I think Metallica is the better answer. They got popular for being more speed/thrash metal and everyone loved them for it, and then they go and make The Black album which really changed their style and upset half the fan base.

Ah, that's a bummer. I think the setting has a ton of potential as an action RPG. Just go around collecting new armor and swords. Kill some mythological creatures, burn down a village, etc.
