The bad guy managed to conquer the whole continent and put his kids in charge of the former kingdoms, then took the continent's combined armies and sailed across the sea to conquer new nations. Main characters take advantage of his absence to start a rebellion and they try to recapture all their lost kingdoms before the army returns. At some point the scouts report that they see the usurper's sails on the horizon, so shit is going down. And they're freaking out because he's back so much sooner than they thought, so his army must still be in good shape.
