This is kind of crazy. We saw it in other crowd crushes the past year. When lockdowns and masks ended, people just acting like idiots.

I can see why this kinda thing is privy to America but perhaps it's just a human thing. I would've thought a more...organized? country like Korea would have either culturally or systemically better organized things.

1. It was the first time the mask mandate was completely lifted since late 2019/early 2020
2. It was Halloween weekend.
3. It was Itaewon which is a very popular bar/club spot
4. It was in a very narrow and uphill street/alleyway
5. There were not many police officers stationed in the area compared to the number of people partying
6. Of those officers, not all of them were doing crowd control. They were split up for drug busts, violence, etc...
7. There were peaceful political protests (against the current president) happening in another part of the city so some cops were assigned that duty.
8. There were no crowd control areas stationed. No one to direct flow of traffic.
9. A LOT of the people were in their late teens or early 20's. So for them, this was the first time since the pandemic hit that they could go out and party with people. Hence how massive it was.
10. Safety measures in Korea are more suggestions. Bribery for police to look the other way for violations is not uncommon here. Even higher-up political officials will let building manufacturers get away with a lot in exchange for kickbacks.
11. Whenever massive tragedies like this happen, Korea will have a period of mourning, scapegoats will be lightly sentenced, and nothing will be done to remedy the issues. Most likely, all festivals will be canceled for a few months (like Halloween celebrations have been), and then things will resume as usual.

110% agree. There's a reason a show like British Bake Off is incredibly successful because not everything needs to be over dramatic with the music and everything. It's like you watch one American reality television show, you've seen them all.
