I haven't found love yet, but I feel like keeping love would be harder. I've heard so much about how love is a commitment, and it does seem applicable to people who've been married for 25+ years. That's longer than a lot of fucking people have been alive, and it requires effort. Commitment is effort, re-establishing the same values that made your partner fall in love with you.

Now granted, finding love is a fucking bitch of a thing. There's a reason why people suggest settling. But you've gotta think about the long haul, staying invested in the same person for a majority of your lifetime.

The last full album I heard was Bleed Out by the Mountain Goats.

Cliffnotes about this whole thing: been a longtime fan, prefer the earlier stuff, the last two albums have been kind of meh. I attribute this to a difference in production, where the lead singer has been urged to rein in their control by a producer.

Bleed Out is the best Mountain Goats album in five years.

There was a serious throwback album in 2020 that I really like, but my favorite recent release was a concept album about goth rock from 2017. This album continues the concept album route, but about like RedLetterMedia-tier VHS action movies. And it manages to balance the fast-based, raw feel of a production like that with the incredible indie ballads that I love this band so much for.

Contrast a song like Wage Wars Get Rich Die Handsome with Bleed Out. The first third of the album is full of bangers. The second third is kinda weak. The third half is full of Mountain Goats-isms that I am fully into.

I can't really overemphasize how much I prefer this album over the past five years of Mountain Goats music. It's not perfect, but no Mountain Goats album is perfect. It's just very good.

I'm sorry your relationship has come to this. It's never easy confronting the negative aspects of someone you care so much about, let alone a romantic partner. I feel like denial has a lot to do with it - you want to make something work because it's such a core part of your life, but there's only so long you can ignore the bad stuff or try to live with it before it's all that the relationship is to you.

It's not unfair or wrong to feel that way, either. As you said, you feel like you were going along with the session when it was all about your negative qualities, but when you tried to assert your needs in this space which is meant to help both of you, she fell right off. You're trying to work with her and it feels like she isn't as receptive to your needs. That's valid.

Do you have a good support structure in your life should the worst come to pass? If not, you might want to touch base with some people who can be there for you in case of a worst case scenario. Even if this can be smoothed out, start making a survival plan just in case.

I wouldn't say that at all. The Australian standard is either some shoebox they built in the seventies for cheap, or some glossy shoebox they built for cheap in the 2000's/2010's. I just live in a townhouse above a kebab shop - it's rural out here, too, so rent is way less than you'd get in Sydney or Canberra.

You might as well say that a small loft in Minnesota is the American standard.

Anyway yeah, I had a bender this past weekend and made that inflammatory joke on Discord, then basically went "hold up I'm gonna go get warned on gamefaqs". I don't do it often, but when I do say something bad enough for a warn, I at least like for it to be on my own terms, pushing a boundary in a way I think is funny. I don't do it often and I don't plan to do it again at any point in the near future.

Obviously the topic I was goofing about is a serious one, and I do genuinely feel bad about kids being murdered in places of learning. I'm particularly offended that the solution is to install armed security in school, who often don't face significant background checks and aren't trained adequately - leading to cases in which teenagers were targeted for predation, including one case where I think a teenage girl became pregnant after being raped by a security guard.

To then double down on that and argue that teachers should be trained in the use of firearms, as if a teacher should now be responsible for blowing away one of the students they may have taught, is almost perverse. And yet the utter fucking failure of the Uvalde police force makes me think that someone other than those clowns HAS to be responsible now. It's really upsetting to be faced with that sort of reality. To avoid the topic of gun control and double down every single time on "more good guys with guns will stop the bad guys with guns" is intellectually and morally abhorrent. It makes me sick.

I like jokes that turn serious topics like that on its head. It's not right, perhaps, but to have just a moment where something so fucking dour and depressing goes so far in the other direction that it makes you laugh? I think that can be healing. Obviously you don't want to desensitise people to the horror of it, I don't refute the seriousness of the topic or insist that it's "not that bad", but an unexpected joke can be a brief escape. I'll gladly eat a warning or a suspension if I think the cause is either just or funny enough.

But again, I don't shy away from the punishment. The warning was justified, as Teep relayed - fantastic fella by the way. I'm glad folks seem to have enjoyed themselves, but it doesn't pre-empt the actual, genuine discussion of the events involved.

You might just not be a fan and that's totally fine, but I used to not really like country music either. I still really dislike bro country and like rap country, i.e. Florida Georgia Line - and while Chicken Fried is an okay song, the fucking out of nowhere nationalistic turn right at the end doesn't sit right with me - but I've connected with more folk-influenced music like The Mountain Goats and a bunch of the twangier picks I recommended above.

I don't like songs about wiping your ass with a corncob and growing taters because you're a Real Country Boy. That shit sucks ass. Country music that exists to validate being a stupid hick is dogshit that's going after the lowest hanging fruit. But I think it's a mistake to think that all country music is like that, or that all southern people who champion country music fits into that mold.

Country and folk music is best when it's telling an emotional story or capturing an emotion. That's Dar Williams in a nutshell, her song February is a masterclass in narrative structure in music - that song is like a Russian nesting doll of sadness, I legitimately wrote an essay about it for fun.

I've ranted and rambled about country and folk music for a while, and I'm sure you weren't asking someone to change your mind. Feel free to dismiss this, you've made your decision and I respect that you feel differently. But I wanted to speak as someone who's slowly come around on country and folk music to say that even if you hate it today, there is so much good music out there that you might one day find something that clicks with you and gives you a taste of something you legitimately enjoy. It's not all Hank Williams and Chad Morgan and Slim Dusty, these repetitive twangers about farming and being from the bush or what have you that drone on and on. There are masterpieces that you may one day come to love. I've been there, and I just want to ask you to keep your mind open to the possibility of finding something you enjoy.

As a last recommendation - which, granted, is solely rooted in "folk" rather than "country" - give If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot a go. It's about a real divorce, and I found the elaboration about how it feels to cope with a failing marriage and struggle with understanding what went wrong to be incredibly insightful. It's slightly bitter, but it's a man coming to terms with the end of his marriage and it's an absolute masterpiece. If you don't listen to any of the songs I've recommended, it'd be fantastic if you at least considered this song a listen.

It's your call, though - I respect that you feel differently.

Use a classifieds page or something - there's a lot less of them then there used to be, but there's one or two decent, legit sites with good moderation.

I've heard that there's still a lot of stigma surrounding nb people who don't fit into the mold of "waify androgynous white woman", so I don't think further fractioning off the non-binary community to suit your dating tastes is a good idea at all.

The police's job is to arrest you, not break into your home and shoot you in your bed. The best they could come up with is that "he had a vape pen", not even saying "we feared for our lives due to the presence of an unidentified metallic object" or whatever. They're banking on people making the "they feared for their lives" connection themselves, despite admitting killing an unarmed man in his bed over a vape pen.

So they were getting this guy for domestic assault and felony charges and shit. The police's job is still to arrest you. This man was unarmed and served no threat, and he was shot and killed in bed over a vape pen. And the police aren't even denying that this was a wrongful death.

Yeah, you reap what you sow - in a court of law. The police aren't executioners, they're fucking police. This was wrong, and the guy they killed being a scumbag doesn't change that.

Austin Eruption did a video on it recently, apparently it has an okay survival gameplay loop and a decent endgame. Dude has been putting these "I played X so you don't have to" videos for a few months, he did one for that Platinum Games flop Babylon's Call.

The funny thing is that the game still has something of an active player base. I don't think I would ever play it, I don't like survival games and the whole Metal Gear fiasco still bothers me, but apparently it's not too bad for what it is.

Oh fuck yeah. Konami are teaming up with Valve to bring us the long-awaited Ricochet 2.
