Topic | One must be deleted in 2023: Pitbulls, lolis, or Proshippers. |
MrMallard 01/01/23 11:30:05 PM #29 | Lolis, hands down. I don't subscribe to the pro/anti-shipper dichotomy. There's weird taboo stuff that will absolutely ruin my day, and I get why people find that distasteful, but I don't think anti-shippers are in the right either because they will absolutely go to extremes to paint their enemies as abusers and bad people to the point of stalking, harassing and doxing them. Like all fandom drama, you're arguably more likely to see a 25 year old antishipper sending death threats to an edgy 14 your old fanfic writer than you are to see an actual criminal or abuser getting outed/arrested by vigilant fandom guardians concerned with groomers in the community. It's a noble ambition that's dragged through the mud by people who literally only want to paint others as hostile enemies and tear them apart. The idea that a story with dark themes and difficult subject matter is tantamount to sexual and psychological abuse is a step too far, and the degree to which anti-shippers will go to label people as "pro-shippers" and "out" them as bad people is insane. I don't believe in the pro/anti-shipper dichotomy, there's more nuance to this than a bunch of pro-censorship Bulldogs making their personal boundaries a universal moral dictum. Violent pitbulls are more a product of their owners, they as a species are just as entitled to life as a golden retriever, a jellyfish or a mosquito. Being anti-pitbull to the point of wanting every last dog to be destroyed is - in my opinion - an intentionally inflammatory viewpoint that could easily lead to other entire species of animals being put down for being dangerous or "inconvenient". It's fucking stupid. I have a personal distaste for lolicon, because unlike the open-ended nature of what "pro-shipping" can be and to which degree anti-shippers can crack down on it, I do view lolicon as sexualised depictions of minors and I do view lolicon fans as indulging in something incredibly disturbing. Like I used to be into hentai and doujinshi and stuff, and even when I was a teenager this shit was weird and off-putting. You have actual child characters, with or without the personality of a child, being fucked by grown men for the viewing pleasure of an audience who wants to see a child having sex. The later justification of the characters actually being 700 year old dragon princesses who look like children doesn't make it any better, especially when the characters still behave like children. It's revolting. Users like to point out that Australia arrests people who view lolicon, and to my knowledge that's incorrect. People who get arrested for lolicon tend to get arrested for importing physical manga, DVDs or sex toys depicting underaged characters or characters with the clear, fully intended visage of a prepubescent child in a sexual light and having sex. At which point, it becomes child abuse material and paraphernalia. Pro-shipping is a nebulous enemy that a vocal and rabid contingent of people can stretch into whatever boogeyman they want to, and they combat this nebulous enemy with harassment, stalking and outright lying to suit their viewpoint and justify their actions. Lolicon is, objectively, sexually charged content or outright pornography tailored to a viewing audience who wants to view children or child-like characters being explicitly sexualised or having sex. I find enough wrong with the former that I refuse to engage with it as a legitimate worldview, because the reality of the content under attack is more nuanced than the fanatical word of self-appointed moral guardians. I find the latter to be the sum of its parts, more or less, and I do regard people who engage with this content as more likely to be creeps because of it. What particularly gets me about lolicon is how people make a big deal about people being prosecuted for it when they either don't realise or outright refuse to acknowledge that people who get arrested tend to get arrested for importing physical paraphernalia. I don't find lolicon to be a subject particularly heavy with nuance, and I do find the practitioners of it to overwhelmingly be extremely weird and defensive about it in a way that makes them look more like potential child abusers than not. The other two subjects have more to them than "endorse/condemn them fully". Lolicon is the one subject where I think that viewpoint is mostly justified out of these three. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |
Topic | Canada is banning non residents from buying homes. |
MrMallard 01/01/23 10:31:50 PM #22 | meestermj posted... A new Canadian law took effect January 1 that essentially bans foreign buyers from buying residential properties as investments for two yearsAbsolutely on board with this. Australia has a property development crisis, where these slimeballs are buying up massive swaths of land, knocking down houses and putting up shoebox apartments with substandard materials. Last decade, a bunch of these apartment complexes had cracked foundations and had to be evacuated. With the global shift towards the right-wing in 2016 and the ensuing cuts to industry regulations, coupled with the rise of organised crime and cronyism seeping into parliament, it has left the property market in this awful state where rich leeches drive up prices and make millions more dollars every year. And that's just Australia. With that being said? The issue isn't wholly foreign investors. Plenty of true blue Aussie investors are doing the same thing, to the point of trying to infiltrate local politics to sign off on controversial building leases that will enrich them and leave communities worse off. There have been property developers who've argued successfully in court to have the term "property developer" dismissed in legal cases, because the term "property developer" has negative connotations that is tantamount to defamation. If Canada is anything like over here - and for all I know, it might not be so bad - the property market is a rort whether your buyer is from Saskatchewan, Bulgaria or China. Though with that being said, this helps to stem the flow of crooks turning housing into a commodity rather than a human right. And while I've emphasised that this is an issue locally, it can be argued that foreign investment companies are a huge part of the problem. Cutting back to Australia again, we have a big issue with Chinese investors buying up all our shit. Even a temporary ban like this is great - be vigilant for loopholes and for your various home-grown crooks to seize the opportunity to fuck you in the ass, but I feel like this is a great idea if nothing else. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |

MrMallard 12/30/22 5:27:00 AM #1 | I've tried to sell people on For The King in the past and it's never really worked, but I feel the need to try again after hearing this news. For The King is one of the most engaging turn-based RPGs I've ever played. Me and a former friend of mine used to pull like six hour gaming sessions playing it without even realising it, we'd play and play until one of us checked the time or until we both got fatigued. It was an insane experience, only matched by couch co-op Diablo 3 earlier. You create up to three characters with their own class. The Blacksmith is good with heavy weapons and brute strength, the Bard is good with technical skills, the Herbalist can diffuse healing items to the entire party - and there's a joke class called the Hobo that sucks at every stat and starts each campaign with a pointy stick that can break if you miss every attack roll. Visually and mechanically, it's reminiscent of tabletop gaming. If your attack stat is 80, you have 80% of a chance to roll successfully. More difficult weapons require more rolls per attack than an easier weapon, but do incredible damage if they hit. You can also buff your rolls with a Focus resource that you replenish at campsites and inns. The campaigns are very barebones, which is a massive strength because it lets you and your party have your own adventure. The fun of the game is going around - preferably with a friend in couch co-op - and doing stuff like games of chance, side dungeons and random events to get better loot. If you wipe, your heroes are permanently dead and you have to start again - but you also unlock Lore points which let you buy more character classes, events, weapons, armour and customisation options. It's the ultimate fuck-around game, and when you win a campaign it feels so good. I'm not doing a great job of explaining it, but it is stupid amounts of fun and it's one of my most fondly remembered video games of the past five years. Imagine playing Final Fantasy with a friend, and you take turns attacking with your different characters - that's For The King. The friend I played this with ended up being a back-stabbing fuckface, but this game is just as great as the day I stumbled upon it on Game Pass. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |

Some have that gradual slide into illness and death that doesn't end until they stop breathing, but it's common enough that in the last day or two of a pet's life, they perk up a little and you have a couple of good days with them until you wake up and they've died during the night. Look at tsup going above and beyond to co-opt body positivity messaging regarding "small dick energy" to paint Greta Thunberg as an aggressor who deserved Tate's trolling, coupled with his later messages in support of Tate. Look at how far that Phoenix guy or whatever went to go "not only is it pathetic that people think this is gonna stick, it's downright horrible that anyone would be rooting for this arrest over inflated claims" through wall of text after wall of text. I know that's rich coming from me considering how long my posts get, but I think you can tell the difference between genuine passion for a subject and empty, grasping platitudes to continue your dick-riding gimmick. The longer you treat these users with the legitimacy they need to continue their trolling efforts, the longer you'll have to put up with them. All of the Andrew Tate shit has been around for months, and at this point they're either legitimate defenders or they're annoying opportunists taking advantage of controversy to fuck with people. Topic | Years later: What exactly happened between Kojima and Konami? |
MrMallard 12/29/22 7:11:11 AM #5 | So we now have to ask - on an 80 million dollar budget, how much did Metal Gear Solid 5 make Konami? In seven days, it made over $500 million. It sold over 3 million copies. As per this article (https://www.gamesindustry.biz/mgs-v-sells-6m-pushes- konami-digital-profits-up-by-150-percent), it sold 6 million copies in as many months and raised Konami's profits by 150%, all by itself. Keep in mind, that's including the bad press it got over the missing content. Metal Gear Solid was one of the most expensive video games ever, but it was also one of the most successful modern video games and it absolutely made its budget back several times over. I understand that Konami needed to be pragmatic, but I can't help but see what they did to Kojima and his studio as petty and cruel. I think what they did to Kojima and the team as incredibly dehumanising, and it speaks to a history of IP mismanagement and blatant profiteering on their end - see their full-on shift into pachislot right after MGS5 launched, many relying on abandoned game IPs that people wanted to play in the form of actual video games. And that's not even to paint them with the worst possible brush, because Activision-Blizzard has a reputation for dismantling teams and sending them to work in the bowels of the corporation to make assets for Call of Duty. Ubisoft had a culture of harassment for years. We've seen in the past few years alone that western companies, even orders of magnitude more profitable than Konami, are just as awful to their staff and anathemic to projects that people want to see in the name of pure, bald-faces profit. Konami was the boogeyman of 2015 and beyond, but they were just one relatively large fish in an ocean of sharks. East or west, EA or Sega, this degree of corporatization and dehumanization exists in the games industry. This is merely the most high-profile case of studio mistreatment of its day, which may have paved the way for games journalists like Jason Schreier to keep a closer eye on the industry. Also, a bulk of that budget went into building the FOX Engine. Konami could have used it to recoup some of the costs and make even more money with projects like Silent Hills. When they shitcanned Kojima, they let all that money go to waste because the ONLY games they made with the engine were a couple Pro Evolution Soccer games. And then they scrapped it in favor of an underbaked use of the Unreal Engine and a glut of microtransactions for eFootball 2022, which is one of the worst reviewed video games of all time. So my answer basically boils down to this: I understand why Kojima wasn't able to run rampant past a certain point, but at the point that he was shut down, production was already winding up and it would have been out by the end of 2016. We know that the game would have made its money back, because when it released in its incomplete form, it did make its money back. It might have stood the test of time even better, and remained profitable, if the game was actually finished. I also find the way KojiPro as a whole were treated to be incredibly shocking and distasteful, and considering how well the team's efforts paid off in the end, I find the dehumanising nature of their treatment to be unconscionable. I can understand to a point why Konami cracked down so hard on the game, but I can't stand by what they did to the staff. I've tried to keep my bias out of the grittier details, but that's my take. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |
Topic | Years later: What exactly happened between Kojima and Konami? |
MrMallard 12/29/22 7:10:34 AM #4 | So initially Kojima doesn't want to make MGS4. He didn't want to make MGS2, and he found a new niche to cover for MGS3, but 4 was the point that he's fully off the ship. He helms it after receiving death threats and after his staff ask him in earnest to lead them, and the production is troubled to say the least. Kojima's initial ending had Snake and Otacon surrendering to the authorities and being executed, which drew outcry from the team, and eventually he decides on the ending we got - One reason he decides to go down that route is because Kojima himself Kojima developed Peace Walker partially because he noticed his son was really into Monster Hunter, so he was able to explore that sort of avenue in the world of MGS. It featured a return to Big Boss after the end of MGS3, and the plot involved the spectre of nuclear war in the midst of the Cold War and the innovation and proliferation of AI war machines. As goofy as it was at points - the Japanese version had a ton of product placement from Doritos and Mountain Dew, and the electricity rods in the English version were tickle rods in the Japanese one - I thought it was pretty poignant. So that brings us to the starting stage of MGS5. Solid's story is over, and it was the last MGS game Kojima wanted to make. Peace Walker was a way to innovate on the series and possibly to connect to his son, and without the baggage of MGS's cyberpunk + the appeal of retrofuturism and being able to shape a divergent technological evolution in a world that looks like ours and has many of the same events, I personally think Kojima was back on board. Metal Gear was interesting to Kojima again. He could push boundaries again. So when he began making MGS5 as the final Metal Gear Game - set in the final decade between the earliest Solid entries and the earliest 2D entries - he went at it with everything he had. We're talking a new game engine with state of the art functionality and graphics. We're talking about Kojima leveraging his position on the Konami board of directors to get his passion project made. This was going to be the pinnacle of his career. Where things went wrong were time and budget. That sounds bad - and it is. But for what it's worth, there was precedent. Metal Gear Solid games were often delayed multiple times and over-budget as the team expanded the scope, polished everything they could and implemented the quirky little touches that tend to be beloved. This would always pay off in the end, with I think every metal gear solid game - perhaps not as successfully with 4 - returning a decent profit. But the scale of 5 was different, because the budget of this game surpassed $80 million. The reason for this is the FOX Engine which had to be built from scratch, on top of the lengthy development time which went over-budget like many of the previous games in the series. Another reason is because Kojima's antics had soured him on other Konami board members. One of them in particular is said to have had it out for him, and MGS5's significant deficit - spending tens of millions of dollars a year with zero returns - was a great reason to challenge him despite Kojima himself being on the board of directors. So Konami steps in past a certain point, and they tell KojiPro that they need a release NOW. They're putting out a prologue to MGSV to recoup some of their massive costs. Take what you have and make a standalone release. This ended up being a factor in the game's controversial reputation. Ground Zeroes is incredibly fucking dark, even moreso than the eventual release of the Phantom Pain which would neuter Skull Face to a shadow of the malice he exhibited in GZ. Somewhere in development, the game's darkness was tempered somewhat and things were changed: initially (MGS5 spoilers), Another point of contention is the size of the game vs the price point. You were looking at between $20 and $30 for what was essentially a tech demo, there were roughly six missions and the game wasn't exactly the most polished at the time. What was there was incredible, but the amount of content for the price was a point of criticism. The prologue, while met with confusion and a degree of derision for the dearth of content, sells pretty well. At least enough for Konami to back off for the time being, probably about a year. About six months before the game launches, the shit finally hits the fan. Kojima is ousted from the board of directors. He and Kojima Productions are essentially fired and made "contractors" to finish the game by a set release date - September 1. KojiPro is effectively disbanded as a studio and given an internal name consisting of a few numbers. The team loses their internet privileges, and their ID cards are restricted to their workstations only. It's around this time that gaming news outlets begin to cover the unfolding shitshow. Super Bunnyhop, a guy I followed religiously at the time, made a video exposing a bunch of this via confidential sources in the game industry - he then got his video taken down for using 5 seconds of a promotional trailer Konami had publically uploaded, and the internet promptly exploded against Konami on both the expos that Super Bunnyhop released and for what was seen as a blatant attemot to silence criticism and dissent. During this time, gaming youtubers were not only highlighting Konami's pachislots, but their poor workplace conditions. If an employee was seen unfavorably, they could be taken out of their game studio and given a job at one of Konami's health clubs. You weren't beholden to your section if the company, you could be booted into an entire different industry that Konami had a stake in. The narrative became that Konami mistreated their staff severely, and this Kojima situation was them retaliating against a huge industry name for petty reasons - which I somewhat agree with, budget and time issues nonwithstanding. At the end of the day, you could call this a conflict between Kojima's idealism - using up a truly grotesque amount of money to pursue a huge, sprawling passion project that he intended to use to change gaming forever - vs Konami's pragmatism - they're $80 million in the hole, Kojima is bleeding the coffers dry, make an example of him and force him to bring this hellish production cycle to an end. Both of them have their drawbacks, Kojima's frivolous spending and Konami essentially sabotaging the game by stapling it shut at the end instead of finishing it. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |
Topic | One of these upcoming games you give NO FUCKS about. Which is it? |
MrMallard 12/29/22 3:40:51 AM #47 | The only one I'm interested in is SF6. I remember IV being a very static, technical fighter without the bells and whistles I liked from your Namco fighters like SC and Tekken, so I never really breached into the series. But SF6 looks kind of amazing with the free-roam mode and the character customisation, and I think there's a beat em up mode too. It looks big and fleshed out and full of shit to do. It's probably the most appealing fighting game I've seen since SCVI. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |
Topic | You guys should donate blood |
MrMallard 12/29/22 3:36:18 AM #70 | Unfortunately, gay/bisexual men are often not eligible to donate blood due to blanket fears of HIV within the queer community. This is despite the fact that in corners of the world like the UK, the percentage of new HIV infections among the straight population is beginning to overtake the new HIV infections of the queer community. Of course you want a healthy blood sample, which is why it's great that there are tests to test for diseases like HIV, hepatitis and other bloodborne illnesses. But legislation remains from the era of the AIDS epidemic that bar queer people - mostly gay and bisexual men - from donating blood, or at least gives blood donation centres the power to turn queer blood doners away. So long story short, as a bi guy, I probably wouldn't be able to donate blood even if I wanted to. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |

MrMallard 12/28/22 10:37:17 PM #101 | Look, spoilers off, I saw the topic on The Site Which Shall Not Be Named over the holidays - and while I don't condone his behaviour due to how worrying it is and how he began openly antagonizing people, the fact that he went further and further into it is what led me to believe he began leaning into it while he was drunk. He might not care about his health, but I care enough about him as a user that I hope he's okay. He might not care about what happens to himself, but I care enough about him and what happens to him to at least comment in it and hope for the best. I'm not justifying what he did to get suspended, it makes sense. But I still care about the guy, and I hope he comes back soon - preferably with a cleanish bill of health. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |

MrMallard 12/28/22 10:20:37 PM #97 | I did just make a pathetic and self-indulgent post tbh. I made it for petty reasons too. But I would like to reiterate - I like a-c-a-b, and I hope he doesn't self-destruct into an early grave. The reason I gave was the long anecdote I wrote beforehand. I also expressed concern about his health, while feeling uneasy about the prospect of pushing him away. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |

MrMallard 12/28/22 10:11:18 PM #92 | I remember ages ago when acab posted a topic about his "John Wayne is a Nazi" t-shirt starting to fall apart, and dp came into the topic moralising about calling political opponents "nazis" and questioning whether John Wayne's political affiliations were anywhere approaching the policies or aims of the Nazi party. Even when it was pointed out that "John Wayne is a Nazi" is a punk song, which fits acab's musical tastes and suits the other dozens of punk songs he was posted in that topic, he took ages to get the hint and made a disgraceful dismount where he tried to put himself in the right for starting the argument in the first place. Seeing him do his usual troll shit and admonish acab for his lifestyle is already annoying enough, but it's pathetic when you remember stuff like that. It was legit the first time I became aware of dp because of how clueless and out of place he was being, and that perception has never really left me since - imo, there's zero high ground to claim due to the embarrassing nature of his association with acab. Either way, I've never had an issue with acab and he's always come across as a personable dude. It's really messed up to hear about his health issues, and I do hope he considers going to the doctor or changing his habits for a little while. I don't want to like push my values on him and make him uncomfortable, but I want him around for as long as possible and brown vomit/shit is a bad sign. Like don't feel pushed away, but there's gotta be something that can be done to be a bit more healthy. I will say that posting pictures of the puke was a dumb move, but I feel like at that point he was probably leaning into it. That's what I do when I get drunk, and it gets me in trouble just about every time. --- Rest your head - you've got two pillows to choose from in a queen-sized bed Now Playing: Paladins, Minecraft, Danganronpa |
