Hell yes.

To say I loved Terrifier 2 would be an egregious understatement. Normally I don't enjoy slasher films (unless you consider Alien or The Thing to be slashers), and slasher sequels have a nasty reputation for being cheap, lazy cash-ins.

Terrifier 2, however, was the real deal. When I watched it on opening night, I was gripped for the entirety of its 2-hour-16-minute runtime, which shouldn't be possible considering that the genre usually can't sustain my interest for 90 minutes. But as you mentioned, the mixing of genres worked incredibly well here. From the opening scene with Art's hallucination, I knew this thing was about to get weird, and it did so in the best possible way.

The movie does an amazing job of letting the viewer engage with their Id (Art is such a charismatic and funny monster) while also giving us a sister-brother pair that are legit worth rooting for. Sienna's dedication to her costume and her sadness over losing her father won me over. When she fought Art, it was the turning point where I finally didn't want him to have his twisted fun.

Surprisingly, I didn't have a problem with the fantasy/superhero elements. This movie (and Terrifer 1) established that Art was essentially a supervillain immune to death, and because of that, I was able to buy into the idea that someone like Sienna could survive death with the help of an enchanted sword. There's a clear supernatural element throughout the story, and it connects back to Sienna's father in a way that I imagine will be explored in Terrifier 3. While some might see Sienna as a "chosen one," I see her as someone who earns the opportunity to be chosen through persistence, mental/physical toughness, and family love.

Overall, an amazing movie. Easily the best slasher sequel I've ever seen, and probably my favorite slasher, period. David Howard Thornton is simply too good.

Mr. Pink is the best character in the movie, because hes energetic, but hes also trying to be rational throughout the course of the film. Everyone else plays emotionally (or psychotically), and it leads to their downfall. You only guy who plays it smart is also the only one who manages to escape with his blood still securely inside his body.

Good catch. I overlooked the "rational vs. emotional" theme at play. It's almost like a horror film where the people who commit a sin die while the people who display the right virtue survive.

I liked Javi and the subplot with his brother, but everything else was was brutally forgettable, especially the rest of the cast.

This one also strayed too far from Clem's storyline for its own good.

I think trading the genre's usual anti-hero for an anti-villain really works here.
plasma
we get a character who might best be described as an anti-villain.

Greats minds.

ssbm
It's really interesting, watching the intro scene again where Carlito monologues in court. You would think Carlito is just BSing, but no, he's completely honest. And Dave, who looks more reasonable, just ends up being completely unreasonable by the end.

That why this movie won me over so strongly. He's initially characterized as a wild man, then you see this humble guy who sticks by his word. Integrity shines brightly in a project like this.

Tangy
I think I also love the pacing here too. It does all these soft builds, where you see the tension rising, but Carlito always worms his way out of danger. By the time we reach the finale however, its non stop.

You nailed it with the "soft builds" part. I couldn't quite figure out why I loved the pacing so much, but this is it. There's tension, then release, and not until the end does the movie truly pop.

Oh phew. Yeah, it may not have been my least favorite movie, but Scarface was the most disappointing movie on this list for me, given how prominent it is in pop culture.

I loved that even though we were at opposite ends of the rankings for this one, we both hated that car bomb scene.

Also...

Inviso

We then get a montage of Tonys rise. He buys his sister a hair salon, he gets married, and he buys a big mansion. Everything is great, but this is just a montage. It goes for five minutes, tops, and its the only time in the entire film that Tony isnt stoic or scowling or angry, so of course we cant highlight that for any period of time to give us a point where Tony has his rise and happiness, before that ultimate fall comes around. Nope, as soon as the montage hits, we get Tony being unsatisfied with how his wealth and power isnt getting him everything that he wants.

I saw the "Push It To The Limit" montage as a commentary on greed and how it makes happiness short-lived. I get why you're unsatisfied with the brevity of it, but this period of Tony's life needs to be short; it's like a one-week vacation before you return to the office for the rest of the year.

Jags fan here.

I'm done with Doug Pederson. There's a fine line between being aggressive and being reckless. He has both feet in reckless territory. If you're up 4 late in the game with a reliable kicker, you kick the FG and go up 7. It's that simple. You don't need a TD on every drive. This isn't the '99 Rams, it's the Giants.

Base game House in Fata Morgana, essential prequel A Requiem for Innocence, a present day Reincarnation sequel [currently werking my way through this one!], and some short stories. You can get HiFM and Requiem on Steam if you prefer to play on PC, it's on sale now. If you're just wanting to play the main story in its entirety, or if you're not sure if you'll like Fata Morgana in the first place, this is the most cost-effective option.

I believe the Reincarnation sequel is a console-exclusive.

16. Gangs of New York (2002)

Vis
Coming so late in the list (which is surprising, given that its still twenty years old at this point), Gangs of New York really stands out on this list as a time period untouched up to this point, yet Academy Award winner Martin Scorcese (who I BELIEVE appears five times on this list in total) manages to go outside his wheelhouse to tell a historical narrative thats compelling from start to finish. Look at the level of talent in this film, too: helmed by a pair of academy award winners (well, future winners, in Leos case), plus a bunch of nominees, all performing what is essentially a Shakespearean tragedy for almost everyone involved. Its amazing. I love the fact that the films central conflict doesnt even matter. Theres all this talk about the titular gangs of New York, jockeying for position and pride and honor and all that, and the climax comes down to the city getting pissed the fuck off about being conscripted to fight in a Civil War they have no stake in.

I love the character work in this film though, across the board. Johnny is perfect as an upjumped thug who tries to push far beyond his means, and then gets pissy when his buddy is just naturally better than him. Johnnys feebles attempts to achieve even HALF of what Amsterdam effortlessly accomplishes lead to his betrayal, and for what? He winds up a sacrifice in the cold war between Amsterdam and Bill, killed in a way by both men. Jack and McGloin are amazingly portrayed as well, serving as Bills pet prizes for winning his war against Priest Vallon, and they just come across as perfectly pathetic throughout the film. Meanwhile, Monk stands tall, refusing to be anyones bitch, and even in death, he leaves the film with his pride intact. And Jenny is fierce, yet tender at the same time, struggling with her loyalties.

Of course, everything comes down to the two leads. Amsterdam does the standard organized crime plot of being the young upstart, brought into the organization and quickly catching the eye of the boss. You have the added wrinkle of him essentially being a spy for himself, but I enjoy the conflict of seeing him grow to respect and appreciate Bill, to the point where he saves his life and has to question the festering animosity in his heart.

But Bill is the pice de resistance of the film. Hes a man who believes in honor and going to war and earning your stripes by being willing to die for your country, and he even shows enough respect to his fallen foe (Priest Vallon) to treat his memory as sacred. But at the same time, we see Bill fighting in a cowardly fashion throughout the film: sneak attacking the priest, attacking Monk from behind, guerrilla attacking Amsterdam during their final battle. You can tell he has a cowardly streak, but he WANTS to be the big, brave boss. He constantly reminds us that his FATHER fought and died for Americabut thats not HIM fighting. Its just really interesting to see that dichotomy of his character, and that MAKES the film for me, more than anything else.

I didn't like GoNY very much, but Vis' write-up gave me a much better appreciation for it.

I still can't believe Gangs of New York placed higher than The Irishman. Outside of DDL, that movie is just alright.

Yeah, I thought GoNY would easily be the first Scorsese film to drop.

Sometimes I do little pencil sketches based on black-and-white movies, here's the one I did for Scarface - https://imgur.com/a/QeRxU0S (Boris Karloff @ 49:47)

Amazing. Gives me the vibe of a crime noir graphic novel. You should team up with Ed Brubaker.

Played this for 2 hours back in 2003, but I have no memory of the story. Can't rate it fairly.

Think about all the money you sad degenerates wagered on Scarface '32, only to jump ship at the last moment. But, hey, at least somebody got paid. Pokewars, the world is yours.
