed to just be a streaming only movie. Zaslav last minute decided on a theatrical release to "recoup costs" so the only question we really should be asking is how much did the theatrical release cost.
