They usually do that unless youre literally the best employee theyve ever seen.

That way there is a baseline comparison between you and someone whos been there awhile, knows how to do everything and is very good.

Dont worry unless the next one is also 3 or less.

I've worked for companies that had a rule where they wouldn't give out a perfect score, because that would mean there was no room for improvement. I had a new manager once that didn't know this rule and gave a perfect score to me and another person, then had to retract that score after learning about the rule lol

Tbh these performance evaluations don't mean shit unless they're associated with a raise.

yep no raise no promotion this time. I am thinking this summer will be more likely to be a time to get one/both of those (informal reviews then).

My company has a whole calibration process for different managers'/teams' scoring because it is all over the place. Oh well.

Sounds like your average. Maybe you're good. Maybe your boss don't want to give you what you're worth so they won't give you a raise so they can get a bonus. Maybe you are just average. What do you so that make you stick out from the others?

Just had the meeting. She stated that I'm one of the few members on the team who knows how to do dashboards, which are among the most complex types of projects we work on. She said learning that at 6 months in is much, much faster than typical (and many people on the team who have been there longer don't know how to do them at all, and she'd say people who do learn them wouldn't learn them for maybe then another 6 months into their tenure). So, for that category, I'd say that I'm exceeding expectations (4), and maybe even far exceeding expectations (5) given that I've done them in half the time of the few employees who have been doing them. I think I gave myself like a 4 or 4.5 on that. She gave me a 3.5 in the relevant category.

The way I see it, there was a lot of "you do this much better/faster than people when they've been here a similar amount of it", but then I'd be getting 3s or 3.5s. I feel like she was providing a steady scale across all employees, even when expectations are not constant across employees.

My issue, I think, is with a scale based on "expectations". Inherently, this type of scale has a need to be fair across employees for all reasons, but on the other hand, it's not really reasonable to say that we are going to normalize "expectations" to be some constant bar, when your expectations should (in my opinion) be weighed somewhat based on how long people have been their, their experience in the field, their academic experience, past work, etc.

I think the primary issue is that the scale itself is problematic, we had different ways of interpreting/using the scales.

The content of what strengths/weaknesses I have, and the specific areas to work on were highly correlated between her review and my self-evaluation, and I have worked a lot in the past couple of months (this is a very long, drawn out process, so these things are actually kind of out-of-date) in those particular areas, so I think I'm a stronger researcher for it.

3.00 is "meeting expectations", so 3.43 is supposedly above what is expected of me.

But 3.43/5.00 "feels" bad tbh. Also, its significantly lower than what I rated myself (although our open-ended feedback pointed at almost identical sets of strengths/weaknesses, which is a good sign, I think). But, I also feel like that's my own bias in how I would score things (I feel like 4/5 is what I'd call good, and 3/5 would be average).
