How and why do the rich do things like this?

The consequences to not paying your debts are very bad. Your credit will get destroyed, youll get sent to collections, you wont be able to secure any decent credit cards, you wont be able get decent rates on home loans, some jobs wont hire you due to your bad credit, and more

why would the rich even think about ruining their life like that if they have the means to pay it?

As far as I know, almost everyone in an upper class or rich neighborhood worked hard and earned everything they have.

They made all the right moves, never got in trouble with the law, and put in all the work to have that big house in Beverly Hills or Atherton (for example)
