Because they evolved different paths

the largest wild dogs are grey wolves and a larger body size would be a handicap as they are endurance hunters.

you said that you believe big cats evolved to hunt large bovines in an earlier post....so is the diet of the african lion, mostly cape buffalo? The bengal tiger's main diet is guar? But, iirc the main diet of the siberian is mostly wild boar. What have you read on this?

I said it's possible. I'm basing that on the fact that big cats need big animals to survive, and those big prey animals are around in numbers that can support a self-sufficient big cat population. The gaur is an example where their only natural predator is the tiger. The smaller leopard could never hunt them, but their niche is animals like chital deer, which are also about the biggest prey animal where their diets overlap with tigers. Elephants are massive, but there aren't enough of them to support a predator that preys on them. Last time that happened was the ice age and pretty much all those massive mammals are gone now.

The siberian tiger can prey on smaller animals while retaining a large body size. I have several theories on this:

This subspecies is large because of bergman's rule, but they are not larger than bengal tigers possibly because they are limited by prey availability

At least in the winter, their prey lasts a lot longer (they don't putrefy like a carcass would in India for instance)

The lion is an anomaly in the big cat family. They can kill large prey because they hunt in prides. Also they live with huge numbers of other carnivores like hyenas and leopards from whom they can usurp prey.

I really like big cats too. What do you think of the future of big cats in the wild? specifically the bengal , siberian and african lion? Prob the african lion's wild numbers are easily the largest. Do you think they may disappear from the wild in the next 50 yrs or so?

They will not dissapear in so short a time. But their presence outside of protected areas keeps plummeting. Some estimates put their numbers at 30,000 down from 200,000 decades ago.

The Amur tiger will be fine. There is a greater awareness of their plight than pretty much any other animal. Also, 95% of their population is contiguous, which reduces inbreeding.

The Bengal tiger is also on the upswing. Problem is they are in reproductively isolated units. Depending on how serious India is about creating wildlife corridors, we will see which way their fortunes swing.

Have you ever read about extinct big cats? like the cape lion or the sabre tooth tiger? which was the largest big cat ever in history?

The sabre-toothed tiger never existed. It's a term that's in the popular imagination though. Smilodon and sabre toothed cats were real.

The American lion had a massive frame. So did Smilodon populator and Ndongan tiger. However, these cats were never weighed so who knows.

I was talking about averages.

The heaviest weighed big cat that isn't a liger was a male Amur tiger in a zoo that was deliberately overfed for the record. Would you really count an obese tiger as a representative of the species?

They would try to murder it.

Cats have no love for unrelated babies anyway, and infanticide is extremely common.

What about ligers

They are huge but not a naturally occuring cat.

Fun fact: Male lions will pass on a growth promoting gene. Female lions = growth inhibiting gene.

Male lion x Female lion = Normal sized lion

Male tigers will pass on a growth inhibiting gene. Female tigers = growth promoting gene.

Male tiger x Female tiger = Normal sized tiger

In a liger (male lion X female tiger) they inherit two sets of growth promotion, resulting in gigantism
In a tigon (male tiger x female lion) they inherit two sets of growth inhibition = dwarf big cat

The male Amur and Bengal tiger, and Southern African lion will weigh around 400 lbs, with a head body length around 6.5 feet and a three foot tail. If you read anything to the contrary of these numbers, they are exaggerated figures.

They eat humans on occasion. Usually when they are sick, injured old and unable to catch their normal prey.
