If your starter is not Bulbasaur or Squirtle, Onix can be difficult, especially if you're underlevelled. A lot of those "Can you beat Pokemon with only a ______?" YouTube videos have to grind quite a bit to get past Onix.

At least in the originals. Char got metal claw in gen 3.

Defense in pokemon sucks. What's the point of having high defense if your special defense is shitty? You'll still get killed. There should only be one defense stat imo.

The point is that cockblocking physical attackers typically forces a switch, giving you a valuable turn to set up. This is how Steelix has survived in RU/UU.
